    I've found they all can't handle it on their own and need me to do things like enable mp3 playback for them. This is completely not Ubuntu's fault, because as a binary distro they can't include mp3/dvd support, but it still sucks.

    You don't need to get mechanical with this.. I recall hearing a talk by Richard Feynmann on this exact same concept, though fully implemented with standard circuits, transistors, etc.

    There are so many things wrong with your post it is hard to know where to begin. First of all, you are looking at tech support calls to places like Dell, and the fact that they are handled in India as something that affects someone with a bachelor's in CS? You think they should be working that type of job? Second, you say, "failing computer science students often get a business degree.. There is a good reason: The difficulty is a joke compared to computer science." Almost all decent CS schools are primarily engineering schools, and as such they tend to have weak business and liberal arts programs.

    It is much easier to get into a computer science post-doc program than med school. Further, he was making a direct comparison with Biology Post Docs, and honestly there aren't many post docs better than CS one, with regard to pay.

    Even if it doesn't set you up as root is is of almost 0 consequence for a desktop machine made for someone buying the thing at walmart. If your account gets compromised, it is trivial to install a trojan which conviniently logs your keystrokes the next time you type in your root password to install widget 2.0.
     
    As far as the general case virus, as long as the thing destroys all the user's personal files, they aren't gonna care that the thing didn't get priviledged access to low level ports or that it couldn't spoof packets.

    The further out towards the sun that you put this orbiting dust cloud, the less size it has to be (i.e. the shadow it projects gets bigger and bigger). Just a thought.. it probably will still be way more expensive .

    Yeah, so what the hell do you suggest? Air drop food and medicine? That will solve all of their problems? Without education all that will do is cause a population explosion until the problem gets big enough that we can't drop enough food to solve it.

    Those numbers would be very accurate if we stopped making airbags today. Instead, all that R&D is paid for and those numbers will drop dramatically over time.

    Oh I know that. Most DVD players certainly can't decode mpeg4 at HD resolution, that takes some power that wouldn't make sense to put on a DVD player because the only content that would take advantage of it doesn't exist. What I'm talking about is why didn't they just make a new "format" that uses the old format, instead of making us pay for these new exotic lasers. This format would still require a new player, but it would still only need a red wavelength laser.

    The whole deal would have been able to have been released years ago and it would now be at a reasonable price.

    "They are intelligent too!" Yeah, makes sense. They are exactly as intelligent as you. If you go to sleep and leave your game on with your character in a tavern, they go to sleep as well and wait on you before they start leveling up. Yeah. Makes perfect sense. Also, is the world not a continuum? Or did everyone get dropped in when you did and they all started at level 1? Before you existed, no one bothered to get stronger?

    Why do they need support for these huge capacity discs when they also mandate mpeg4 compatibility from the players? They can fit a full length movie in HD now on a double layer DVD if they use mpeg4. What is the point?

    Yeah, I picked up the Dell and a desktop (e510 with a pentium D 2.8ghz and a gig of ram) for $750 a couple of weeks ago. The desktop itself ebays for around $500 so I figure I walked away with the monitor for around $250. I've seen it by itself from dell consistently for ~$400. The article seems way off (but I suppose it might really be that way in Europe).
