  1. > On the other hand, saying "well this may be a Good Movie by the standards of the non-trekkie unwashed masses

I don't think that was the point of the original comment.
For instance Star Trek the Motion Picture is a really good "Trek movie" but a pretty bad "movie".

It's just that the action movies of JJ are so divorced from the Trek mythos that they don't scratch the Trek itch.

  2. This isn't tracking your GPS location, camera or anything like that.
It's an app tracking specifically how you use that single app. Short of never enabling your network there's nothing you can do about that.
Though in it's basic form it's just harmless developers wanting to know what features are popular, bug tracking etc.

But yeah, the more over the top ones, such as the apparent ability to detect other mobile phones with sound, presumably is linked up to your microphones permissions.

Propaganda isn't the same things as "lie".

Nearly all of the adverts were subjective in their very nature or an appeal to the readers opinions. See https://www.theverge.com/2017/... for some examples.
And even if they were about objective facts, if a foreign power secretly spent a lot of money to endorse one candidate in my country's elections I'd still be worried.

  5. It didn't take screenshots when not running.
But the app had iOS's permission to do it.

Apple vetted the code to make sure they didn't.

As other's have said, this whole thing seems shady and unpleasant, but it doesn't look like this privilege was abused (though I'd rather they never had it in the first place).

I wonder if the un-capped versus will in anyway reflect the current game strategies or just be its complete own kind of meta.

Anything that does splash damage would be less useful if your opponent can split perfectly every time without fail.

Not really the best counter argument - though obviously there needs to be a lot of monitoring at each stage of handling the vote, just like there has to be that during more traditional voting.

  8. Re:Good grief, NO, and let's move on... on Do Kill Switches Deter Cellphone Theft? (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 2

The kill switch was first widely implemented by Apple on their own phones prior to any law,
There were some reported vunerabiities found in 2014, which were since patched and I haven't heard of any exploits since.

Granted politicians have a habit of passing laws without any understanding of technology or implementation, but this was already a proven solution when the law was passed.
Maybe there are some underground hacks, but I don't think they'll be easily available to the kind of people who feel they have to steal smart phones for some cash. To your point, why *wouldn't* thieves give a shit about it? When nobody wants to buy a stolen phone because they know it wont work they'll get the message. Yeah you can still sell it for parts or sell to unsuspecting people but that's a lower incentive.

Here's a bunch of older stories claiming that the iPhone kill switch lowered thefts
    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ip...
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sci...
    https://www.theguardian.com/te...
    http://www.businessinsider.com...

As others have said, the overall reduction in phone thefts are probably due largely to do with the greater availability of phones, but let's not all of us just jump on the cynical bandwagon and suggest every idea ever is stupid.

  10. This is happening to me on Ask Slashdot: Someone Else Is Using My Email Address · · Score: 1

So there are two people doing this, but primarily one. I've learn that he:

Is 48, single, looking "for a bad girl" in Oklahoma. (note: I'm Australian so I guess our countries are even now)
Looking for foreclosed properties to buy.
Is in trouble with the IRS.
Crashed his car, wrote it off off, and was done for DUI.

It was sad actually, started off with just hiring romantic comedies from a redbox, then dating sites, then a brothel news letter. Lastly he booked a hotel room for two, then cancelled it a few hours later. My poor namesake isn't doing so well.

At any rate, whenever one of his lawyers emails me I tell them they've got the wrong address and that the guy really needs to learn what his email is. I've been given share links to presumably sensitive dropbox accounts on multiple occasions that I left alone.

On the upside, it's really easy to tell if it's for him. Gmail lets you have optional dots in your email address, e.g. first.last@gmail.com works the same as fistlast@gmail.com. I've always used first.last so whenever I see an email for firstlast I know it wasn't me. So might be a little late for you now but you could try migrating over new accounts to a dotted version.
