  1. Re:Usenet on Users Revolt Over Yahoo Groups Update · · Score: 1

At some point, usenet's purpose changed from "Discussion forums" to "distributing pirated content and porn".

While I can see the latter being useful, it was sad that we had to mostly lose the former when the latter took over.

These days there are a half million forums out there, each one requiring you to create a separate account, with many dozens of forums on each topic, so you can't reach a wide audience easily. Usenet was simultaneously distributed and centralized, and was the best of both worlds. Sadly it fell victim to the success of the web.

  2. Actually I wouldn't be surprised. on Larry Ellison Believes Apple Is Doomed · · Score: 5, Interesting

It feels like Apple has lost direction since Jobs passed. For example, look at iOS 7: It's a mishmash of awkward design language, with inconsistencies and a flat, boring look that likely never would have been approved by Steve. All that lovely texture that iOS had is gone. People are already complaining about it and I'm sure there will be an even bigger uproar once it goes public. They took inspiration from MICROSOFT for crying out loud!

Look at the rumored (but very likely) "low cost iPhone". It's made of cheap plastic, which Apple had been trying to get away from for years with Jobs at the helm. Steve would have likely insisted that they find a way to build the iPhone out of its current materials but less expensively, and I'm sure the engineers would have lived up to the challenge.

He was a perfectionist, and while I didn't agree with all his decisions, his absolute refusal to compromise and insist that everything be exactly right is what led to Apple becoming what it is. I already see things going downhill and it's not going to be pretty moving forward.

I think Valve should work with WINE/Cedega/etc. to built a Windows emulation engine into Steam so that most Windows games will work out of the box on OS X and Linux. Sure, this might discourage native ports, but having a much bigger library available would certainly benefit the platform.

Hell, Valve themselves built an Direct X -> Open GL API layer to get their own games working on OS X and Linux, so they know what they're doing in this regard. And since the games would be sold through Steam, developers would have a consistent emulation environment to target.

At this rate, the Internet is eventually going to become a glorified version of what AOL was in the 90s. Shudder.

I think Starbucks uses slow consumer-grade DSL connections, because that's what it feels like. Upstream capacity is severely limited, and downstream is only slightly less so. I remember attempting a Facetime call and getting less than one frame per second in both directions and constant reconnecting...turned off Wi-Fi and it was smooth as silk.
