I remember the internet way back when, yep the medium worked but it wasn't nearly as interesting as it is today. The reason the internet has taken off is because of its commercial uses.
I think Asheron's Call 2 is a good indication of what happens when you try and DUM things down too much. The game wasn't any fun and is pretty much a failure.
I didn't see any quotes in the articles mentioning the Opterons. Did you? The only comparison I saw was to Intel.
Personally I don't believe they didn't get a special deal. Not for a second.
The guy in charge may not have been a Mac zealot but you sure appear to be:). The G5 is a nice processor but lets keep religion and technical discussion separate.
Well by that logic we should all hail MS windows. Apple released the first versions of the gui to the marketplace but it was MS who really popularized it.
I know its an unpopular stance on/., but I really feel for the local brick and motar stores. They are the ones getting screwed.
All stores should be on equal footing. If taxes make people shop locally more often then the internet, or mail order for that matter, isn't a viable sales medium.
In an ideal world mail order, internet, and local items would be taxed equally. This should allow the overall tax rate to be lowered because more items are being taxed. Of course this would never happen but its nice to think about.
The implication of the "skip" quote is that you might now want to read this because of the opinions expressed within the article. Your right, they did link the article. Good for/. , I suppose actions speak louder than words but it was still a stupid thing to say.
Forewarning: The open source community is not portrayed in positive light so you might want to skip reading this
Does this statement strike anyone else as idiotic? If someone doesn't agree with "the community" we just ignore them? Talk about sticking your head in the sand.
People need to look at the total cost of ownership. Both Xbox and PS2 now have many "classic" games coming in under $30. After buying a few games the Nintendo could easily cost more than the PS2/Xbox if these games are in the new owners collection.
They have pissed people off but they have also educated ma and pa kettle. Too many times parents are ignorant of what the law is and how it applies to the internet world.
I agree teachers need a pay increase but I do want to point out a couple things
1) Teachers HOURLY wage should be considered. Not yearly. If you look at the hourly wage things aren't nearly as bad as some would make it out to be. I'm sure the teachers would love to be paid to take the summer off but lets be real.
2) The teachers are somewhat responsible for their situation. The whole idea of tenure and the teachers unions resistance to any sort of merit pay penalize all the good teachers. When teachers decide to be treated as a professional position instead of a blue collar one they will have much more luck getting better pay. As a benefit to all the students it will also be easier to get rid of the poor performers.
I agree except I really don't see a problem with having dual personalities as long as there is accountability.
If your online persona was persistent and your reputation followed you, not only in game but between games, people would be much more civil.
I know privacy advocates hate this kind of talk. Any discussion of putting in a trackable number/code in chip, for example, is scoffed at. While I realize how easy it would be to abuse such a system, there are many advantages.
Most larger tech companies I know have HR departments that rate universities. The top rated universities graduates have a much easier time than others. Recruiting is also targeted at the best rated schools.
I think this is even more prevalent with business degrees.
Now, that said I did get my Masters degree from NTU (National Technological University). NTU is a pretty neat program. NTU works with member university's and just uses classes they are already having. By doing this NTU can broadcast classes from some of the top professors in many different fields. There are big draw backs, such as the lack of interaction, but its not a bad program.
I love my Tivo! I can't imagine going back to the stone age of TV and having to watch on someone elses schedule.
That said, I also realize that they have to pay for the programming somehow. With Tivo like DVRs really taking off (I heard DirectTV is selling a on of Tivo based DVRs) it is putting the stations cash cows in jeopardy. Personally I'd much rather have some product placment in the show then have to pay more than I already do for programming.
I do agree that there will need to be some regulation on these placements to bring them in line with more conventional commercials.
The satellite network is a bit different than a mission to Mars. This has direct influence on various nations national security.
That aside, I for one, don't want to be in bed with countries that have radically different beliefs. How close should the US be to a country such as China who kills off newborns in the name of population control?
So what company do you work for? I need to know where not to apply.
This isn't the 1950's anymore. Most companies I know of allow engineers and programmers to work on real flextime. Its much harder to manage employees in this mode but it is also easier to keep happy employees. What matters is that the work is getting done, not when its getting done. For that matter it shouldn't matter how many hours your spending if your performing at or above average. The hours one is a bit of a two edged sword though.
I know at my company many of the top engineers (in title and performance) work at home a day or two a week.
Yes, the brain can definately have problems but I hope you'll agree the brain is in a different class than the liver.
Where does the medicating stop? If someone if smarter then everyone else then do you medicate them to bring them down to the average? If someone is a generally happy person do you medicate to bring them down? Yes, the brain is just a chemical machine but it is also who we are. If you argue that one side needs to be medicated to equilize them then the opposite is probably also true. This seems a little to Ayn Rand...
While I certainly don't agree with the original poster I do think there is some BS these days.
What people call "chemical imbalances" today used to be called personality. Nowdays if your depressed or overly happy its time to pull out the medication because you have a "chemical imbalance."
If someone is trying to jump off a building because they think they can fly I'll agree there is a problem but if someone is just a tad different let them be.
Your comparison of being a black person to being a member of the open source community is mildly offensive. Contrary to how many open source developers and advocates present themselves you are not born being an "open source". This is a choice you have made.
The open source community is just that, a community. What one person or sub-group does inside this community does reflect on the group as a whole. Instead of comparing it to a minority group you should be comparing it to a company or club. If one person in a company/organizaton does something of questionable ethics it does reflect on everyone else. It is therefore in that organizations best interest to police itself.
I believe the same is true for the open source community. By sticking to a set of values and admonishing those that don't the open source movement will gain more acceptance.
The fall of Sci Fi is because reality has set in. Everyone isn't going to have a flying car or personal transporter in the near future. We aren't going to have cities under the sea or on the moon.
I think anyone who has played AC or Everquest knows about video game addiction!

Ok, and your point is?

Frippery?
I wonder how much extra power this "frippery" is consuming? How much extra cooling would be needed and how much would it cost per year?
Well by that logic we should all hail MS windows. Apple released the first versions of the gui to the marketplace but it was MS who really popularized it.
What exactly did Apple pioneer in the online music area? Besides 0.99 that is?
:).
Reminds be of the whole windows gui argument. We all know it was Apple, not Xerox

So it went off the air...big deal. Maybe the little green men just left orbit....geesh.
LOL,
That list looks like a "which one doesn't belong" question. What the hells wrong with McDonald's anyway? Come on, I know you want a BigMac!

So where are the fighting games for a PC? If you port to the xbox why not take the next step?
Personally I don't own a console. I can't really justify it but I would be willing to purchase a figting game for the PC now and then.
The old excuse was lack of a controller but there are plenty of good ones on the market these days.
