so I just started new job a couple of months ago. I was sitting in my managers office when some guy walked by. "That guy is a perl god" says my manager and proceeds to tell me about why we hired him.
It seems at his last job he would spend his extra time writing super complex perl scripts. He would write a script called "bill.pl" (or whatever the other employee's name was) that would do everything that bill did for a job. Then they would fire bill and he would work on "mark.pl" or similar.
I was at a talk recently where they started talking up Halo2 numbers. Biggest opening weekend in entertainment history, etc.... $200 million in sales...blah blah blah
After expounding on how great Halo2 did, he continued on w/ " To put things in perspective though, windows does that every 2 days."
They make themselves look like idiots but they make this guys life hell while they are doing it. The sad part is, it may not effect their business (lusers won't know about this) but the cost of a this lawsuit will haunt him for a long time.
not to mention the chilling precedent. I especially like this quote "If independent researchers are not allowed to freely publish their findings about security software then users will be only have "marketing press releases" to assess the quality of the software. "Unfortunately, it seems that we are heading this way in France and maybe in Europe,"
I didn't mean to coverup the "wow it would be cool to be on Mars" factor. that is definitely there. Exploration has driven man for that last 10000 years and I see no reason to stop now.
Neither do I mean to put all the focus on some killer asteroid. The fact is, though, as long as we are only on one rock, a single event can exterminate humanity. If we are on two, or more, we have a backup. Of course, a single event could still wipe out two neighboring planets so we can't just rest on our laurels when we get to mars.
War isn't the thing that I believe will kill off the human race. In all but the worst wars, I would assume a pocket of humanity would survive.
The real danger is from asteroids (like the one recently that passed w/i satellite range but we didn't see it until it had passed) or drastic climate changes (ala worst case global warming). These type of _natural_ disasters can be far worse than anything we can dream up.
It is as simple as, you never keep your backups on in the same place as your data.
Besides, we might be able to do it. What is a better use for our resources? More war?
So we should ban it b/c it allows privacy? Allowing privacy encourages child porn? Bullshit. Just because privacy scares you, don't hide behind "Won't somebody please think of the children" crap.
If google can get at info in encyrpted word docs w/o the password, it sounds like there is unencrypted access to teh encrypted file through some sort of API. Does anybody know anything about this? I have a file that my brute force methods failed against and I have lost the password.
While I do believe that we are heading that way, it is a far stretch to say we are seeing the last dying gasps right now. Some 95% of americans still have television sets and a good portion of my aquaintances (under 25 included) are simply not ready to go this route.
I would say we are just see that initial skin discoloration that will eventually turn into the cancer that kills it.
The more basic question is when does life start? When Johnny thinks about shtupping Susie? When Johnny Jr. moves out of the house and get's married?
Well, probably somewhere in between those two. I would say when the fetus can sustain life on it's own.
As such, stopping vital resarch that could better the quality of life for humanity (and better humanity itself) b/c of some attachment to a lump of cells is wrong.
Besides, I don't think we are aborting babies for this. Correct me if I'm wrong but we are getting stems cells that are otherwise discarded in miscarriages and similar, right?
Having spent a good deal of time in airports around the world lately, I was generally happy to see teh tv's, I wish they were louder in many places. But even teh times when I didn't want to watch, there was no problem going to teh other side of the waiting area where there was no tv or tv noise (that could be heard over teh general din of the airport) If you don't like them, go to another part of the room.
I didn;t read the links and I don't know much about ants but, as you said, this is/.
I am sure there is some unnecessary bw use. As for the second though, if the application itself falls under fair use b/c there are some legal uses, just being a node on the network isn't enough for a lawsuit.
at this point, it would be alot faster to get a pair of accounts and mail a smaller (100mb) file back and forth to yourself w/ as many ccs as they let you do. attach each old message to the newest and you start doubling. you could fill it pretty quickly that way. I would assume this is done already. i could see somebody doing this in under an hour.
If the movie is based on special FX, explosions or cinematography I go to a nice theater w/ fancy screen, comfortable seats and good sound. Anything from Shrek to Bourne Identity to Hero (-- great movie) I will shell out the $10+/head to go. Other than that, I will wait for the DVD (and download the rip I almost never bother w/ cam versions anymore).
The movie going experience is especially good in certain films. I try to go close to opening night on the big films. The vibe is much more interested. I just saw Sean and the dead (or whatever). The movie was very tongue in cheek and the crowd was very into it. Great movie for an enthusiastic crowd.
OT I know but since we are talking about it. I have a map in MS streets and maps that I want to print really really big. I would like to export a pdf of size 200x160 or whatever that comes out to. I have tried w/ the full acrobat and w/ pdf reader and both croak when dealing w/ that size.
Anybody have a suggestion for one that can handle it?
OK, debate is what makes the world go round. I really don't understand your position, hence the debate, but I don't think any less of you for not having the same position as I.
Anyway, On the iraq/9/11 thing. I think that is a fine hair to split, the administration intimated connection for months. But for direct quotes how about Cheney describing Iraq as "the geographic base of the terrorists who have had us under assault for many years, but most especially on 9/11." From teh Washington Post (reposted here: http://www.truthout.org/docs_03/093003C.shtml)
Not all of the detainees at Gitmo were taken on teh battlefield. Some were taken from the US soil. From Washington Post " FBI agents apprehended Padilla, a former Chicago gang member and convert to Islam, at O'Hare International Airport in 2002 on suspicion he was planning a radiation-spreading "dirty bomb" attack. " The big problem here is that they are taking US citizens and classifying them a certain way to avoid due process of law. See this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/america s/2037749. stm This talks about another case of a US citizen arrested in chicago under suspicion of terrorism, not charged and then classified as an "enemy combatant"
as far as the patriot act, yes, that is a very different issue than gitmo (though both fairly serious liberties violations). The ACLU did the point by point better than I could: http://www.aclu.org/SafeandFree/SafeandFre e.cfm?ID =12263&c=206

Glad I didn't tell him my name. B)

I guess this depends on which market you are in for. I checked NY and seattle and saw nothing overtly interesting.

that was great! thx
they've just made themselves look petty and bad

I have seen at least 10 cases where pigeons have died
Do you have any numbers on how many rats have died? Or does having feathers make the difference among disease-ridden carion-eaters.
dude, it was a joke.
well, probably both.
But you are right on this issue.
sorry, couldn't resist.
Why do we care, 200 nano meters is what, a human hair?

(The Renault Vel Satis) is now the safest saloon in the executive-car segment.
Well no wonder. I thought we weren't supposed to mix saloons and driving.

That is not true. We had been doing bombing runs since the end of the 1st gulf war.
