shouldn't people at Microsoft be more concerned with securing their own product and making it a better program rather than just spreading the usual FUD?
Surely by now even the common-folk are tiring of this rhetoric.
this is a boon to hobbyist developers everywhere. I used to be a big fan of AMOS on the amiga before BlitzBASIC hit big, so I understand the grounding.
I have recently found, however, a C library which makes game coding as easy as Blitz and AMOS. Perhaps simpler. Even better, it's cross platform. So for those looking at something a little different, check out Allegro.
I didn't know anyone in NZ was into making demos. It might have motivated me years ago... e me so we don't troll on here too much. I'd be into going over to one of these parties too..
what I like about these events in Europe is that they are also demo parties, like Assembly in Finland.
There is some info on Dreamhack's site about the demoscene portion of the party.
All in all, being stuck on the other end of the planet (I'm in New Zealand), I'm very jealous of the demo sceners and the parties that go on in Europe.
BlitzMax (the mac version of blitzbasic, but 2d) does not seem to exist yet. rumours date back to 2002, but there is no mention of it on BlitzBasic's product pages.
Extreme Basic is a work in progress that seems like it's going to be released for PC and Mac. However, the commands are different for mac and pc, so it's not going to be cross platform -- unforgivable in my eye.
Seeing as they don't exist, should they even be on this list?
come up with a new concept. it doesn't need to be redone. those who hate the original are not going to watch a remake, because they're sick of everything else being remade.
and those who love it won't need to watch it because they like the original enough.
only the serious fanboys will watch the remake for completeness, and yes, mr Raimi will make a few dollars off them.
BUT he won't gain any more respect as a film maker. He'll just be another Hollywood wanker.
you could just divorce the bitches and get together with someone who doesn't mind you looking at porn.
I have such a big collection of porn that it doesn't fit on any one computer. and I run my own porn site and she doesn't care.
Two things that will always stay in my life before my woman: porn and comics. and computer gear. and other gadgets. ok, four. she's number 5. oo. that doesn't sound too good does it? ah, if she finds out, she'll leave me, and I'll be with someone else until they figure it out.
either way -- the porn stays.
have I gone off topic here?
obnote: if my computer makes it easier for me to find my porn, I'm happy. if she gets upset that she finds porn on my computer because of advanced metadata, then she can buy her own damn machine with her own damn data.
sure. neighbour was changed to neighbor, colour was changed to color. oh man, it's monday morning and my brain isn't working at full capacity. I'll try and remember more and let you know. hell, I could spend hours looking through my dictionary...if only I had brought it to work.
what was the topic here? I'm sure I've lost the plot.
After all, they need to save their cash for the money they'll loose when it comes to the countersuits after they loose
I think you mean lose, not loose.
Both words are quite different.
That sheep you share with your friends is loose, but Kerry is a loser. You see? Why the words aren't Looze and Loose is beyond me. It would have save a lot of confusion. Mind you, American's have changed a great many words like Realise to Realize for the sake of correct pronunciation.
this is funny. it reminds me of the old argument of Amigas vs PCs.
All my PC friends used to tell me that they would never buy an Amiga because they were just games machines. Showing them that quality business software existed - from wordprocessors like, ahem, Kindwords, to video editing hardware and software, nothing could convince them. Meanwhile, they played Leisure Suit Larry, King's Quest, and Space Quest. But Amigas were just for games.
Now the argument is reversed. People will not change to the competition because they can't play games.
It strikes me as amusing, but I think that PC people enjoy two things:
upgradability
low prices
People will not, in general, move to a proprietary hardware system, because they can always find a whitebox cheaper. They then subconsciously convince themselves that they are part of the better camp.
If the general population does not change to the Mac platform, then the best interests of the game publishers and Apple are not met by porting every last little game released.
That's why only the best make it to the Mac. They are financially viable.
If an Xbox plays the games, buy an Xbox - you are guaranteed that the game will work with your hardware. And Apple won't get stuck in an endless support cycle for games which don't make them money.
I'd say the people who started the site are buying themselves new porsches after the signups in the last few hours.
The only reason I haven't signed up is cos I'm waiting for more money to be available on my credit card next week. ah hell with it. I'll sign up for one month now...
Do we really need full entertainment and guidance systems with internet access in the car? Aren't people bad enough at driving without needing more distractions?
The next step for Microsoft is to write an OS which controls the lower level functions of the cars. Once this happens, I'm selling my car and never going on a public street again. Even if my car doesn't have a MS OS running it, other people will -- and their cars will be completely unpredictable...
Imagine what'll happen when we have flying vehicles. Even our houses won't be safe.

that's part of the problem. it's all very vague. I like quotes like this:
"In simplified terms, Cedega loads a game's binary into memory on a Linux system and then dynamically links to code that provides an implementation of the Win32 APIs that the program is using."
Wouldn't it have been simpler to say something like, I dunno, "Cedega lets you run Windows games on Linux."
If you don't sign up, you don't actually get any useful info off the website. Whoever wrote the copy for the page used a lot of big words, a lot of buzzwords and just sounds like a tosser.
If I'm not logged in, NOWHERE does it tell me how the payment method works. Nor does it give me a demo download. It gives me nothing. Try logging out of it and browsing it.
The problem is that 99% of customers are complete and utter morons. They install whatever they damn well please, regardless of licenses. Every time an audit happens, who has to pay the fines for all the illegal software? Not the users who have installed them and cracked them to work fully.
I'm sorry, but even though I'd like to agree with you on principle, experience tells me otherwise. Admins do what they have to do to protect the company. If the higher percentage of users had a clue, maybe more admins would let them have more access.
Maybe you should target your anger toward the clueless masses of users, not admins. Remember, admins are just doing their jobs. IT Managers get penalised when the network doesn't run smoothly. When the IT Managers get penalised, the admins get penalised.
I just tried that, but I can't seem to get all the cheese off. and the smell of anchovies... lucky I'm a UNIX admin and don't need to hang around humans.

I had something similar for the C64.
;)
In fact, I probably still have my amiga copy of the Shoot-em-up Construction Kit somewhere. you want to buy it??

Money is not everything.
but I sure sleep better when I can afford to pay all my bills.

is that the article dated 2002 or the apple "discussion" which is more like a feature list with lots of marketing shit?
I can't find any recent discussions that would provide any insight.

it's happened to me before, but I can't find a download link or a price link. is it free, is it shareware, is it commercial?
there just seem to be press releases upon press releases..
