I agree, but this isn't about linking. This is about google copying content to their own server and redistributing it.

I almost suspect that there is no Michael P. O'Connor.

I was particularly amused by his "spread sheet to compare 3 of the candidates, Michael Peroutka, GW Bush, and just to be fair John Kerry." at http://www.mikeoconnor.net/blog/?postid=181. Hmmmm.. I wonder who will win?

You are right about the phrase "indie band". I should not have used that. What I was trying to communicate was about the mindset of many of the fans, not the band. As an aside, I have absolutely against Radiohead. I haven't heard all their albums, but I like what I've heard. Anyway, I was trying communicate that Radiohead seems to have a large following of fans who like them, at least in part, because "no one's ever heard of them", which is clearly not true, regardless of how they've done in the charts.

I did not convey this accurately in my post, so thanks for pointing that out.

  19. Re:The long tail is already here on The Long Tail · · Score: 1

It's Wilco. It's Radiohead. It's the Roots. It's thousands of artists you've never heard of and likely never will.

Get off your ego trip. "You've never heard of"? Give me a break. If I didn't have the rest of your post for context, I'd assume you were a troll. A very prominent local music store that I pass several times a week has had massive displays featuring both Radiohead and Wilco, and never once for Britney or N-Sync, or any of their ilk for that matter. You're not nearly as far ahead of the curve as you seem to believe you are.

Furthermore, if you're trying to give examples of bands without raving fanboys, Radiohead is definitely not a good example. Radiohead is the poster "indie band". Some Radiohead fans seem nearly as bad as the screaming masses pictured on TRL. "OMG!! Thom York!!!!! He's so awesome!!!@#!".

People will never stop making music, even if they have to completely subsidize it themselves. Well, some people might stop, especially those that are exclusively in it for the money. Everyone else might slow down, but there are many true fans of music for it to disappear. MTV and radio might go away in some extreme case, but I guess I don't see that as a bad thing. I have sunk probably close to $10k into being a musician. (the curious can hear a recent track at http://www.tomtheisen.com/Radiant.mp3)

I'm not planning on quitting my day job, nor am I quitting music. It's already very difficult to make money, much less a living off music, but there are certainly no shortage of musicians. Many of them play music for their own satisfaction.

I'm not saying people should pirate music, since high quality recording and mastering can definitely be expensive. But pirating will never cause musicians to cease playing. That's like saying people would stop playing video games if the big tournaments stopped offering cash prizes. Most people don't make money on it to begin with.

It's already been stated by another poster, but 30 degrees is not a "small hill". It is a gargantuan monstrosity of a hill. I have seen precious few paved roads in my life at this incline. This would be a 50% grade, whereas most cyclists would consider a comparatively "tame" 20% grade to be pretty brutal. If any battery powered vehicle can carry a human up this sort of incline for any significant distance at any speed > 0, I would consider that a major achievement.
