But pirates don't generally capture from the video outputs anyway. This would be dumb; it's better to just get the original compressed MPEG2 stream and work from that.

Capturing video from a DVI or component output is akin to copying a CD by using analog RCA cables. Not the best way to do it and very inconvenient.

That's why I always thought it was silly that upscaling DVD players require HDCP. Hello, DVD pirates don't copy from there. they just copy the data directly off the DVD. Stop being morons, MPAA!

I had a Mystique + Voodoo combo in my machine. I remember the first time I played Descent in 3D accelerated mode using the Voodoo at 640x480. I was getting one frame per vsync. I think I shorted out my keyboard with drool and who knows what other substances...

The problem is that some ISPs come down on people running even small private servers hosting a few photos for their friends to see, game servers, and other things that are to be expected from people who have a connection to the Internet.

An Internet connection is a two way street; you should be able to host content as well as receive it. Granted, you shouldn't be expected to run a large bandwidth-intensive commercial website on a residential broadband connection, but I really hate to see ISPs harass their users for running small personal sites from their connections. If it's not illegal or sucking down a lot of bandwidth, let it be.

For instance, I'm a childfree adult, but I sometimes like to watch old cartoons on Toon Disney or Boomerang. However, I'd have to purchase a "family" grouping to receive just those channels. This grouping would contain all kinds of channels I don't watch, just because I have the desire to occasionally get nostalgic about old cartoons.

A-la-carte channels, at a reasonable cost, would be a great thing. I expect the cable companies to try to rip us off anyway, though.
