as off topic as the original poster, but this guy seems to be more of a true innovator than a crony... he donated 200 million pounds to genetic research in crop disease resistance and is constantly funding both applied and pure science. Just the kind of person i would want as a science/technology minister.

Sorry to tell you this but real scientists in the real world usually dont base a whole lot of their research on hollywood movies, especially ones with obvious agendas such as this one. To be honest this is the type of movie anyone with any understanding of the scientific method finds extremely annoying as suddenly everyone walking around is an "expert" on global warming because they saw this movie. Just because you saw it on TV doesnt make it true.
Heck, i didnt even have to google it, apparently Tiger Direct buys ads from OSDL because thats what i got for a banner for this page... wierd, but not as annoying as the thinkgeek ads for items that arent in stock, EVER (ie. the swedish firesteel...), reminds me of that southpark episode where cartman buys a themepark and then doesnt let anyone in so it becomes super popular
Unfortunately you'll never know the long term effects of anything until its been out in the the environment for the long term... it sounds like a great idea until you realize this sort of protectionism results in a HUGE slowdown in research. Look at drug companies... while i agree the whole cox-2 deal might be a little shady, they almost have to do that now, with the HUGE amount of research that must go into every drug, and even with all that research they can be sued senseless if some person with a rare allele dies. the development cycle/cost have resulted in almost no new "wonderdrugs" being introduced into the market in the last 10 years... and without those blockbusters the money going into the company declines, research declines, etc... lawsuits go up becaue 1 person out of a million had an adverse reaction, and the end result is the drug companies are on the brink of collapse.
Quite frankly you need to read up a bit before you start talking about protecting the environment. Do you realize that this nanotechnology could represent the great chance for usuable solar energy? (~70% effeciency with IBSC as opposed to the 12% or so we get today). And that these nanoparticles also may be used to clean up chemical waste/spills/etc as they can basically isolate the pollutant inside a carbon cage. Or that nanotechnology can provide insulation that is 39X more effective than current ones? (read aerogels) but hey, we should ensure that its basically impossible to do basic research on nanoparticles just in case a theoretical problem may exist, and even if a danger did exist well hey, maybe the risk is worth it? You're probably one of those people who thinks asbestos is one of the most dangerous chemicals out there and should be banned everywhere... read up on it, its not that dangerous if you use the right form of it (the kind that can dissolve in the human body and be eliminated, unlike current fiberglass insulation which can never be degraded). Read the skeptical evironmentalist once maybe too, show you how "bad" our world really is... let the left wing modding begin
You also have to remember that our basic needs arent so far from the bacteria/virii/etc that we are fighting (or hosting) as we came from a common ancestor (no creation vs. evolution debate please). As such any microbes from a distant planet would not have said common ancestor and would most likely have different needs/enzymes/etc. and would probably not pose any threat to us. Of course the theory of space spores (bacterial spores ejected into space by meteors, dont laugh its probably true.) could mean these bugs might have a chance at totally decimating us, or our immune system will recognize them instantly and destroy them before they have a chance to do any damage. But overall the whole foreign microbe plague (and war of worlds deal too) is very highly unlikely
Because configuring a MB for 2 processors is going to be a lot more complicated than the switching frequency model they use now (ie. Athlon XP-M and Pentium M chips). This method is a lot less complex than attempting to use 2 processors, one for high load and one for low load. (imagine trying to determine what's considered high load? after all web browsing actually takes a fairly high CPU while rendering some pages, especially with the more complex XML and (ick) flash pages that are out there). I'm typing this on a Athlon XP-M laptop right now and it actually stays quite cool until the CPU load goes above a certain point and it jumps fromm 533Mhz to 1.74GHz, at which point if its sustained it almost gets uncomfortable for laptop use.
Because the ISS and the Hubble are at 2 completely different orbits and different speeds. Matching the two would cost an enormous amount (in satellite terms) amount of fuel, and would be potentially extremely dangerous (ever see that MST3K episode where they ding the hubble?) so unfortunately this idea is completely out of the question.
What evidence do you have of this? MPEG-4 sure isn't backwards compatible. AAC/WMA isn't backwards compatible, yet all of them are catching on.
