    Bah! Back in my day we made our robots out of Lego. They didn't move or have motors. We made them move and made funny sounds for them. And we were lucky to have them! You kids and your motorized robots. Bloody luxury!

    Same thing happened to us in Los Angeles a few years ago but with water. During a drought the Department of Water and Power asked us to conserve water. We did such a good job that they raised our water rates to make up for their lost income. Sigh.

    Cringely wrote an article along the same line over two years ago, during the California energy "crisis". His idea is to cache energy generated at night into cells stored at people's houses for use during peak demand in the daytime.

    Sorry but I drank plenty of water when I tried creatine years ago and my calves cramped up. Stopped the creatine, cramps when away. These weren't simple, "Ooh, a cramp. Gotta stretch it out. Ah, better" cramps. These were "last all day, not acute but a dull ache" cramps. Not worth it for me.

    One could argue that the reason expert programmers are hired is so that they will "write expert level code".

    Perl 5's OO model is really, really painful.

    On the other hand, I adore it. I find it intuitive, it does just what I want it to do, and gets out of the way when I need it to. Like I tell my children, everybody is differrent.

    It's not just the cost of the software itself. If they can keep themselves a *nix-only shop, they don't have to have a separate gang to support Windows boxen.

    Jeebus, we're talking about on-the-fly playlists! Because you can't rank your Linkin Park songs as 5-stars with your iPod, Apple is suddenly shitty? Despite that fact that you can now play AAC files for a $0 upgrade. Yeah, life is pretty unfair...

    I don't think Apple should update indefinitely, but if you give a customer a little more than they expected (at minimal expense to Apple) it builds trust

    Be fair. On-the-fly playlists would be nice but it's hardly a must-have. Upgrading my old 5GB iPod to be able to play AAC files is a very big deal and I am thrilled that I can play them without buying a new player or paying for an update. It sounds like Apple is wisely allocating their resources. That's just good business. Floundering, indeed!

    While Pixar's rendering techniques are *good*, they aren't necessarily cutting edge when it comes to technology. Blue Sky uses raytracing for their images.

    Yeah and Ice Age looked like crap, proving, once again, that's it's not about the technology.

    Agreed. It's not going to happen this year or the next or even the next but it's going to happen. I don't know what the answer is for me yet but my wife and I are keeping an eye out.
