I have a twitter account and have never posted, a facebook account and never posted, a youtube and + account and never posed, xda account, yahoo groups, etc. I doubt I've posted on /. in years, but I still read every day. I'm a consumer. And to me these are more news services then social interactions. I post to reddit often, but usually drunk and those accounts don't last long...

Might just make me think about playing it again.

I'm sure there's a lot we don't know about the story. But if there's 146 people in this "study group" then why is one person being targeted? Under most universities rules, if I had given you answers to an assignment, you would be just as guilty of cheating as I would. Simply organizing the group doesn't seem enough to single him out, as every one else still had to subscribe to the group. I agree thought, regardless, this _should_ come down to policy review and discussion.

How cost effective is it to go after every last person saying "Windows sucks!"?
Stating a personal opinion does not qualify as slander or defamation. What is against the law would be making false allegations. ie. Saying "Windows suck!" is different the saying "Bill Gates used my copyrighted code as the basis for MS windows." Now obvisly this would not hurth Bill's reputation in any way. But it is slander if it is a false statement or I had no way of proving it. What DJ article said was that "Gutnick had been involved in various questionable financial dealings." (mycareer.com.au) This is why often in the news people are "alleged" to have commited a crime.

You can't turn this into an ani-Americian flame war because that's not what it's about. US law protects business people from defamation just like ever other country. Also, I'd like to think that it would not matter where the trial takes place. The man was either defamed or he wasn't. What is being questioned here are borders on the internet. A ruling in this case should set precidence internationally. I think that if the defimation suit is justified then Gutnick should be given compensation for the harm the article has done. It shouldn't matter whether this was published in america on american servers. He obviosly had american business dealings or else the Dow Jones would not have written the article.
