look at the link: it says "partner=GOOGLE" i think NYT already knows about Google... it's a good idea for both: Google gets ppl interested in their news service as it provided access to ALL news stories, and the NYT gets a ton of ads served up via all the traffic Google is gonna generate...

Well cool! If that's the case they should have gave SlashDot an special partner parameter years ago.

It's stuck in that "nothing can change week to week" mentality that Paramount has long imposed on Trek. Worse, it's not even particularly bad like Voyager was early on... it's just... there. More often then not, it's not good or bad. Just something I could care less about.

I think you're onto something here. If it were a serial more like Buffy I think it would be a lot more interesting than "neat little wrapped up in one hour with big bad danger thwarted at the end" episodes. Of course that would be an obstacle to new viewers, but the way this series is going they better do something!

My best memory of the ST:TNG series was the major Borg battle series of episodes. Those were better than all the movies put together.

  4. Re:Theft on Talk To a Convicted Warez Guy · · Score: 1

Therein lies the real dilliema about piracy. Yes, certainly stealing software off a store shelf is wrong. The store paid for the software and now they can't sell it to make a profit. However, a copy of software is not anything tangible. You don't DIRECTLY cost anyone anything by copying software. It's more of a copyright violation, loss of potential sales.

So the next question is, how many people that pirate software would have bought it anyway? There's no way to tell, but the people I know who pirate software wouldn't buy most of it if they had the money.

  5. Re:How about this for a ridiculous contract term? on Musicians vs. RIAA At USA Today · · Score: 1

I was watching a TV biography of the Dixie Chicks. The lead singer said they got a very good record contract by most standards, but they made hardly anything on record sales. The only way a band can make significant money is to tour, and the band has to pay the costs, which is millions of dollars.

There was another special back in 1999 where they were opening a tomb for the first time. Never seen for thousands of years, all that stuff.

Well, as it turned out, it was obvious that Hawass had alredy been in the tomb when the camera followed him in there. Kinda dampened my enthusiasm. He was also totally reckless with the artifacts, are there so many in Egypt that they don't bother being careful any more?

And with Fox involved expect a good bit of tabloid documentary filmmaking, although hopefully National Geographic will temper that a bit.

  10. Get the labels to put their music on emusic.com on Can Poisoning Peer to Peer Networks Work? · · Score: 1

The major labels should look to emusic.com. emusic.com has a great distribution system already in place, I get 300K/sec downloads and the ID3 tags are always good, unlike P2P networks. I just wish they'd name their files without the underscores, but that's easily enough fixed with software.

They're already a great place to find old/obscure stuff, as well as a few breaking bands like The Hives. I even saw some MCA stuff (90's country) on there, so maybe they're putting their toe in the water a bit. Any time I start downloading from emusic I probably get 50 songs.

Give people a way to download music legally and they'll do it. But I bet the big labels want huge royalties for each song.

  11. I used to have no interest in watching Buffy on Faith Returns to Buffy · · Score: 3, Interesting

I ignored Buffy for years because I thought it would be like Beverly Hills 90210 or something. For some reason (I don't even remember why) I started watching the reruns that came on at 7:00 & 8:00 AM on FX. This is (maybe was) one seriously good SciFi show. The whole evil mayor season and the Glory season (I think they were seasons 3 & 4) were interesting, smart, funny, and scary.

The best and most creepy episode is "Hush", where these grinning, silent, evil beings float through town at night and steal everyone's voices and then select a few people each night to cut out their hearts while they CAN'T EVEN SCREAM. About 2/3 of the episode had no dialogue at all, the characters had to communicate in other ways. It was seriously freaky.

I know the past season wasn't as good, but there were still a few stand-out episodes, like the one where Buffy is dreaming (or really IS) in a mental institution and they're telling her that all the slayer stuff is in her mind. And the musical was much better than I thought it would be, it was actually very interesting.

Don't knock it until you try seasons 1 through 4.

  12. This guy wants Google to do his work for him on Mr Anti-Google · · Score: 1

He has over 100,000 names on his web site. His complaint boils down to the fact that if you search for one of them (such as Donald Rumsfeld in the example), they don't show up in Google's search results. The reason they don't show up is because Google ranks search results by the number of sites that link to them, and of course most of his 100,000 pages aren't going to be linked to very often.

So basically this guy wants free indexing and advertising of his content from Google.

If you use a 2nd phone line for your modem, it's easier to justify a cable modem. A phone line around here is around $25 a month, and an ISP is roughly $15. So instead of $40 a month for 56k I can now pay $40 more a month for 2000k!

Well, from reading places like alt.games.grand-theft.auto and gta3forums.com, there is major bitching going on about the slow performance of GTA3. A lot of the complaints are from people with 32MB cards and fast systems, I think GTA3 must need a lot of video memory to perform well.
