    Look at Tomb Raider and Mortal Kombat. Both of these went from video games into the movie theaters.

    Can you do impact sports with one? Even running isn't recommended. For me, and many others, one of the biggest uses of a portal player is for running. While there isn't anything fantastic about the Gateway player it is in a different class than the ipod. Hard disk based players and flash based players shouldn't be compared on storage...

    Does anyone actually think this company isn't a POS? The developers did the work give them the damn PDA's. They were free and it will go a long way to fostering good will.

    Anyone know if MathCad is still around?

    I remember using it to write a few technical papers/proofs. The student edition was very affordable and it would format the equations and to the calculations which was nice.

    Just an idea....

    I have to [somewhat] disagree here.

    Usually the product that wasn't released within a market window fails. If your product is late out the door you don't stand a chance.

    At least well I work process is what everyone agrees we should be doing. We are never, NEVER, given the time to completely follow the process. If you try you will either be working 60+ hour weeks or laid off for missing schedule too many times.

    What I find funniest about our development process is that the people most adamant about putting things in place and documenting developement usually aren't having to do all the grunt work they are suggesting.

    I'm not sure how layoffs should be done but I know the way most American companies do it today isn't the solution. It does treat the ex-employees as if they were criminals. In my experience the ex-employees are escorted, in front of coworkers, to a small office. Given the news and any severence then given a swift kick out the door. I've even been in companies where they didn't let the employee pack their cube. Rather someone boxed it for them and shipped it...

    Very true.

    In my tax bracket I'm pretty sure I'm paying for more than I'm getting though. This is probably true for most of the Engineers/Programmers on here. We aren't the most underpaid bunch.

    Hmmm, let me see. Oh, ME! Yes me, the taxpayer. God I hate it when people act like the federal goverment is giving us something. We pay for our government, it doesn't pay us.

    What a novel concept. If it costs more to live in the sticks then the price of food goes up and I pay for it that way.

    But this isn't just going to the less fortunate. Why should the rural lifestyle be funded by others? If you want the peace and quiet of living in the sticks...fine. Just don't as me to pay for it.

    As for the "real" less fortunate, I'd much rather see this paid for from a general income tax. Just because I enjoy a fast connection doesn't mean I should be the one to pay for others. If its that important then all Americans should be "asked" to contribute.

    I think I agree with what your saying. I'd much rather see this money come out of a general income tax than from other broadband users.

    The whole idea of funding this with funds from broadband are offensive. It smacks a little to much of some sort of Robin Hood syndrome.

    In Linksys was forced to give out IP they don't wish to divulge it is a huge signal to other companies to steer clear of Linux.

    So I'm supposed to go out and buy a bunch of differenct cards, test my games, and return the ones I don't want?

    Consumers need a reliable way to know which cards to purchase. It may be that each tech site out there should come up with their own, original, game demos so many of these optimizations can't be done. But the fact still remains, consumers need a reliable way to know what to buy.

    Ok, I thought about this some more and the sphere or cylinder would have the opposite effect. But, I think the idea of using a 3d renderer is still sound.

    Basically build a custom lens in the program and view the image through that lens. The lens would straighten the lines....

    Not the most computationally efficient method but I wonder if you could do this with povray.

    Use the picture as an image map on a sphere or cylinder. Keep adjusting the frame and object size until the lines look straight. Make sure the object is self illuminating and you don't use external light sources...

    Hmmmm, seems like it might work....

    Why is it everytime good news about video games comes out the /. community thinks its just swell but when negative affects are proven everyone comes out with the "well I came out ok"?

    I know...a bit of a rhetorical question. Everyone is defensive of THEIR hobby and are secretly afraid they have been screwed up somehow. Come on, how much intelligence does it take to see that seeing very graphic, violent behavior day after day would desensitize you to that behavior? Yes, these types of lawsuits are crazy but parents should take the prevailing research and attitudes to heart and pay attention to what their kids are playing.
