You are wrong: If DRM is built into the hardware then the software is hostage to it.
It seems to me that Stallman is right on this and Linus et al need to revisit the coming state of DRM-enabled hardware because it increasingly looks like the darksiders are trying to make a hardware end-run around free software: The software will still be free but the hardware won't run free software -- only caged software will be allowed to operate.
GPL3 would prevent commercial exploitation of free software on non-free (DRM-ed) hardware.
This Slashdotter has been an Opera user on Slackware Linux since Opera first released for Linux in 2001 or so. It's small, fast and has a good feature set.
I do have the fox and sometimes even use it, but I much prefer Opera. It's not the the fox is bad, but that I'm happy with Opera.
Thanks to the Opera folks for supporting Linux with a great product.
"So everyone that runs from the cops should be shot and killed?"
If someone runs in such a manner as to threaten the health and safety of others then yes, kill 'em fast and sure.
"...we should just circumvent all the wastes involved with a criminal trial."
No one ever has the "right" to endanger others in such a manner as a vehicle driven recklessly at high speeds. In doing so, the perp is telling the society around them that he has no regard for lives or property. Such people deserve no regard other than what it takes to remove them as an immediate threat.
Why develop such a device when we already have 50 caliber machine guns and automatic grenade launchers and shoulder-launched anti-armor rockets?
Remember: If you are nice to such people then you will end up with more such people. The best approach is to take them out of the gene pool at the very first opportunity, so don't jail 'em, kill 'em!
There really is some merit to the Chinese method of "two strikes and you are dead" providing it isn't abused for political purposes. No point of keeping some whacko sociopath locked up at the cost of twenty grand a year, just whack 'em and be done with it. If they give you the opportunity on the first go 'round, well, take it -- that's what opportunity is all about.
To those who suggest rehabilitation, please reference the recividism rates in the U.S. Rehabilitation as a correctional concept is a huge failure and needs to be brought to a meeting with reality.
"Time" is movement over distance and I've never seen any science which suggests otherwise, although I've seen plenty of pseudo-science which has difficulty grasping the simple concept. It's just a word humans use as a shortcut so we don't have to say "movement over distance" a lot.
"Spacetime" is a reference to the same thing, movement over distance but infers larger distances and a delay in observation caused thereby (light can only go so fast, you know.)
So, in this regard, the author is correct: Time has a geometry, but only because "time" is a simple measure of space (distance between observable objects) and movement of those objects in that space and space is, by definition, geometric.
The author is also correct when he says time is relative, but also only because distance is relative to the point of origin of the measure and again, distance is space and objects in space are relative to one another.
I suspect his definition of what constitutes a "dimension" as well.
Overall, this guy is either making a rather large tongue-in-cheek joke or is seriously confused.
People have been using this same technique with Microsoft OS based computers for years now. Research suggests there is no direct linkage between techniques although they are almost identical in practice. Scientists not yet sure which came first: The roach or the rube.
How appropriate that a Microsoft "Get the Facts" ad should show up at the top of this particular page -- gotta love that Murphy guy when he works in your favor.
To the Microsoft Marketing folks: I'd trade you a fact for a clue but since you have neither facts nor clues I guess we won't be doing business any time soon.
Yeah,/. needs to watch these moderations more closely or the astroturfers will trash the site. Of course it could be too it's just an idiot who can't tell what's on topic and what's not.
Maybe moderation will fix this, maybe not. I wonder if/. has a means to prevent people from getting moderation points who abuse them? Would be a good idea.
It will solve the root of your problem. Every other solution offered here is a bandaid which will fall off shortly, will surely get infected, will probably leave scars and will cost a lot of time and money for a temporary "cure."
Oh yes, I almost forgot, the fee for the fix: Gratis.
I think you need to reference dictionary.com and look at the definition of the word "hero" as neither one of these two guys even comes close.
Heros are like Audi Murphy or Frodo Baggins. Perhaps you should apply the phrase "self-serving business men" instead.
