id is an awesome gaming company. I want to see them branch out and try their hand at another genre of games. RPS? RTS? A 'Ninja Gaiden' type game? I bet they could blow the competition away.
Don't get me wrong. I love a good FPS, but maybe it is time for id to try and expand a bit?
You forgot... "good thing I didn't tell him about the start up costs, both monitary and otherwise, to switch over our systems...we're gonna get hosed in the next few quarters. Who needs a 401K or incentive bonuses or shareholder approval anyway?"
If it ain't broke, generally, it won't get fixed. An example: There is so much bad code (inefficient, un-readable, etc...) in our software... but will it ever be fixed? Probalby not. It gets the job done, and to devote resources to update it is seen as a waste at present. The bottom line is the bottom line, and generally the future isn't considered as much as it should. Investors want results now and later...but there is a MUCH bigger emphasis on now.
What you described is hardly the "End of Story". In fact it is just shows how much you don't understand the business world.
To do the same with Linux, these same idiots would need a second computer for googling the answer
HAHAHA... That is so funny. Because no one using Linux has EVER used google to find the answer to their problems. In fact, I'd wadger you've done it on many occassions as well, if not for any reason other than saving time.
Get off your high horse while you can...it is a long fall.
Could be that, but I doubt it. DSL is capped, so when you tally each computer's download rate, we get close to the theoretical limit... to me it isn't surprising when games get laggy and other internet related applications bog down a little.
Be careful, you might be under a contract with SBC. When I signed up, I had to commit to a year of DSL. My experience has been much better (thank god), but I still feel they are a sucky company. Of course I don't have the static connection (unfortunatly), but I don't really have any need for one...though latly I've been wanting to put one up for my web stuff.
Anyhoo, you might want to check your orig. service agreement...just a thought!:)
Watch yourself. Comcast and RCN (RCN is bankrupt fyi) both suck with their high speed internet.
SBC is a crappy company and they will screw you any chance they get, but I have to say their DSL is pretty good in the city (at least they are in the Lake View area. I moved into the city in Nov, and grabbed their DSL (and phone too cuz they made me even thogh i never use it. It was still cheaper than cable at 36 dollars a month[1]. I think comcast wanted like 50, but i digress)...anyhoo, it has been great so far. No outages, and it is pretty zippy.
I only have a problem when me and one of my roommates go nuts on bit-torrent while playing X-box live.
How about everyone post that this is a dupe instead of just ignoring this story and moving on with your life! Could we do that a little bit? Cuz of the 100 messages below only 99 of them speak the obvious.
I know, I know. It is confusing and complicated. I myself didn't believe this was a dupe until I read the 65th post saying it was. To be honest, even then I was a little skeptical. So to be sure I read the next 20 posts. Sure enough they all agreed with the other 65 people: The story is a dupe.
But for some reason, I still wasn't 100% convinced. To be super sure, I took a strole down to my crime lab and ran a few tests. The results?
The framerate on Quake 3 is better when using the Radeon 9800 Pro compared to using a Voodoo 2.
I realized that these benchmark tests were getting me nowhere, so I quickly ran outside and stopped a few people on the street. After explaining the situation on slashdot, 3 people quickly walked away, 2 spit on me, and the last guy asked me for change so he could take the bus. I gave him 35 cents.
At this point I started panicing, as time is running out. I ran back inside read and yesterday's penny-arcade. What an eye opener... it dawned on me: NO ONE FUCKING CARES IF THIS STORY IS A DUPE. JESUS CHRIST, LEAVE IT ALONE AND MOVE ONTO THE NEXT STORY.
Yea! It's the fault of MS!!! Let's not blame the spammers, let's blame a company!
In other news: A local food mart was robbed when the owner turned his back to the register. The criminal, came in, knocked the owner unconscious and stole the money out of the cash register. After a police report was filed, the officers took the owner away in handcuffs saying 'he was to blame, not the robber who stole from him."
The man was quoted as saying, "I guess that is the cost of doing business."
Come on people, just because there is a way to do something doesn't mean it the 'owners' fault. We're talking about criminals here. Place the blame where blame is due.
I'm sick of this crap. Companies offer these sort of incentives all the time to sell their products...
If you don't like the deal, don't buy into it. No one bashes Burger King when the newest Disney movie hits the theater an they have specialized toys for kids. No one slams Wendy's when they team up with the NBA or NCAA and offer collectably cups with their meals.
