    ISDN and Satellite are the two technologies of choice for those who are ADSL/Cable/Wifi challenged.

    I use ISDN as I'm a gamer, and the pings are king for me. A few neighbours here have sat, and they get some bitching download speeds. Have a hunt around and see what you can get. Admittedly, often these techs cost more than an ADSL or cable service does (at least in Australia), but for me no neighbours within 150 meters of me, the rural lifestyle and $buttloads of cash saved living out of the city more than cover the additional costs.

    And if there WAS a 0 day virus propogating over the network and my machine was infected, I'd WANT to be off the network...

    Just to close off, if you have an illness, temporary or permanent, that prevents you from driving safely (epilepsy, narcolepsy, etc) then it is illegal to drive in Australia, and if you get caught, its the same as driving without a license - punishments such as larger fines and jail time start to come into play, depending on the severity and your criminal record.

  9. Re:Is this really that hard? on Handling Viruses in an Uncontrolled Network? · · Score: 4, Interesting

    Thats just wrong. Here in Australia, you lose your drivers license for drink driving, and you are not behind the wheel of a car for however long you get pinged (6 months being the minimum). You can plead the case in court, but there are very few exceptions made.

    I fully support this policy - you decide to risk MY life on the roads, you pay the penalty. Can't get to work now that you've committed a crime and are doing the "time"? Well, hopefully you will realise how important having a license is to your life, and you won't ever drink/drive again. And also, be thankful you didn't injure or kill another road user, pedestrian or even yourself...

    To segue this back onto topic, same rules should apply in this situation. You put others at risk or deny them access to the network due to your inability to load a freely available, well publicised and mandatory on the network you are using tool, then you do the "time". Access cut off and you can't work? Well, perhaps next time you will ensure the virus scanner and firewall software is running, you won't have the issue, and those around you are not impacted.

    Have to say thats not right - I'm on ISDN (128kbps), and it plays perfectly fine. Pings in the 60-80 range, lag is rare, and I have a fragging good time, even on the 32 person servers. Dropping the ISDN to 64k is not great, but you can still play on 10-12 player servers with not too many flying barrels with no lag.

    Now, admittedly more bandwidth = a better experience, but its quite playable and enjoyable on 128k.

    Voila, you have a valid SSL connection, nice little lock in your browser window, and I can;

    updates.microsoft.com --> install files, updates, etc

    www.diners.com, www.citibank.com, etc --> get all your banking details (for even more fun, continue the man in the middle attack and show them the real details, then after a few days do a mass login and transfer on all the logins you have grabbed)

    Worst thing is, get a half decent botnet and the sites you have poisoned won't even notice they are being hit, as the IP addresses connecting to them will be nice and distributed.

  21. Botnets in Honeypots on Observing Botnets with Honeynets · · Score: 1
    I found this article to be very interesting, but noted the following section in the writeup;
    We use snort_inline for Data Control and replace all outgoing suspicious connections. A connection is suspicious if it contains typical IRC messages like " 332 ", " TOPIC ", " PRIVMSG " or " NOTICE ". Thus we are able to inhibit the bot from accepting valid commands from the master channel. It can therefore cause no harm to others - we have caught a bot inside our Honeynet.
    I'm wondering why the Botnet writers don't put in something a little more serious to check if they are stuck in a honeypot. I was picturing something like the mafia, where you can't become part of the inner circle unless you commit a hit. Just like how undercover cops won't commit murder or serious crimes, the honeypot runners won't allow the machine to infect other machines, as it goes against what their objectives are.

    The botnet writers could set it so a machine isn't accepted into the botnet until there is a verified secondary machine infected - use unique IDs submitted to an irc session, usenet channel, email address or web page to verify a secondary target, then allow access to the core botnet control areas. Once the initially infected machine has access to the botnet and has the latest software and target information, it could update the secondary machine while not revealling the main botnet information.

    Sure, this won't stop people who are willing to let their machine infect other machines in the persuit of your botnet, but it would stop the current honeypot approach, and cause some serious moral dilemmas for those writing honeypots.
