I use megapath.net
they are hideously expensive ($79 a month for 144K IDSL). But they are just wonderful.
Firstoff, in chicago, they colocate their conenction at exodus.net's facility... so thats my regional gateway/POP... and Slashdot (also on exodus.net) is veery few hops away, adn very fast.
I also get amazing ping times. TO other local chicago Counter strike servers, I ping as low as 20ms. Yeah. 20, on IDSL.:-) Only reason I got IDSL is because I am 23,000 feet way from the CO.
I've had about 4 hours of downtime since april.. and Their customer service is phenoimenal, NO server restirctions, NO bandwidth restrictions.. and they hand out IP's like candy, if you're willing to shell out and extra $5 to $10 a month.
Yes, they are very expensive... all they offer is RADSL, and SDSL products.. and they target the "power" user.. but.. If you can bark up $100+ a month for the higheer speeds, you get what you pay for.. Amazing customer support, rock solid connections.. and latentcy that is sooo low that you'll weep with pleasure in Quake3.
Advantage: If I have the time and the Patience, I can mount this sucker on my RV, and get broadband in the middle of the damn Death Valley if I wish.:-)
(Yes, there's the whole aiming, etc to worry about.. But screw that, I'm patient)
Now don't tell my bosss I can get 768K per sec when I go vacationing... But he might not care.. esp since telnet will be lagged to fuck.

I seond this review... I've hooked up myself @IDSL speeds) and and 5 others to Megapath in the last 5 months, and the experience has been AMAZING.
They are top notch, kick-ass, etc. WE're talking low pings for your Quake3/Counterstrike/Tribes games, regional peering points into the net. (So if you live in chicago, then your data hits a chicago router first, not going out to SiLi Valley)
I've had ONE outage in 4 months on my own line.. It lasted 15 minutes. I called, and was on hold for aobut 30secs, adn they told me it was regional, it would be fixed asap.
Plus Megapath has the scret bonus of No contract. Thats right, other dsl provs. makes you sign up for one year, and charge you $200-$500 is you bail out early. Megapath is Month to month.. No early disconnect fees etc.
The only negative is that when you get their DSL service, you have to buy the router. But not from them! They will tell you whichi model to get, and you can go to Ebay/Shopper.com to buy it.

Sometime around mid 1995.. The internet really started rearing it's big ugly head to the *rest* of the world... I repsonded with a yawn.. I had a shell account since 1992.. Which lead to me meeting the future president of a ISP in Illinois... Grand plans, Low Cash, and my brain on overdrive menat I started werking.. for Less $ than I was making, and for more hours... But the plan was magnificent.. And the users hadn't gotten too stupid yet...
I almost got pigeonholed into being an onsite installer of internet software.. But after the desturction of the bosses mini-van (He should change his own damn oil, and not expect someone borrowing it to check the oil..Doh) I was moved back to Tech support/Jr Admin Wanker.
that's when the hell began, life took a turn further down, as I was exploited by the drooling, unwashed, PPP-ignorant masses.. I started to dred work... Luckily, I was moved to 3rd shift, where the masses were slightly less braindead, and the oppurtunities to play Quake were quite abundant..
But all good things to come to a fiery crashing end... Eventually life started to suck even on the magical late shifft, and I made it worse by coming in late for work, more than a few times.. And eventually, I was dropped... thankfully..
The moral is? 2 years of my life almost.. No stock options, less than $12 an hour, and I learned only how to verbally spar with morons on the phone... Phah.. Netslave? Perhaps... But now I make about 4 times that rate.. and it's only 3.5 years later...;-)
I never finished more than a year of college.. (I only regret it because I wanted to party more) and I have no certs aside from A+... So I guess the moral is.. Eventually you'l get a decent salary, adn a nice job, if you don't sweat the small crappy stuff... yeah, right.

I enjoy being a contactor... There's nothing like guranteed overtime @ double my Rate to really make up for having t be onsite for more than 40 hours a week.
I've done both slary, and Contract (1099, and W2) and I'll always like contracting more.. Usually less tress, more rewarding, and with my current contracting company, training is free.. So now I get get all of the sundry little resume fodder (CCNA, MSCE+I) done, and done for free.
The slight negatives are No Health Insurance, and no 401K... But those are negated for me, since I've always kept independant Health insurance, and Have had my own set of Stocks, IRA's and mutual funds.
I personally don't give a crap out Life insurance, because my only my cat survives me.. ;-)

