At PSU Physics , we use a variety of OSS for research. Most notable is our computing cluster which runs particle simulations and such on Linux. I'm unawae of any who have reversed drivers for their instruments to run on OSS in my department, however many researchers use PERL to analyze the results.
I couldn't agree more. I've been in the system for years and I've seen many bright people become discouraged with the game and give up. Thank god for MIT's OCW.
I'd just like to point out that this type of business is nothing new to these types of companies. In many cases, these are reformed _CABLE COMPANIES_. Let us not forget the mind numbing realities of television. Who is really in control of television ? The advertisers.
Will the web be assimilated as well? Are we allready too late?
Reality: bob buys a computer and begins surfing. what sites do you think he will see? He will probably hit MSN.com or aol or something related where he will be encapsulated into their version of the internet which only really links to itself.
The other day I tried a new napster clone and was supprised to see it connected me to dalnet after installation. VNN 2000 is the Java based p2p that I'm referring to. It suffixes your name with _VNN or somehting and tosses you into #vnn on dalnet. It's not supremely obvious at first, but you do get their motd and such. Just recently I believe they have had some trouble with the irc end and may have dropped it.
On another note, what happens when they take it to the next level? Will we ever have to worry about ftp and such?
I have been working with the various UO(Ultima Online) server emulator teams through the years and we have had minor complaints and letters, faxes, etc.. but no real action has been taken to my knowledge. Right now there are piles of servers running "Sphere" possibly the fastest/best UO server emu- not to mention some servers with over 1000 active accounts. Early in the development of a different emulator(uox), one of the devs put in a few lines of code that would verify that the person connecting to the server had an actual origin account, this was of course cracked quickly, though it did seem to make osi happy.
I am sure they will have crazy ways of making people pay for stuff on these boxes.. Also im not sure if i could deal with a giant AOL logo in my hands. One of my AOLing clients was AMAZED when i told him that his son could send email from his college account, and he could receive it on his AOL account. "Are you sure?! You mean he doesnt need AOL to send mail to me?! Thats Crazy!"
youre not making this very easy, poag =).. anyway in all seriousness.. your teams work is gorgeous and should be in an art museum of some kind. Thanks for the awesome tiles.
I honestly do not see the sony playstation as event a remote threat to wintel, however "information appliances" are a must for the future and there is a great deal of money to be made in this.
who uses cvs anymore? *giggle*
By the way, backports.org has a wonderful woody backport of subversion.

I've had mine for a year and have had none of these problems! I use Orinoco wireless every day.

That is such a poke at Gate's book: "The Road Ahead"

I'm still waiting in State College, PA. There has been rumors of adephia taking over.
I wonder how this would weigh in with one of those old compaq raid array servers or maybe the original ibm XT case. hee
