Mortgages are granted up to a certain percentage of income. There's an assumption that housing isn't going to be more than X% of income. Say 50%, for argument.
So, Boston rent is $1400, for someone making $2800. Kalamazoo rent is $650, for someone making $1300. Leaving, you guessed it, $1400 and $650 respectively, for buying said plasma TV jacuzzi.
Yes, these are idealized numbers. But do you see where I'm coming from now?
But not nearly as many, per head. Therein lies the problem.
Wealth and cost of living are two very different things. Food and shelter may reflect local wages. But that neat plasma screen is going to come a lot sooner if I'm making a Boston salary than a Kalamzoo salary. Luxury goods are what define wealth in my mind. And they don't tie to local cost of living at all.
Personal perpsective: Memphis? Memphis has warehouse jobs. Large company opens a location in Memphis? We get warehouse jobs. The IT department is in Jersey. The sales force is in Dallas or Atlanta. Over and over it happens.
>Finally, too many of my CDs are starting to skip these days. How about making a CD format that I can't scratch to death? Then I would be more than happy to fork out tons of cash to get all new music.
This is one of my prime reasons for using hard-drive based music. The other being, of course, near instant accessability to my whole collection.
Remember the analog(tape) to digital(CD) changeover? The loss of degradation as repeated copies were made? A scratched CD doesn't strike me as far different from a tape losing defined magnetic patterns. Somehow, I wouldn't count on a less destructable format anytime soon.
Interestingly, "Santa Claus" is associated with pawn shops. The three ball symbol seen upon most pawn shops are three bags of gifts thrown into houses.

Sounds like a good argument, doesn't it? But compelling consumers to use only their product "for quality assurance" ("for your protection")? Ever bought a Mazda that won't run without MazdaGas(tm)?
This is called "product locking" I believe. And, in other times and shapes, has been ruled illegal. HP over the years has spread its share of FUD regarding printer warranties - "Use a non-HP cartridge, lose your warranty." And been slapped down. But saying almost anything but exactly that is okay. And new chip technology is just a way to remove the choice (and use the DMCA to prevent anyone circumventing it).
Lexmark is famous for selling two types of cartridges - one with no strings. The other, known as Prebate, requires that the purchaser agree that they will only dispose of the cartridge in the trash, or return it to Lexmark. And, this second Prebate cartridge is offered at a markedly cheaper cost. An EULA applied to beer.

I've certainly heard those arguments.
Go back a few years and anyone wearing a beeper was likely to be a drug dealer. Add an alternative skin color, and you could be sure they were. National news reports that cell phones (specifically the pre paid type) are used by organized crime and other unsavory elements because they make it very hard to track the offender?
You sound like the Constitution applies to you, but do you actually live in the United States?
I for one would be glad if teachers were busy teaching kids how to put on condoms. I'm more afraid of that lesson becoming illegal to teach than I am of pay-per-play legislation.
As a fellow Asheron's player, I have to argue. I played Everquest (Father, forgive me), and they do have truer swimming than I've seen anywhere else. Motion in 3 dimensions, with the requisite animations. Altered physics of speed and resistance. Magic changes, if I recall. At least one large underwater dungeon. The pathing algorithims are lacking, but they have massive problems with that sort of thing all through Everquest anyway.
Asheron's Call has walking through shallow water. I want Everquest style swimming at the very least, just in a good game.
From what I've seen of Neverwinter, it's still more a 3rd person view, despite using a 3D engine. I don't know that comparing the feel of First Person to Third Person games is fair.
Not me doing that talking. I just jumped in to this thread.
:)
On a lighter note:

Nannys.
To my way of looking at it:

What sort of a comment is that? ...!...
(I'm a US Citizen for what it's worth.)
I agree with you on a point or two. GWB is unlikely to get strung up. I think that's just a comparison that the US shows poorly in.
Most likely, he'll be remembered for the details of his election, unless even more horrible things happen in the future. (Homeland Security?)
All in all, I don't like the idea that you accumulated karma enough to post at base 2. I have to deal with it, but I don't have to like it.

"Steal this idea, amazon"
If you think about Amazon's patent holdings, this looks very amusing.

Erm, that'd be "Queen Mary"land, not "Mary, Mother of God"land. Charles I's wife, not Joseph's.

Because corporations are legal people. If you had $40 Billion in liquid assets, you'd have a shot at some of the same rights Big Business does.
Germany can't jump queue. Puerto Rico and Greater Canada (lacking Quebec, of course) are in line already.

You may be able to do what you want with your printer.
But *I* can't manufacture anything that gives you a choice if it violates patents(the shape of ink cartridge) or copyrights(the code in a chip).
