It's definitely a technically cool little setup. But personally I have no desire to listen to the web. I just thank $higherpower that I have my sight and don't have to use computers like that all the time.
A better thing to have whilest driving long distances is something like this: http://www.dension.com I've had one of these MP3 players in my car for almost a year now, 4,500+ songs at my fingertips! I never listen to CDs any more. Only 12 songs at a time? pfft!
Ok, this guy is seems to be a particularly motivated victim of collateral damage. His paper was pretty much accurate though.
RBLs are primarily a reactionary measure. Sure spammers would keep sending spam from the same server if it were allowed, but they keep getting many accounts all over the world to send from. RBLs are like killing fleas with a hammer. You can't hit them fast enough to keep up, and what about the dog?
Users should not have to deal with being collateral damage, or having their mail arbitrarily filtered before it ever gets to them. Rural internet users may only have one ISP to choose from that's not long distance.
The only real solution to the spam problem is going to be in SMTP itself.
That's very cool. I too live in VA and would love to sue spammers like yourbigvote.com and lovelymailer.com. I've probably received several hundred spams from them this year alone.
I even tried firewalling yourbigvote.com thinking their mail server would get the picture but the connection attempts kept coming, sometimes 5 or 6 every couple seconds, for a solid week. I took them out of the firewall block because I figured I was losing more bandwidth from repeated connection attempts than I was from spam.
But, believe it or not, I decided to try opting out of yourbigvote.com last week and I haven't received anything from them since. I was getting several a day. And yes, I know that opting out can be a very bad thing, but I'm testing my spam filter too, so I actually don't mind extra spam.
So now I'm playing the opt-out game for a while, clicking the opt-out links and keeping a log of when I opt out. So far all the ones I've opted out of (3 or 4) haven't sent me anything. Maybe the big visibles ones (without forged headers) are getting scared about being sued and actually have a working opt-out system.
PC games are generally $10 to $15 cheaper than console games. That's why I don't have a console (well, other than a Dreamcast after it tanked and the games were $5 to $20)
Also, although PC games can technically be superior in nearly every way, PC games are starting to suffer from "console portilitus." More and more games are being created to run on two or more platforms, and the PC gets a quickly ported version that doesn't address many of the advantages a PC *should* offer. As an example, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 was actually much worse on the PC than the PS2, except for the graphics. The PC version doesn't even have a replay system, unless you want to see the whole replay in the "behind the car" view.
Check www.mrqe.com, it gets 50-75% ratings for the most part...
General criticism seems to be it's an hour of boring build-up and then an uncharacteristically action-oriented 2nd hour. But I always thought Trek needed more action anyway.
You obviously have too high an opinion of human nature. Watch a few episodes of "Cops" and call me in the morning. The sleazebags and druggies out there aren't going to stop at your property, some will help themselves to your wife and daughter while they're at it. I know that sounds extreme, but people find themselves in that situation every day, and I don't play the odds with stuff like that.
You're probably caught up in the modern world of computers, offices, Starbucks and malls. What many people forget is how fragile the modern world is. Most people aren't self-reliant any more. Without water or electricity things get bad REAL fast. Looters come out, fires burn, anarchy rules, at least for a while. The police can't handle a natural disaster like a major hurricane or earthquake. It has historically taken quite a while for things to settle down. Are you going to let looters steal your food and water and have your family go without?
I hope I never have to point a gun at anyone, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Most criminals look for easy targets. It's stupid to be an easy target.
So what's the legality of paying for the song from a pay service and then downloading a [bootleg] MP3 of the same song that will play on my car MP3 player (which is where I do 99% of my music listening) from a filesharing network?
We need a complete DOS machine emulator
on
Ultima 7 in Windows?
·
· Score: 4, Interesting
Someone who's a better system-level programmer than me needs to write a program that completely emulates an old DOS machine for gamers. You should be able to pick the virtual video card, memory, sound card, CPU speed (very important), and DOS version. Let each DOS.EXE have it's own settings so you don't have to muck around with them each time.
I'd pay for software like that. Messing around with Moslo sucks.
The first few episodes weren't great at all. I was about to stop watching, but somebody lent me a couple more taped episodes and they were really good. Good old Josh has struck a great combination of interesting characters, unusual situations, and funny dialog. There's just something appealing about a honorable thief and his crew of misfits.
If it really gets cancelled I will definitely miss it, best SciFi since ST:TNG.
Nonsense, I can and do buy MP3s online at emusic.com. They don't have latest popular stuff, but they have plenty that I'm interested in.
I have a HD based player in my car and have 4,500+ songs at my fingertips. I don't want CDs, other than just to rip them to MP3 and put them on the shelf.
As long as there is NO DRM, and the songs are a reasonable price (less than $1 per song) I'd love to buy MP3s of popular artist's songs online.
A special web browser that will only connect to.kids.us domains? What's to stop the kid from running IE? Set up mutliple user accounts, restrict your kid's account from running anything except the special browser? Well most people won't know how to do that.
So, you're back to watching your kid and knowing what they're doing. Which is silly of course, people can't do that!
Seriously though, something catostrophic WILL happen some day, so I think we need to get people living on the moon, on Mars, or maybe even a moon of Jupiter.
Sure a catostrophe may not happen in our lifetime, but whenever it does happen, it will probably take us by surprise because there's always the security thought that "this won't happen to me." Well it can and will.
I'm not an antenna guy so I don't know much about the setup. I just like the connection! I know the link goes from a tower on a mountain ~35 miles away to 100 foot tower at our site. There are 3 foot dish (with vanes, not solid) antennas on both towers. The antennas were around $800 each. Origonally the antenna polarization was vertical, but we got some interference from cell towers or something. They switched it to horizontal polariztion and now we get a good 1.2Mbit+ connection at our site in the middle of nowhere.
I saw a 20/20 type story a year or so ago about a lady whose son developed autism, and after a lot of research she found that removing dairy products from his diet essentially cured his autistic behavior. Check out articles like this:

...your wife is broke down and calls you from her cell phone, and the caller ID says "unavailable"....your brother/sister calls you using a calling card and their number shows up "unavailable".
What I'm saying is there's lots of cases where a number would come up "unavailable", the caller ID system is not perfect by any means.
I spent obscene amounts of money on Pac Man. The store across the road from my childhood home had a Pac Man game and I would be over there all the time playing it. I'm sure I could have bought the whole thing for the amount of money I put into it.
I had the original AIW card. It was nice for a while, but when i upgraded to a GF4 4200 I had to give up my TV/PVR capabilities too. So I'd suggest getting an ATI TV Wonder so you can painlessly upgrade your video card later. I still haven't got around to buying a TV Wonder so I can start recording shows on my computer again.
Oh, and don't get the TV Wonder VE unless you don't want stereo sound.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that. I'm getting repeat mail from spam domains (such as superemailoffers.com) that I've never seen before. :\

I'm going tonight, what the hell?

Well no matter how rich Bill Gates is, MS is #72 on the Fortune 500 list and Wal-Mart is #1. Can't argue with results.

Only if everyone is a programmer or is at least informed enough to seek open source software out.
The magical program the Romanian programmers are going to sell them is a simple "net send" throught he Windows messenger service.
At least he's going to get ripped off a little for a change.

I'm posting this on a 30+ mile wireless link. 802.11 has more range than many people think, given line of sight and good antennas.
