Nowadays when we’re at the point that even a casual investigation by a grade school student can locate definitive evidence that the earth is round... it takes a special breed of delusional imbecile to hold onto the belief that the earth is flat.
This is in the news because California’s so big - but it’s a not-uncommon dream of rural folk in many states.
Here in Washington state, new ideas to split the rural east from the more urbanized west comes up every 5-10 years. What’s funny is it’s not always the same people... sometimes it’s Ellensburg farmers sick of policies dictated by Seattle-dwelling communists; while other times it’s Seattle sophisticates, tired of subsidizing those backwards, progress-hating country bumpkins.
I doubt this California plan is the first time it’s ever come up in their state, either.
Last time I heard a model talking about climate change, it was Kylie Jenner - and she's mainly concerned at what global warming might do to her hair and skin.
I work with a few people who swear Slack boosts their productivity significantly. But whenever I'm in their office and they look away due to a Slack message, it's never a work thing - it's their husband or some friend telling them something non-work-related.
Looking back a few years, I noticed my own productivity went up significantly after I started ignoring my then-boss's directive to stay keep a group chat window open all the time.
Does anyone here have actual evidence - even a specific anecdote - that using Slack or another chat program helps them work better? Excepting those of you whose job it is to do online tech support, of course...
Here’s the problem I have with this whole story. If the reason Apple provided explained the situation 100%, then we should have been hearing reports of older iPhones suddenly crashing at ~30% battery charge for years. But we didn’t... the issue only started rearing it’s head after iOS 10.x came around.
So why didn’t older iPhones have this problem with iOS 9, or 8, or earlier?
I think you are correct. But I must admit that, with me, there's an additional aspect to this.
My positions on various issues range all over the political spectrum, so I can find usually find something to disagree with most people on if I want to look for it. And I must admit at times I can get in a mood where I'd rather argue with someone about the stuff we disagree on than to talk about the things we agree on - which certainly feeds into the "conservatives think I'm liberal, while liberals think I'm conservative" perspective.
As I've gotten older, I've learned to tamp down on that side of me somewhat... "somewhat" being the operative term!
The one thing that Facebook (and Twitter) allowed for, was for lots of conservatives to realize there are lots of conservatives.
I'm not a conservative, but I know (and have known) a lot of conservatives - and I'm a lot older than Facebook and even the World Wide Web. I was in college when Reagan got elected.
Pretty much every conservative I've known has assumed that I was the token liberal* in their circle and that I was part of a tiny minority - that the vast majority of Americans were like them and not like me. So this idea that somehow conservatives have until recently thought they were isolated and a minority really doesn't fit with what i've observed in the real world over the past 50+ years.
* Funnily enough, I have several rather liberal friends who think I'm really conservative. In 1980 I voted for Anderson, so both sides hated me.
You think either McConnell or Ryan have seen a W-2 in person? All these guys employ other guys who deal with dirty little stuff like W-2s and tell them what laws need to be changed to make them even more millions.
(actually, I should have said "needed to be changed" - they just gave themselves a huge payout a few weeks ago)
Not to mention that, for some bizarre reason, Apple chose to go with Lightning connectors for charging the latest versions of its wireless keyboard, mouse, and trackpad!
“The James Webb Space Telescope has emerged from the freezer” is one of the worst secret recognition codes I’ve heard in a long time. People are going to notice that one!
I bought the refreshed version with the original curvy form factor (and the port access flap). It was the first laptop I ever had with a solid-state drive... and taught me never to buy a laptop without one, ever again.
But much as I loved that one, I prefer this 2015 13" MacBook Pro - it's probably the best laptop Apple's ever made (and, unfortunately, will ever make). It's only 1/2 pound heavier than my Air was, and it's got lots of ports, a better screen, and a much better processor.
if the problem didn’t arise due to the end-user (e.g. password reuse from some other compromised sites), a OnePlus server compromise seems more likely than data being intercepted in transit. Although I guess you could call that “intercepted data” too, in a manner of speaking.
I grew up in the 60s and 70s. I remember some of the cold war films they showed us in school. According to them:
Stay indoors. If you’re close enough to the blast, you’re probably dead anyway (that was mostly just implied). For many more people, though, fallout is going to be the main worry - so stay inside. And even if you still have running water... you probably shouldn’t drink it. Use what’s already in the back of the toilet and in your hot water heater.
Of course nowadays, post 9/11, most reservoirs are supposedly covered - so I have no idea if that’s as important.
In any case, water is probably going to be the main short term issue. If you have some pre-blast warning, filling up as many containers as possible with water is a good idea.

Here’s to you, Mike Hughes!
But I know lots of other people who are the exact opposite.
Forums are easier to moderate, though, which appeals to manager types.

Does this mean the James Webb Space Telescope is going back into the freezer?
The summary was wrong here (writer didn't understand how rounding works)
Dammit, Jim - I’m a Writer, not a Mathematician!

Seriously? On what grounds should a game cheater get thrown into jail... are they stealing your money or something?
I can understand why it would be irritating - but let's have some perspective here.
I’m sure web pages which are slowed down because they include lots of Google ad content will not be penalized...

Seriously, Apple - WTF?

I never read an article suggesting doing such a thing in Nature.
It was in Nature Letters, which aren't as rigorously peer reviewed.
There's no way I most resemble Edvard Munch's The Scream .

He put BASIL in the RATATOUILLE?
I don't need to be psychic to work out where you're from...
Now, now - Redmond's schools are better than that.
Maybe Barcelona and Munich could just meet up and swap all their computers!
Is this group really a "pop sensation" once you get away from the virtual pages of Engadget?
