Say what you like about Caldera, for a while it was quite simply teh best distro evar!
Why shouldn't SCO use every means at their disposal to protect their intellectual property rights ? The USA is a democratic republic, if you don't like the laws, vote for someone to change them, but stop whinging and whining because someone hires a lawyer.
I suppose you are one of those people who thinks 'lawyer jokes' are funny.
Its good enough for most people. What is the point of this ? I cannot tell the difference between photos taken on a 3.5 MegaPixel digital camera and those I take on my 35mm Minolta.
Yet again the Linux so-called elite, conspire to ruin Linux's chances in the marketplace by sowing confusion and complexity. As someone with years of experience in the marketing world, I am constantly amazed at the willingness to pollute the acronym space with content free "TLAs" such as "GNU"
Basic marketing 101 (and an undergrad course in psychology) would tell them that the normal person is only capable of remembering approximately 7 items of data in their short-term memory, but now we have to remember HTTP, HTML, XML, XSL, DTD, PHP, SSL, DSL, ADSL, ISDN, Perl, etc etc etc
This is a text book example of the tail wagging the dog from a marketing perspective.
I have been following the standardisation of the web for many many months now, but one thing has become clear, E-commerce will NEVER become popular so long as there are so many confusing acronyms involved. The guys in charge of marketing Linux absolutely MUST work to reduce the number of acronyms. One possible solution would be to merge those protocols which are not all that different. For example, why not merge XML with SGML ? (they could call it XSGML or SXGML or perhaps XMSGML), they seem to address the same problems. Or would that be too simplistic a solution for their pampered elitist ivy-league minds to comprehend ?
If something is not done URGENTLY, and I mean URGENTLY, Linux (and other more experimental derivatives such as FreeBSD) can never hope to be taken seriously as an e-commerce platform by the people who count - the accountants.
The miracle of Linux is that anyone actually runs it at all, considering one seems to require a masters in computer science to install it! (contrast this with NT4 which was so easy to install, we let our receptionist upgrade her own machine).
As usual my "open source" advice is free. Hopefully this time my valuable advice will be taken into account the next time the w3c smell an acronym brewing.
Finally, in conclusion, as an American, I am saddened that the Internet seems to have been commandeered by a European based protocol. Was America so short of talent we had to buy the HTML protocol from Tom Berners-Lee at CERN ?
Think of the security implications of the worlds strongest economy, running an e-commerce protocol developed by a foreigner from Socialist Europe. Remember the wall has not been down for that long. Who knows what kind of trojans might be lurking within the depths of these complicated protocols.
I am afraid I am behind Al Gore on this point, how can this be necessary in the home of smart corporations such as Microsoft and Intel ? The answer is the vast subsidies given by European socialist governments to fund development of the HTML specification.
The solution is clear. The federal government should mandate and strongly subsidise the use of Microsoft software for all US corporations involved in e-commerce. Only with a US-developed set of protocols can we be assured of the security of our transactions.
Spot on, and this would be a very good thing for the Japanese govt to do. It would be protectionism in the guise of 'protecting national security' something the American govt are masters of!
Unlike our own lame-assed western governments who permit just about anything so long as there is money to be made...
Sometimes I think we could learn a lot from the Japanese.
They shafted our asses in the car market in the 70s and 80s, and now they shaft our butts in the consumer electronics arena, too.
Who remembers when most American families owned an RCA tv or a Zenith ? Not many below the age of 40 I'll bet. Who in their right mind would buy an American vehicle in preference to a well-build Japanese one ? No-one, that's who.
All in all, you have to wonder who came out best from WWII. Those clever Japanese seem to have beaten us at our own game - Capitalism!!!
I cannot help thinking that if everyone just used Java or Smalltalk for application development then we would not have to spend so much of our energies on the laborious tasks of 'porting' our 'legacy' apps.
Why oh why oh why didn't the suits realise this all those years ago when they all jumped on the C++ bandwagon instead of the Smalltalk80 one ?
Not content with producing the virulantly racist 'Aladdin' with all its sterotyping of middle-easterners, now we are all supposed to sit idly by whilst Disney brings back a species that died out over a million years ago!
Have they thought this through ? What happens if it escapes ? What about if it becomes sentient ? We need some legislation enacted quickly to prevent this kind of 'science' from taking place once and for all.
Didn't we learn anything from the German experience with airships ? These things are basically just huge flying incendiary bombs chock full of explosive hydrogen and helium.
The first time there is an electrical storm, these things will go up in smoke, possibly killing innocent people on the ground, since by definition, wifi airships will be stationed above urban areas.
This is yet another example of humans being too stupid to learn from their mistakes.
There's a reason we don't still travel by airship, you know!
Just how fast do these things actually need to be?
I mean, are we so pressed for time that we have to speed up everything ? What happened to patience ? Are Americans so obsessed with saving time that they will do absolutely anything to shave a few seconds off burning an MP3 ?
No wonder American men have a worldwide reputation for premature ejaculation! They are just trying to save themselves valuable time.
Good lord dude. What the hell do you need with 400 HP on something as small as an S4? Like changing tires much? How about cylinder heads? I heard those were real cheap now...
What do you mean the S4 is small ? In Europe it is considered to be a standard sized vehicle. 400BHP is high but not unusual in European luxury sedans. (Something to do with the fact that the Autobahns have no speed limits).
The high HP mainstream luxury sports cars (S4, M3/M5, 911, Corvette, etc), in general are limited at the power that they get because a) Its damn fast as is and b) its actually reliable at those HP/Torque numbers. Reliability has nothing to do with it. The German vehicles are limited by an agreement with the german govt that all cars be restricted to 155MPH. Given that this limit is not expected to be exceeded, they tune the vehicle to produce maximum torque and power below this speed. There's a very good reason why $150,000 Ferraris are in the shop for serious engine maintenance every 3000 miles: namely that there are physical limits with what can be done with internal combustion engines without sacrificing reliability. Hell, you'd think if they could make one that didn't require massive maintenance on a short schedule, they could sell it for twice as much.
Not quite. Ferrari engines are release in 'race tune' and are commonly V12s. There is a lot of complexity in there, and complex race-tuned cars that do low commuter milages tend to need more servicing than non race-tuned cars.
A better example than the Ferrari would be the Porsche 911/996 Carrera S4 or the BMW M5. Both these vehicles have respectable service intervals and are about as reliable as any car you can buy.
Finally I have to laugh that you consider the Corvette to be in the same league as the M5 and the 911. Maybe in a straight line:-)

True security can only come from OSs such as OpenBSD which have a proactive security audit. Mind you, I sometimes wonder if corporations really want security. They don't really care who sees your data, as evidenced by the countless hacking attacks we are always reading about.
Given that Microsoft still ship product with buffer overflow errors, I cannot see them securing all 30million lines of WinXP any time soon.
Given that nearly all Linux users hate the current patent system, would it not be highly hypocritical of us to vote for this position, thus acknowledging the legitimacy of the stupid patent system we have here in the USA ?
I suggest instead of voting, you write a letter to your representative explaining why software patents are bad, and at the same time, asking why your state is using paid-for software when there are free alternatives that work just as well (StarOffice anyone ?).
How is this 'news for nerds' ? I mean, if you are into astrology you already know the planets are lining up, and if you are not into astrology you just don't give a fuck!

Because that way, ISPs would save themselves loads of money. I predict that ISPs which make their customers use Microsoft will go out of business very quickly indeed!
