You could also look into getting a HOTAS Cougar from Thrustmaster. They fit the bill perfectly for the Falcon sim family, having been used once in the F16s heydays to train real pilots.

They cost a dime or two, but sometimes you see them at a discount in large electronics stores because these are non-ff devices, so they tend to sit on the shelves like lead in retail stores. Being made mostly from metal parts, you'll never touch another plasticky stick after you've made the "cougar" experience ;-)

The Amiga had "kickstart" in its ROMs (consisting mostly of libraries like exec, intution, graphics.library and so on), but in order to make the machine usable and get to see more than an animation of a hand inserting a floppy into a disk drive, you still had to boot off floppies or a hard disk to get to your workbench screen. Calling the kickstart rom's an operating system is taking things a bit too far IMHO.

Not a pro bodyguard, but I've found martial arts to create an excellent balance between work and recuperation / time off the job.

Anyone using martial arts or knowledge thereof to justify bragging rights hasn't understood the underlying philosophical concept which is "the best fight is the one that's never fought". Most martial arts (especially of eastern origin) have strong ties to philosphy like Taoism, Zen Bhuddism or even religion.

My guess is the author used his knowledge of martial arts in a humorous context more than anything else.

As for pgp signing, you might want to check out the firegpg plugin for firefox if that happens to be your browser of choice.

I too switched to gmail, after 15 years of using a console only client (first elm, then some pine, followed by mutt). I think my biggest arguments in its favour are the ability to access your email from anywhere, and of course the advanced search and labelling features gmail offers.

The only downside left for me now that google has apparently implemented imap access is the fact that it's impossible to display or compose messages in a fixed with font without using HTML email.

I have no idea why gmail seems unable to do that as it works ok in google groups, but it's only a minor gripe left with an otherwise excellent webmail system.

Maybe it's not an explanation why morals exist, but surely their existence is advantageous to the survival probability of a group of people supporting each other.

When you say "morality isn't only about people around you", that may be true, but that's not what I had in mind when I made my comment.

  18. Re:Nice... on Facebook Exposes Advertisers To Hate Speech · · Score: 1

I have to disagree. Your argument is only valid if you're able to support yourself during your entire lifetime without a group of people caring for and about you in times of sickness or other calamities.

The behaviour you outline above is pretty anti-social, and it's a sure bet it wouldn't be tolerated for very long by the tribe you were born into, possibly leading to instant gene-pool removal of yourself (or, at least, exclusion / expulsion from the tribe whose members you were abusing).

So I guess common sense does indeed dictate at least a fundamental adherence to basic principles that you'd call "moral", as it secures your survival within a group of people that'll support you in the long run.

  20. Re:Benefit or detriment? on Why We Need to Expand into Space · · Score: 2, Informative

Nothing wrong with expanding, but avoid exponential growth at all costs.

As Daniel Quinn has pointed out in his excellent novel "Ishmael", growing as a species is fine and dandy as long as you don't wage war on your surroundings.

Totalitarian agriculture (that's the term he uses for our way of life as a global culture, being totally dependent on the massive surplusses our food production yields) is the fire burning beneath our cultural cauldron, causing us to overrun the planet, its resources and most other species sharing it with us.

It's obvious this way of life is not sustainable in the long run by *any* ecosystem, be it planet earth or even the universe itself, as it results in a massive population growth (you first need massive food production surplusses in order to start and maintain exponential growth), so I'd suggest solving this problem first before we take it with us into space as a cultural meme. The solution could be to manage (and limit!) our food production in a meaningful manner to stop this exponential population growth.

Humanity is not exempt from ecological laws and causalities, even if our culture teaches us otherwise ("pinnacle of creation", anyone? ;-)

Check www.ishmael.org if you'd like to find out more about Dan's excellent books.

I think one of the contributing factors to be considered is that he's rather well off financially, won't have to work another single day in his life again and is basically free to do as he damn well pleases. I think in such circumstances, quite a few older people would be able to finish their studies, especially in a field that has become a life-long passion (which is rather the norm with astronomers than an exception). Kudos for Brian May for pulling this one off though, it's hard work even *with* a lot of passion involved.
