All of the arguments in this and many other threads seem to be based in anti-trust law. This set of laws is an abomination. To make it legal for a company to one thing when they are small and then it is illeagle to do it when you are large is absolutely stupid. How can anyone call that a level playing field. I am posting this from Netscape under Linux. I use Linux because I have a choice. I do not want my choice taken away. MS is losing market share without the lawsuits, to me this means they are able to be beaten, on a fair playing fiels without the gov't becoming involved. Some of you out there in/. land seem o give up all principles when it comes to hating MS. Any other time you would be anti-gov't but because they are going against MS you root for them. Hate causes ratinal people to do irrational things. I do not hate MS, I do not like their products so I use something else. I have good friends who like MS, and they use it. They have a choice and they exercise it.
How do you claim to agree with removing a companies choice on how to run their business ? This is a ludicrous argument. You claim the consumer should have choice (which they do) but a company larger than a certain size should not. You are so blinded with hate that you cannot see the flaws in what you claim to believe. If the DOJ was suing Red Hat, there would be some supporters but not as many and some of you out there would side with Red Hat while siding with the DOJ in an MS case. This is a double standard. Enough for now.
First off read my post, I am not making fun of people that don't speak proper English. I in fact am not Russian, I just didn't order the languages I speak in order. Secondly my point was that if you are going to post something to that is supposed to promote anything for a company you should get it proof read, not that you have to speak proper English. As for you, since you got personal, try getting a login and not being a coward.
I take great offense to what you have said. I am tri-lingual, Russian, Estonian and English. I am not perfect in any of the three languages. But if need be I can at least have someone proofread my work. This poor example of English shows me that they do not care enough about what they are doing to even have a co-worker look over what they type. In context, the poor grammar and spelling are nothing like we see and post here on/., this came from a business site not an open forum. IMHO whoever wrote this page should have at least had someone else read it over.
Your broad assumption that most of us are monolingual, is insulting. It only proves that you have no clue as to the population of/. and could be classified as FUD. So lets think about this logically, we have many international posters here on/. so I would guess that a lot of are multi-lingual. Damn you now I must go make coffee, you have given me a craving. To top it off it is over 90 deg. outside, Oh well.....a little coffee never hurt anyone
I have to disagree with the way the trials are being conducted. I have to disagree with anti-trust laws in general. I think they hurt the market in the long run, after all we would be nowhere near where we are without MS. I do think that a departure from MS is in order but the way the gov't is doing this offends my basic sense of right and wrong. It is not right for one company to be allowed to do something that another company can't do under the law. I stated in my original post and I state again, I want to see Linux beat MS, but not this way. I feel for a true victory to be achieved Linux must win on it's own merits rather than through gov't intervention. We are already getting market share, why not include the things, like Caldera is trying to do, that the public wants and take the market share fair and square. There is no such thing as a level playing anywhere else in life and there shouldn't be one in business. I do not mean to offend anyone but for intelligent people a lot of us are starting to look like the Branch Davidians of the computer world. The MS witch hunt could easily be used for bad publicity. The way they spread FUD and the way the public believes it could really hurt the way the public perceives Linux and it's advocates. We preach an awful lot against MS but do not expect the OS we use to live up to the same standards we would hold MS to.
I would seriously like an explanation on how making a product incompatible with a competing product is a monopolistic practice. Or is it only OK for the smaller company to do to the larger company.
Before you answer, think about this, all Linux distros are incompatible with MS, is this a bad practice...NO. So what if we open source our stuff, some people don't believe in Open Source and they have a right to that belief. What if the intentions of the creators of DR DOS were to steal the windows interface (a stretch, yes). You cannot force a company to release something they have copyrighted. I know that many people here despise copyright and IP laws, but fact is they exist and you have to work within that framework right now. This is a frivolous lawsuit, and for the first time ever I hope MS wins. As for Caldera winning a round, they have won nothing, alomost all cases like this have a dismissal motion filed when they go to before a judge the first time, and over 50% of the time the motion is denied. All that has happened so far is what usually happens. I guess Linux is bad because it was made not be compatible with MS-DOS, no wait it's about Unix...yeah whatever. Get a life folks this one is a bad lawsuit. I want to see Linux win because it is better, not because a lot of people file bullsh*t suits and wear MS down.
First off let me say I think that this is a Good Thing (tm). I just can't wait for the stream of messages from people who think that all corporations are bad, I can see it now "Slashdot Is The Next MS", "I Wonder If Slashdot Will Be RedHat Only", and probably many more pieces of FUD involving anti-profit sentiments. Rob and Hemos: Keep up the fine work, I can't wait to see what/. will become with more money behind it.
1) Resistance is sometimes necessary. It is not entirely bad when an inaccurate article draws flames. We can only hope that the flames are tempered by the presence of more numerous polite comments. And, hopefully, the percent of flames will not exceed the degree of inaccuracy and/or malice in the article.