Those are catching on because they either offer a true advantage (MPEG-4 is needed for new high definition programming, and with HDTV finally taking off and technology such as HD-DVD coming out) or are an integeral part of a market leader, thus forcing their adoption (Ipod for AAC, and microsoft for WMA) However how many applications can really take advantage of 5.1 MP3s? with the space of HD DVD and Blu-ray, etc DTS and such is good enough, and while i can see it having a use in say computer games, and even video games, its not likely to be adopted by the masses who use mp3, which is to say those people who want a portable audio player.
Once again, MP3 does what most people want it to do, and as such all the MP3 devices out there are good enough for the general public. Plus if its not backwards compatible it wont be adopted. Just accept it already. Even though i love.ogg, i dont think its ever going to take over the market in the near future, heck even sony's dropping its non-support of MP3, not just using aatrac or whatever anymore
Actually you'll notice the gall bladder empties into the deudenum, the cavity right past the stomach. It has nothing to do with stomach alkalinity which i might note is a term used for the buffering capacity of a system to remain at ~ph 7 by neutralizing acids, and as the stomach tends to remain at ~ph2-2.5 it is not an alkaline environment. I really hope no one emails you for info because you have 0 idea what you are talking about. And yes, the gallbladder is an important organ used to produce bile which allows the uptake of various sterols and such, but you can live without it. Many people have thier gallbladders removed every year and you dont see them falling over dead.
I feel so sorry for those researchers, stuck at 20Gb/s... honestly, i know terabyte databases arent that uncommon among researchers (or that common) but honestly how much of a difference is 20Gb/s to 10Gb/s, you might save half the time but to be honest when calculations can take days/weeks this transfer rate isnt going to make a huge difference... (now in my basement that might be a different story...)
How is mirroring the audiofile that is the topic of the story, and not the rest of the blog (which has nothing to do with it?) honestly, if i hadnt put that anti-bush comment in there it'd be at +5 informative, thanks slashdot, i'll remember in the future how one is thanked for giving away bandwidth...
I normally wouldnt reply to a troll like this, but honestly, i saw this whole story as an attempt to get an anti-bush site viewed (ie. why not just link to the mp3 directly rather than to all the bush hating) so i put up a mirror for everyone and posted just the mp3 (i wouldnt mirror the rest of the junk as it had nothing to do with the story). Funny how it went from +5 informative to 1 overrated so fast, and this idiot gets moderated interesting... he didnt read that i'm not canadian, that i dont really care between Bush or Kerry, and just repeats teh same drivel heard over and over again... boo to you slashdot moderators, i'm really disappointed in you...
Hey, i prefer to read things that might be interesting to me, sans all the typical he did this, he did that political garbage. I'd have said the same thing if it was Anti-Kerry garbage... And just for interests sake i'm Canadian and i'd prefer Bush in office over Kerry, even though neither REALLY appeals to me...
Why feel sorry for him when he sues the pants off of google for stealing his trademarked name? (actually i hope he doesnt and they can come to an amniable agreement, but i can see lawyers with dollar signs flashing before thier eyes) Of course google probably has a closet full of ravenous lawyers to prevent this sort of thing from happening, unless they pull a microsoft and just buy the guy out for the name:)
At least they manufactured these batteries using the improved Li-ion technology, if it was the older style it wouldnt just overheat, it'd most likely start a runaway reaction that would end in quite toasted laptops. I think it was 150 Degrees F or so that this would start at, i know i heard of several cell phones left in hot cars that did this, and at least 1 nokia that burnt up while charging.
Yes, it is very nice looking, but how does it improve my interactions with the computer? The whole tilted window thing looks good but i dont think it'll be a huge bonus when it comes time to actually use it... I'd rather use those CPU cycles for something worthwhile i think...
Actually the concept of a large influx of cold water into the ocean altering the major currents is quite possible, at least in theory, but as a theory it must as always be taken with a grain of salt. (who's to say that such current changes dont occur every couple thousand years for various reasons? we just dont have enough data) But its no reason to start moving to the higher places on Earth anytime soon.
Seriously, who is going to take a company that prides itself on being a Proffesional Open Sourse Company.... have to wonder what marketing genious came up with that one...
Seriously, how much information can be in 10 letters? not to mention this is only 250 years old and the grail went missing over 1000 years ago... sounds like they got punk'd

hehe, i'm remedial... next time i need to read a bit closer :)

For a mirror of the mp3, sans all the anti-bush garbage, go http://www.blurr.net/mirror/powell-stern-2004-10-2 6.mp3Here.
go to http://bugmenot.com/ to avoid the whole having to register deal... I'd post a google link but it doesnt want to give me one for some reason

Funny how a couple hundred million can make someone change their minds :)
On the otherside its all just rumors until the cameras start rolling....
