correct. but the point of the article was that webcomics as a medium will take off. I personally think that creators of webcomics see it either as a stepping stone to print comics, or as being able to publish something that print publishers wouldn't touch - as I mentioned, for legal reasons, or for quality reasons.

Not that they're bad and shouldn't exist. Some have very loyal "cult" followings, they're just not financially viable in print.

The number of print titles that do make it to print, but only last a few issues due to low sales are surprisingly high. The numbers of comics which are completed, solicited, and not ever printed due to low demand is even higher.

Webcomics stands to change all that, but more quality comics need to see the medium.

    and stuff.

buried deep somewhere... but what I think is the problem is that games need to be written for a WIDER audience. the people that play the currently available games do think they're fun, otherwise they wouldn't play them. there are so many different type of games out there, that choosing something fun is the onus of the purchaser.

Sony helped the market considerably, by openeing up the market of games to non-geeks. a lot of games out there are starting to appeal to those geeks girlfriends now. we've still got a way to go, but companies like nintendo are holding on for dear life to their old ways, to the old types of games.

as good as they were in their day, the world has moved on. Microsoft (sadly) have given the world more proof that Sony was right. They are helpingto extend the market.

But Ms Xbox here is right. The developers need to develop the games. But maybe they're too afraid of taking too big a risk. If they make a game about creating your own garden, how many sales will they make?

Money makes the world go round. and unfortunately for some potential gamers, their perceptions of fun may not be financially viable.

  7. can't top print comics yet... on The Rebirth of Comics · · Score: 1

as a collector of comics for over 20 years, the things I see as a problem are:

online comics can't be read in bed or on the shitter unless you print them out - and who's going to do that for one strip?

    online comics can't be collected.

However, I am impressed that some comics like User Friendly, PvP, Dungeon (I think that's its name?), and others have been collected in trades and/or normal comics. It does show that some webcomic creators do have what it takes to make it in the world of "real comics."

But that's part of the problem. MOST, not all, but most webcomics are very very low quality, unfunny, or contain copyrighted material - i.e.; sprite comics.

In time, I think this will be more viable as a business, but this isn't the time. And this isn't a rebirth. It's just somebody realising what's been going on for nigh on a decade.

but overall, Nintendo refuse to publish the sort of games that people like to play and buy. Quake for example. It has gore, it has guns, and it has violence. But it's a hell of a lot of fun.

More adults, or more "mature" people enjoy violence and sex in their games. That doesn't make them more mature mentally, but it does make them older. Hell, I still collect comics. What does that say about me?

I'm older. I've been playing games for YEARS. I've been reading comics for YEARS. Now I'm all growed up and I'm allowed to look at nekkid women. and I'm allowed to play with firecrackers, thus fueling my desire to blow shit up.

Surely girls like this sort of thing too.

Well, obviously as the numbers show.

nintendo don't get it. they're in a totally different world. They think women want Barbie or Care Bears games.

My previous point which was mistakenly modded as Off-topic was just that. Nintendo should be looking at the results of polls like this to work on their product line. Otherwise they'll be the next Sega.

maybe not everyone's cup of tea - they are personally my favourite band on the planet - they have been offering MP3s of ALL their songs (8 CDs + other live recordings and compilations making 19 CDs all up!!!).

All MP3s have been produced by Manowar in their studio and cost US$0.99 each. or you can buy the entire albums in MP3 format for $5.99.

You tick what you want, cash in and you have 8 hours to download the songs.

It's a great idea because they know they can't stop people from pirating things, but at such a low price, most real fans and honest people will fork out such a pittance.

I have all of their CDs and some are starting to show their age. Being able to download them off the net, I can still support the band and not need to re-pay full price of a CD when mine are so scratched that they aren't listenable any more.

don't judge the OS by it's look. it is THE MOST functional gui by far that I have ever used. all 3 mouse buttons have their specific uses and this works seamlessly with all the apps.

all coders stick to strict design guidelines to make sure everything works the same.

and the memory management is 2nd to none.

imagine a window of slider bars so that you can adjust how much memory goes into an app. may not be so important now on PCs which have half a gig of RAM, but in the days of a couple of megs, being able to temporarily drop the font cache by a few kilobytes so that you could run another app was VERY handy.

then when the other app finishes, simply slide the little bar for the font cache back up. if you want to do mega FTP work and needed more fonts, bump the font cache up.

once you use it _properly_, then you can decide whether you love or hate it.