Whether or not someone is inaccurate flaming only proves that those who respond that way are not capable of responding in a calm and collected manner. Any flame-mail sent under the banner of Linux advocacy is wrong. If this can be publicized the public will see only the hot headed children amongst us, this can only hurt us.
2) The Authors are always free to selectively cite and publish negative emails in order to disproportionately prove "rudeness" on the part of Linux advocates. Since they will quite likely feel defensive, this is always a possibility. Scott Hacker, for example, provided no data on the percentage of flames versus constructive criticisms. It may be that the negative comments were not at all representative of the whole.
You read/., I assume on a fairly regular basis. How can you not assume that most of the e-mails he received weren't flames, we flame each other all day here. I screw up things on my Linux box quite frequently, rarely bad enough for a complete re-install, but I spend a lot of time fixing my mistakes. I do this because I like to run bleeding edge stuff. Users would have to be treated like children: "don't edit that file" "You logged into IRC as root ???!!!!!" etc....etc....ad nauseum. The Linux community can't even agree to disagree on which distro we want to use, bring it up and the FUD flies. If we want to bring Linux to the unwashed masses we must stop throwing FUD around and just be honest.

It might be as early as Q1 next year, they are very excited about this, the reason I was talking ot him is he just sent a quote to me for a few machines and wanted tolet me know what difference there would be in the qoute if I went with Linux. I cannot go with Linux just yet as our apps are certified internally and Linux is pretty low on the certification priority list, but I hope next year we'll get around to making it a corporate standard. Before everyone flames me, I do not certify anything, I just submit my humble requests and hope, we already run everything that is mission critical on Sun or HP, using Solaris or HP-UX, which both work fine.
I am very happy to see HP doing this, it will show the large companies like the one I work for that Linux is a viable OS and not a joke. The high end offering we are no seeing is the step the manufactures have needed to take. This will snowball and we will see it happening. To quote Tony James " The Evolution Will Be Televised".
Oh and one more thing, this is a "Good Thing" lets not turn this whole topic into RH bashing. GET OVER IT. I don't use RH (although I might now) but hey all around this is getting Linux good attention, if you go to HP's site you don't see "Red Hat Linux Systems", you see "Linux Systems". They don't even say it's RH until you read the specs. RH!=Linux but Red Hat Linux=Linux, Debian!=Linux but Debian Linux=Linux. It doesn't matter what flavor they install, at least they are installing it.
MP4 is not an MPEG format at all, they grabbed the name for recognition and it is a proprietary format with massive copy protection built in, it will never fly.
Actually if you want to get technical (and I do) you can make an MP3 that is higher than CD quality. You start with the actual digital masters and compress from there. Most mastering today is done on a computer, usually a MAC but Windows based machines are making a dent in the MACs stanglehold on the recordibng industry, Sound Forge, Dart Pro, and Cool Edit Pro are the reasons I keep a dualboot. I love Linux but there is no audio editing software that even begins to touch the Mac or Windows platform yet. I do mastering at a studio and re-mixes that have been played in clubs nationwide. If you do a spectral analysis of the sond output you will find that CD with it's 44.1 MHz limit does not even begin to compare with high end MP3s, this is not a moot point, becasue as studios begin to relize what they are really capable of they can produce MP3s that have a better sound quality than CDA or Vinyl. We use MP3 as an archive format, when I un-compress an MP3 to burn to CD for distrubtion I have to lower the MHz of the file to make it compatible with CDA. You will soon see MP3s that are much better quality then CDA.
Read the article numbskull, it doesn't run Linux, it runs a hybrid OS that DOESN'T have any third party apps available. How come half of you people don't read the article before you post, I know you are smarter than that
Since I saw too many people who didn't read the article, I won't reply to each one, I'll just start a new thread.
1. They say it's a hybrid OS
so-It's not Linux with a new Windows Manager
3. They say there are no apps yet
so-It's not Linux
4. They say it's a cross between Linux and BeOS so-It's not Linux
This box is not helping pave the way for world domination. I am willing to bet it won't even cut into the MS profit margin. It will be plauged with bugs, bad tech support and send consumers screaming. What it does do is give Linux a bad name if all of that happens, articles like this that the public can see, and then go buy one of these things will hurt Linux in the long run, say the box works OK (it won't be bug free it's version 1.0 of a hybrid OS)then everything might be fien, but if it's as buggy as most 1.0 products then MS can say "llok it runs Linux". This won't be true but it is what is most likely to happen, and besdies if this company is a threat they are small enough for MS to squish them. This box does not run Linux and doesn't have any apps other than a browser, it doesn't support a lot iof multi-media stuff, if you want to just check you e-mail I guess it's cheaper than a good palmtop, but in the long run it won't be worth it.

If they only used the code they wanted from Linux, they wouldn't have to release all of the code. I will explain how this could work if need be.
Unless they pulled just the code they wanted, essintaily creating another proprietary OS.
I didn't mean to send twice, oops ;P
The article says it is running a cross between Linux and BeOS that has no third party apps yet, to me that means a propietary OS.
4. They say it's a cross between Linux and BeOS
so-It's not Linux