Instead of whining about how this is going to make people fat and have a heart attack, why don't you think about this for a second. Do you really think people are going to run out and buy 12 big mac means to get a CD? No!
At the end of the day all this does is encorage someone who is already going to eat lunch out that day to go to McDonalds instead of a different fast food joint.
I think the SuperSize Me guy is more ticked at himself for doing that to himself... just who does he think he was educating anyway? Everyone knows fast food is terrible for you, like this opened anyone's eyes.
In other news: Throwing human waste out into the street causes disease. Movie at 11.
I laughed out loud at that part. Apples and oranges. It's like saying that Chevy is a better car company than Ford because the Corvette is faster than the Model T.
Please. Any employee of any company can find the internal flaws and missed oppertunities. I work for a large insurance company and eventhough I'm just a peon, I see several flaws and problems that could easily be avoided. But then again, I see lots of things done very well and successfully.
This is just a case of dwelling on the negative. Another employee could write the completely opposite review of MS and it would be every bit as convinsing.
The problem with a comentary is that it is generally correct... if you just look at the points being made. The other problem with a comentary is that the opposite is usually just as correct. A person can make a convincing argument from any view point, but ultimatly it is the actions of the company that say whether it is true or not.
In MS case, I'm sure they have done many things wrong and missed many oppertunities...yet they continue to make lots and lots and lots of cash. Therefore, this guy can say anything he wants, but it won't change the fact that MS is *definitely* doing things 'right'.
Ah ok. That makes sense then. You're absolutly right, if the technology exists to do this sort of thing, I'm sure it wouldn't be a large step to increase / manage fertility.
I think the world would be better off. The hatreds you talk about occur because of killing. If your grandfather lived 500 years he could see how the Japanese have changed over the years. He might never grow into loving them, but I think the hatred would fade away.
Time generally heals most if not all things. It is the continuous death and reminders that propagate the hatred. Look at Isreal and the Palastinians. I think if they just stopped killing each other for 10 years, the hatred level would drop drastically. I think a big part of the reason they hate each other is that they keep killing each other. It is in their face *all the time*, so they keep renewing the hatred.
I got a little off topic there, but it leads into my next point. Think about high school or college. You or your group of friends had to not like some other group of friends. Perhaps you fought each other, or did horrible things behind each others back, etc... Now 10, 20 years later, do you still not like these people? No, you're probably indifferent. Time has dulled the hatred.
Now take the same senario, but this time you don't get away from the person. They are constantly in your life and the hatred will continue to grow if eents carry on. Therefore, as long as humanity can ensure that wars will be limited as well as other similar actions (ie: Bush in Iraq), I think we'd be just fine.
Now then, this is trivial compared to killing someone in a war or some of the other horrible things that happen in war, but we're not talking 10 years, but 100.
I think a balance would be created and the world would.
Are they really gonna do a Quake IV?

So...how is this flamebait? Can someone explain this to me?

I choose the RIAA not charging 15 - 18 dollars a CD. Then they wouldn't have to sue anyone cuz music would be affordable.
GTA, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, etc...
Interesting...no mention of Yahoo in your post. Biased?
Ya, this might be the case if the story was actually true.
:(
Unfortunatly, you interesting comment has gone to waste.
Sorry man.
Good deal then. Their accounting system must just blow.

[1] basic line cost + tax = ~12 dollars
DSL = 24 dollars.

That is all.
Did you read the article or is it just not in there? Either way, it is available as of *today*:

Word to the wise, the New York Times is dumb.
And the lawyers keep on getting richer, yet Mr Average Joe twiddles his thumbs.
The only real legal issue here is the one that should be brought against the spammers and those that create these ILLEGAL programs.

Dude, whatever. All companies have slogans that suggest this kind of thing.
So, what you really are saying is that McDonald's isn't evil...but all corporations are evil.
You're right!! Down with inovation! Down with capitalism! Down with society! I'm boycotting everything, join me!
Sorry, I didn't mean for this to be an attack on the parent, but the whole message board here.
This really should have been an independent post...I just got fed up with reading the comments and this happened to be the post I was on.
