Small problem with that...You can't just upload stuff to some ethereal place called Kaaza or whatever- It goes to someone else's PC, where it's just as (or more) vulnerable as it was on your systems.
I hate to burst your rosy-colored bubble, but packing up and moving out of the country isn't something most people can do, especially recent graduates.
And "outside work outs its outside the contract, sue them."? Yeah, that's just what we need....more frivilous lawsuits.
From your tone, it sounds like you don't live in the US(forgive me if i'm wrong), and again- Skipping the country on a moment's(or even a large) notice isn't exactly easy, and simply abandoning the problem won't solve anything anyway.
"Sorry, it's late and I got irked, but we're still not up at the.5TB range."
There's one person here on our DC(DirectConnect) hub sharing 421 GB at the moment, and several more at 100-290 GB....Not quite there yet, but give em time:)
Might not be legitimate/legal stuff, but hey, a need is a need.
"I'm pretty sure the target for these isn't billy hardcores mp3 collection, or filthy mcnasties porn jamboree. MP3s are small potatoes. Even the most 'hardcore' I've seen have no more than a few dozen cd-rs full. It's hardly the killer app for big storage."
I'm guessing you're not a college student...I'm certainly not "billy hardcore", but I personally have 16 gigs and counting worth of just mp3's, and I can guarantee you there's people around here with even more.
Not to mention DVD rips, pr0n, copies of game CD's, full backups, etc.....I know plenty of "normal" people who would kill for something like one of those drives, and not just to brag about it.
If you're opening up the case for every problem you had/have with your PC, you either-
1. Have a POS system.
2. Don't know what you're doing.
3. Are trying to exaggerate your experiences to sound impressive and puff up Apple's reputation.
Aside from removing a faulty video card (which was promptly replaced by Gateway), I have NEVER had to open my PC's case to fix a problem, over the course of 10 years, 3 systems, and 4 different OS's.
"I have found XP to be terrible both in general speed (crispness, responsiveness to clicks, etc.)"
Do you have any actual benchmarks on this? Any real stats at all?
"stability (especially in an environment where the machine is pushed hard)"
Well, I had 7-10 browser windows open, Winamp, IM, a few other small apps, and Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Fireworks open almost continuously for a good 24 hours over the last two days, and....No freezes. Not even an app crash. I would hope that would be considered at least a modicum of stability.
In fact, I haven't had anything bring the system down at all, in the month i've been using XP so far.
Don't get me wrong, I have a Linux partition too, but geez....I've had my system totally freeze under Linux for something stupid like my gamepad not being detected.
Oh, you're not interested in it, so it's not important?
I see, yep. Ok.
"If it were Doom III im sure we would understand"
If you're going to rant, at least make up your mind....You're whining about game stories beating world politics, EXCEPT if it's Doom III, then it's worth it. Riiiiiight....
Oh, and the checkboxes to exclude stories are there for a reason. Use em, mmkay?
Last time I *had* to reboot was yesterday to disconnect the power cable so I could put some new RAM in.
As of right now..."\\SHINIGAMI has been up for: 1 Days, 3 Hours, 55 Minutes, 55 seconds", and I fully expect that it will stay up unless I need to boot into Linux to run some benchmarking for a class project.
"You mean it crashes all the time and sends your personal data to a marketing firm?"
Not that I like Microsoft all that much, and you're probably just joking, but....
I just upgraded from an almost constantly crashing Win98 install to WinXP Pro, and over the course of a few weeks so far, I have not had anything but single apps crash a few times...No reboot-requiring freezes whatsoever. Quite a nice break from Win98 freezing before it even finished booting sometimes:)
Score of 194,398 with the values I posted before...Left leg bent in half and got caught on the stair for roughly 5 seconds, racked up 177,000 points before he got off the first couple steps:)
Like violence and sex isn't on normal non-scrambledlocked cable channels already? How have you you kept your kids from watching that stuff?
Just like the government, the cable company should not be a babysitter. If you don't want your children watching explicit material, then sit down, and TALK with them.
1. Blank CD's certainly don't cost a few dollars each.
2. For anyone with broadband and access to decent filesharing, finding complete albums online takes neglible effort. Granted, dial-up negates this, but that brings us to....
3. Making a copy of a single album from an existing copy hardly takes a long time.
I think as long as filesharing and the like exists, users will prefer it, especially since it's free. It may only be a few dollars, but why(besides ethics) spend it if you don't have to?:)
"It's not stupid, it's just an often-entertaining series of books to flesh out the Star Wars universe. It's not going to win any SF awards. "
So why even bash him or do all this comparing in the first place? He writes stuff that's good for an entertaining read, and doesn't really claim to be otherwise.
Gawd, is the "if it doesn't have a deep, involving plot, and isn't perfectly written, it's pretty well trash" mindset going to infect books as it did movies and gaming?
Maybe i'm missing something, but why the hell would that be worth keeping in the first place?
Yes, I know it was Toriyama's original vision and all that, but geezus....Don't we already get enough lewd crap in mainstream TV?
Maybe i'm not much of a "sensitive viewer" (not really), but I think sometimes one just needs to sit back and watch the freakin' show without worrying that every word of dialogue and drawing is perfectly in place.
I'm sorry, but it's getting so I can barely stand all the people popping up in anime discussions, whining about how US-shown anime has been completely massacred and all, and that little quip at the end is just a little too much.
Oh, please....You're deluding yourself if you think the average user nowadays uses a 386 with Lynx.
By comparison, my parents have a P4 2.2 Ghz machine with XP( and an 80 gig hard drive ), and even my grandma has a 500 Mhz system with decent storage and Win 98.
If you don't like graphics, fine, but don't assume everyone else feels the same way.

I won't claim to know what you're actually doing, but that sounds really wasteful....
This bill was blocked because, in the long run, fees would be HIGHER.
"Among the objectors to the bill were two prominent religious broadcasters and a classical music station, Lanier said. They told Helms that the long-term precedent that would be set by the agreement was worse than having to pay higher royalty rates in the short term, Lanier said. "
Someone did the math above, and it's almost 10x more per year using the "lowered" plan on average.
"With RedHat or Mandrake or SuSE you get to install de novo yearly. What fun !"
I just posted this above, but it bears repeating again....Assuming you've setup proper sources on Mandrake...."urpmi --auto-select", and grab a sandwich.
Small problem with that...You can't just upload stuff to some ethereal place called Kaaza or whatever- It goes to someone else's PC, where it's just as (or more) vulnerable as it was on your systems.
Seeing as how the writer is a woman, and an editor of the magazine, I doubt it.
Try reading the article first, at least.

Anything close to a full power shove on the left foot has got me scores from 73,000-135,000.

Sure thing-
:)
I had to spend a grand total of 2 minutes getting 2 RPMS(libole20, and libgda0) from Speakeasy to satisfy dependencies, then:
rpm -ivh gnumeric-1.0.9-1mdk.i586.rpm
And done. Hardly a day. This is the same for almost any package, and could easily be done more automatically if I wished
Too unsure of your position to post non-anonymously, obviously.

"I never used *nix before Wednesday, Oct 23, 2002. Now I am using Debian, learning something every minute I read and try."
Let's be fair here....Since you've obviously mastered time travel, you have an unfair advantage
