It's not the USPTO's job to solely determine the vailidity of a patent. That's what our legal system is for.
Yes it is. That's what those idiots are being paid to do, not rubber-stamp everything that's put in front of them. The courts are supposed to be a last resort.
The USPTO is broken 'cause the government is using it for a cash cow, right? What I don't get is, why don't they just automate the whole thing and have done?
I mean, it seems they'll okay pretty much anything as a patent, now-a-days, so why not fire all those patent inspectors that they have to pay wages to, and just put up a website where anybody can patent anything they like, all they need is a credit card. Phat l00tz all around!
After all, it's the courts who should be deciding if patents are valid, not the USPTO, right?:P
I dunno... though I'm Canadian, and currently dating another guy, I still quite cheerfully call things I don't like 'gay'.:)
Mind, I'm a member of that most feared and hated group of people, the bisexuals, who are reviled by both the homo- and heterosexual communities. Probably because we keep trying to steal all the cute girls AND the cute guys.:D
I think what is meant by legislating morality (what I tend to call 'morality laws') are laws that make something illegal "because it's bad", and not "because it does harm to another party."
Prohibition is a morality law. It's stupid.
Homicide laws aren't morality laws, they make sense because homicide actually does harm to another party.
She starts changing her outfits more often as the series progresses, don't worry. She does wear that one-piece an awful lot for the first while, though. I always got the impression that she didn't really think much about her body, or showing it off, being a full-replacement cyborg from a very young age.
I hope they don't screw up the Tachikomas in the dub. Just wait, they're going to give them some stupid-ass modulated robot voices or something.
It's definitely nice to see some of the other characters getting a bit of development, like Togusa and Ishikawa, not to mention Batou.
And where can I get some of that sweet thermoptic camoflage?:)
That, and for the most part the English voice actors just came across sounding wooden, at least to me. No real... feeling in anything they said.
That and the stupid little script changes in the dub. How exactly does the Japanese version 'It must be that time of the month' translate to the English 'It must be a loose wire'?
It always seemed to me that English-speaking voice 'actors', can't. At least those they dig up to dub anime, anyway. With perhaps the sole exception of Disney and their deal with Ghibli...
Gaw, did I just say something nice about Disney? I have to go shower now.
And of course they'd have to edit the hell out of Stand Alone Complex; God forbid the American audience sees something mature and intelligent in animation...
Currently, here in Toronto, while marijuana is still technically illegal, the police aren't enforcing it for amounts under 30 grams or something like that. Last I heard, anyway...
Just because you've found a more efficient way of doing something doesn't necessarily mean the established industries are going to want to change to that method. They already have massive investment in the current infrastructure, and have tweaked things as finely as they can for maximum profit.
Look at the recording industry and the Internet...
I ping your server. I've just sent ICMP packets over your physical lines into your physical property without your express permission. File charges against me.
It's actually caused by 'Raleigh Scattering', where light is scattered by particles that are relatively small in relation to the wavelength of light being scattered. In this case, the gas molecules in the air itself, which preferentially scatter blue light. Thus, the sky appears blue.
The decompression scene was utterly ridiculous. You're not going to blow up like a balloon with your eyes and tongue bulging out, to explode messily after several long moments of dramatic suffering and gargling. You'll get a full-body hickey (hey baby!), sure, and if you try to hold your breath, your lungs will probably rupture, but none of this exploding crap. Once again, 2001: A Space Odyssey was much closer to reality.
He could have just typed "!SME" or something simple like that... :D
Curses! You out-geeked me to the first Ogre reference! *crushes you under massive treads...*

How can they be underfunded when they're the ONLY government department that makes money? That boggles my mind. :)
That's like complaining that laws against kiddie porn mean that Americans are missing out on working in the lucrative kiddie porn industry.
:)
You're right! We need to change those laws! Whatever happened to capitalism??
I'm kidding, I'm kidding, geeeez...
Or just move to Canada and download all you like. :)
Dear pedantic Slashbots: If cable theft is stealing, why is MP3 downloading "infringement?" Face it; it's stealing
;)
Cable theft is theft-of-service. Downloading copyrighted MP3s is copyright infringement. Legal definitions, is how they're different.
...perhaps someone has attacked SCO from the inside....
Their conscience, maybe? Naaahh...
You are??? Geez, the least you could do is share...

That, I think, is what is meant.
Legal rodents? Ferrets are mustelids, not at all closely related to rodents.
... the precursor to someone building a Tachikoma?

Wouldn't they just fall under good samaritan(sp?) laws just like everybody else?
...another Tunguska event, this time over a populated area, before anybody gets off their ass and wakes up to the potential for destruction.
I, for one, can't wait! Well, as long as it isn't my city that gets it...

Why would they want to do that? That would be directly admitting what they're doing, and they would end up taking all of the complaints.
This way, they don't have to worry, because most of the flak will go to LiveJournal, first.