I pity the fool who selects heros such as these (with thanks to Mr. T, who is something of a hero in his own right, see: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001558/bio )
"...the spyware makers live. Wouldn't that be useful ?"
Yes, but much more useful if they post a decent bounty and make collecting it as easy as using the local ATM. The downside is that spyware makers would be in short supply in about 72 hours. This could be defined as success.
Seriously though, the bandaid approach to computer security is never going to work. In my opinion, Microsoft is guilty of criminal neglect (amongst other even worse things) and should be prosecuted heavily. No one should be allowed to say "I'm not responsible" and then act irresponsibly, which is what Microsoft does with their EULA approach to responsibility and accountability. A couple of billion dollar fines and some real jail time (in a real prison) for the main players would let the industry know _right_now_ that they are responsible for their actions and no EULA can negate responsibility and accountability.
That this situation with Microsoft has been allowed to develop to this point is the most damning evidence that our governments are corrupt to the point of not serving their primary purpose -- the protection of society against those who would do it harm.
It's because just about everyone in the industry has or is about to find a way to make a buck off the horrid situation we're all in due to Microsoft's garbage OS: When people start dumping Microsoft products then the easy money is over and they have to start doing some real work again.
The flip side of this same coin: Some "terrorists" or other group decides that giving a small group of Darkside hackers some serious money is an option and then one day most of our business IT infrastructure gets hit in a big way. Very likely, this scenario, but no one wants to acknowledge the threat or the vulnerability because they're all focused on their spreadsheets.
About/. specifically, this site stopping being a Linux-mostly site about four years ago -- haven't you noticed the amount of Microsoft ads here? Sheesh.
But otherwise, here you have it folks, straight from the proverbial horse's mouth:
1. Ummm, Vista will fix that. 2. Bad security -- the user did it! 3. Ummm, Vista will fix that. 4. Windows updates! 5. Design better users... 6. Ummm, Vista will fix that. 7. Design better users... 8.
The only thing I see Microsoft "killing" in three years is Microsoft, what with all the horrible problems with their OS' and application's stability/security/licensing/cost problems.
Trying to change the subject and focus from their current mess to what they say is in the near future is absurd only if you buy into said change of subject; otherwise, it's quite comical.
It was bad enough when I saw the 7-up smiley dot painted on an orc's shield, but when I saw the green dragon with the "Fly United" logo tatooed on his butt and empty Cheetos bags in his lair I vowed the Mad Advertiser would meet a just end, and soon!
He's here somewhere and I'll find him and whack him good, I just hopes he gives decent xp and drops a bag of Cheetos and maybe a cold Coke. Tickets to the Bahamas would be a very good drop, but I'd not fly there on the back of a cranky dragon.
Let me esplain: Doozy is a bit like floozy, cept that floozy makes you oozy while doozy makes you woozy. And if you don like this, you much too choosey.
Thanks to Fezzik and Ingo from "The Princess Bride" movie for such excellent inspiration.
Yeah, have to agree: It's terribly low-tech but works really good -- no path means no traffic. I do something similar with a couple of routers, just unplug the ethernet cable to the outside router when not using the net, inside router still provides network for local devices. Both routers setup for DHCP and so within seconds of plugging in the cable, net is accessable again for all networked devices.
Don't use wireless either although all this eq is rigged for it, just really don't have a need for it currently. I do use firewalling and other tricks.
You are witnessing how new words are created, used and adopted into the English language, so shuddup and pay attention to the lesson. Just for your notes, there are no hard and fast rules for how new words are made in English: Whatever gets used, wins.
Do you or anyone at Microsoft really think you have any credibility on any level with anyone besides PHBs and fanbois or are you hoping that continued posturing in the face of reality will eventually pan out and all will be good again?
Seriously, do you guys live in a different dimension and only come over to this one to spew MS BS?

Excellent mod work. I really like the mods which make PCs look like something other than PCs but then that's one of those personal preference things.
Again, very nice work.

Another tinker tripping over the concept of time?

Transsexual
