A person working at a printing press is a manual laborer - and considering that the bottom rollers run at something like 400 RPM, you don't want an around-the-neck tie anywhere near that. Granted, the torque's not that great, but... I once saw the results of someone trying to unwrap a roller while the machine was still running. The machine literally wrapped his arm around the roller twice. Spiral fracture from elbow to wrist. Never seen anything like that before.

My parents had a simple way of preventing me from buying things that they didn't want me to when I was young. They just didn't give me any significant amount of money!

I know that perhaps it seems absurd to some, but what does a adolescent really NEED to buy? Allowances were for covering "operating expenses". It was put in my hand, and I was sent on my way. I learned that if I decided to spend the money on something other than its intended purpose, I'd soon have a shortage, and nothing sucks more than the embarrassment of sitting with your friends at lunchtime and not having anything to eat. Sometimes allowance included money for clothing (optional items like a specific sweater that I liked, whatever), sometimes "recreational materials" (had to save up for quite a while to get a NES, I remember), but since this was under their control, it was pretty easy to see right away what I'd spent the money on.

Leave IT management to those best suited to it - good managers with skills in the field. You want one person assigned to your department? Fine - but let their boss, the one who sees the overall scheme, handle it. Your way would have 22 different guys working all on top of each other, vying for redundant resources.

I once summoned up my inner BOFH, scripted Outlook's Deleted Items folder to empty on exit on Friday. Left a note warning of this right beside the note on the office fridge that said, "The fridge will be emptied on Friday. If you want it, claim it." I thought it was fitting.

And for those people who didn't close Outlook on Friday... I emptied Deleted Items for them.

Someone decided to get just educated enough to "Recover Deleted Items". I waited until the next Friday, and taught them about "Purge".

And that was pretty much the end of that.

And it would definitely take a while to fill 1.3GB with genuine business data. Consider that many mail servers these days have been configured to deny accepting and/or receiving attachments larger than n, usually somewhere under 15MB.

Regarding your "straight-up urban legend" - I (not a friend of my cousin) had the experience once of walking past the receptionist's desk at work one morning just as she was about to transfer some outside caller (claiming to be the phone company) to a dial tone.

Curiously, they gave our receptionist exactly the proper sequence of keys to press in order to pick up another trunk, conference in an operator, and then drop out of the call. Of course, this varies from switch to switch. Being the thorough person she was, she actually wrote it down.

The receptionist got a cookie for asking me if what this person was asking her to do was okay *before* she did it. I advised her to hang up, she told me that she wasn't permitted to hang up on callers, and I revoked her cookie before hanging up the phone myself.
