I recommend you spend more time studying history. When Japan attacked us in 1941, they did so without any declaration of hostilities prior. We had not attacked them. Our soldiers and sailors in Pearl Harbor were not in a state of alert. It's one of the biggest cheap shots in the anals of civilization.
In 1945, Japan had been beaten. Their millitary forces were smashed, our air force was dropping incendiary bombs on anything that would burn on the main islands, and yet the warlords that ran the country refused to surrender, electing instead to fight a bloody war of attrition that meant the countless slaughter of their own innocent civillian population.
We saw this happen on Okinawa -- civilians told to fight to the death, or die at the hands of their own government. Civilians who where so scared by official millitary propoganda, they preferred to jump to their deaths from the cliffs overhanging the ocean, rather than surrender to an enemy they'd been told would do unspeakable things to them if they surrendered.
On the Japanese home islands, we were slaughtering civillians from the air already, but still no surrender. Our country was faced with the prospect of having to invade with a force of up to a million men, and casualty rates likely to be in the range of 250,00.
If you read history and understand it, you see how dropping the bomb was the best and most humane way of bringing that bloody war to as quick an end as possible.
I've been in and out of bands for 15 years or so, and for me, the motivation to make music has changed over time. First, I was in it for the chicks (the ass). Then, it dawned on me I could make some money, so that was a driving factor for a while.
Although I've never got rich from music, it seems to me that the rich rock stars that continue to perform are in it less for the money than for things like fame, and yes, for the pure sake of creating great music.
For me, an arguably "failed musician" (failed rock star?) money certainly is no longer the motivation, yet I still pour a ton of time and effort into making music with my friends (much to the chagrin of my wife). Why do I do it?
Music is a way I can discover connections with other people, be they members of the band I play with, or in the audience listening. And thanks to modern digital communication technology, I can capture that music and re-live it indefinitely. If someone were to make that kind of recording cumbersome, or worse, illegal, whatever innovation I might come up with would most likely never come about (or at least never get captured), because it would be just too hard at that point.
Dvorkin, like so many on both ends of the pollitical spectrum, places the blame for his predicament not on his own shoulders, but at the feet of the opposing pollitical party. Get real! 90% of all polliticians give nothing more than token lip service to the plight of the un- or under-employed.
He'll find solutions to his problems much faster if he wakes up and takes responsibility for his career, instead of waiting for some populus pandering pollitico to come rescue him.
Two of the worst jobs I've ever had came through headhunters. Nowadays, their reputation is so sullied, I would expect most hiring managers to shun even "reputable" ones, because of bad prior experiences.
Clearly the author has corrected theirself to indicate that indeed, Maryland was in fact too complex a proposition. The correct state for primative doping is Minnesota.
I own a 10Gb ipod, and have made more than one attempt at jogging with it. It will last about 1 mile until the device stops working. I was afraid I fried something permanently, but luckily, it came back to life a few hours later.
Is anyone else paranoid enough to envision ES5 as a front set up to download clandestine malicious programs to the boxes pulling down the files from their site?
I'm no fan of the MPAA, or the Israli Government, and I don't want to add fuel to their arguments to shut down P2P, but, doesn't anyone worry about connecting to a renegade server in Palestine? Doesn't it seem too easy?
C'mon, girls in gaming is different than girls eating lunch.
To use your analogy: If you went to lunch every day and saw maybe one or two other women there, if any, wouldn't you raise your eyebrows a bit to learn that there's a cafe in town with close to a 50/50 ratio of men to women?
To put it another way, if your girlfriend/wife/sigother looked upon your eating habits in a condescending or jealous manner, constantly trying to brow beat you into 'growing up' and forgetting about 'lunch' alltogether, would it not surprise you somewhat to learn that there actually do exist females who like to go for an occasional sandwich in the middle of the day?
You have more faith in the robots than I. They will undoubtdedly have *some* capacities that exceed humans, but upon which criteria do you judge a species to be greater than another? Since robots will be born of humans, they can in turn inherit some of our failings, no?
My point is, humans do and will have *every* right to fight for supremacy, if for no other reason, than to allow the competing species to prove theirs.
"You are probably referring to the Book of Mormon, which is also static"
:-)
Heh, sorry, but at first glance I thought you said "satanic"!
My bad
What a load of horse crap!
We didn't want to wait because people were dying every day the war dragged on. Who was your history teacher, Osama Bin Laden?

In TOS, there were examples of the entire ship entering the atmosphere, although it was clear the ship was not designed to do so on a regular basis.

...and perhaps the funniest. For more proof, check out the eulogy he delivered at a memorial for Graham Chapman.

Yes, the battery was fully charged.