This is wrong... The kid is essentially praised for his story, and then the administration turns on him, and puts him in Juvee Detention for it... I'm not one to advocate needless legal action, but he should at least threaten them witha alaw suit, if only to make them sweat about it... (an Eye for an Eye?;-)
Truthfully, there is nothing wrong with writing stories about killing people... Back in HS, (7 years ago) I had dyed blue hair, I wore black, listened to Metal/goth music, and I was skinny, and frail looking.. My NickName (Baptised on me form the Jocks) Was Faggy... And I would often spend ample study halls, carefully illustrating in my notebook, about what I wouldn't mind doing to them.. it usually involved electric cattle prods, chinese water torture, and sevral knives.;-)
But none of it was serious, and I wish no ill-will on them today... I get other gratification.. mostly from having dropped out of School, and now making Uber bucks... While the college bound jocks with the schlorships? They're working at Mcdonalds, and the local lumber yard.. and another was arrested for stealing a camera at Wal-Mart.
Once we can work past all of the security/paranoia issues associated with it, I tend to think that Internet voting is a great thing.
For the most part, I only vote on the yearly elections, and even then, I am loathe to wander down to the local polling place.. Why? Because I don't like to stand in line for 1/2 an hour, and have to deal with crazy little punch card forms.
Now.. If I could Internet vote.. and have notificiations of Elections emailed to me.. Then I could happily cast my cote during my lunch hour at work, or perhaps between my evening Quake3 Game.
It's all about conveinience And if we can consider the drooling masses that hey, this is safe/secure and convienient, then we've got a winner on our hands.
Truth be told... I never got terribly into the original series.. Oh, I've managed to see pretty much all of tehm, but for me the love started when i saw the first movie...
And I've been at every trek movie on opening day ever since... For me, the voyage home shall always remain my favourite.. tongue in cheek that it is.. saving the whales, and Kirk and Spock wandering about San Fran.. very cute.:-)
I also dug the TNG, and rabidly watched it from the 2nd season onward.. and I transferred my affection to DS9.. but It never "held" my interest.. Always on that dern space station...
As far as Voyager goes.. I never have been able to get into it.. The charectors seem forgetable, and it just doesn't grab me anymore.
Maybe we need to have the series killed off... Wait a few years (2002?) and have anoterh movie.. Slap Kirk, and Spock, and picard together, for something... Be it a last hurrah, or a transition to some new TV series (hint hint).
Whatever happens.. I don't want Trek to die... I hope they keep doing movies until I have kids, and they can then watch it, and muse about the cheesy old "Tng" series... Yeah..:-)
Philly... The city that Loves you Back? (Shudders) Thank the gods I got the hell out of there many years ago... ewwwww....
But back to the original topic... I think it's just another sign of another state trying to prove that they are "on top" of this whole internet thing. Out here In the Land of Lincoln (Illinois) We have some corridor of Industrail parks/offfices off of the Interstate nick named "the Silicon Prarie" (Yes, I gag everytime I hear that term)
Honestly, there are better ways to attract high tech firms to your state.. you don't need some corny-assed slogan/nickname.. (Or websites..:-)
While maybe the concept sounds good... I'm just afraid it will turn out to be some uber-campy mess... But then again, I tend to think that I have repressed bad memories about the dern cartoon.;-)
I'm also of the herd that beleives a Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance movie would be good... I mean why not use some of the uber-Matrix-effects on creating the charector Drizzt Do-Urden from the realms???;-)

Is there an EASY/Possible wat to migrate about 150+ Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Emailboxes/clients to A linux box running sendmail/Qmail?
Obviously.. There's a few Gotchas.. That I can spew out off hand: -Lost mail that is stored on teh Echnage server -Password/user verification.. How do I keep The same username/pass combo on the linux box synced with what's on the NT boxes/PDC -MS Exchange public Folders... Can I port/convert these over to Some other format/Program? Something like WWWThreads 3.0 would replace it just fine... But I would Lose all of the old Data, and I would run into more password verification problems... (How to Sync some public folder/message board system with the existing NT PDC/Boxen)
So... That's more than a few annoying problems to deal with, when considering to go from a Microsoft Exchange Server to a Sendmail or Qmail setup. Ach.
But the benfits are many... for one thing.. I don't think a Ppro-200 W/ 128megs of ram would CHOKE running Sendmail with 150 Mailboxes..

that's when the hell began, life took a turn further down, as I was exploited by the drooling, unwashed, PPP-ignorant masses..
Phah.. Netslave? Perhaps... But now I make about 4 times that rate.. and it's only 3.5 years later...

This is wrong... The kid is essentially praised for his story, and then the administration turns on him, and puts him in Juvee Detention for it... I'm not one to advocate needless legal action, but he should at least threaten them witha alaw suit, if only to make them sweat about it... (an Eye for an Eye?
Truthfully, there is nothing wrong with writing stories about killing people... Back in HS, (7 years ago) I had dyed blue hair, I wore black, listened to Metal/goth music, and I was skinny, and frail looking.. My NickName (Baptised on me form the Jocks) Was Faggy... And I would often spend ample study halls, carefully illustrating in my notebook, about what I wouldn't mind doing to them.. it usually involved electric cattle prods, chinese water torture, and sevral knives.
Yes, what goes around DOES come around!

:-)
:-)
And I've been at every trek movie on opening day ever since... For me, the voyage home shall always remain my favourite.. tongue in cheek that it is.. saving the whales, and Kirk and Spock wandering about San Fran.. very cute.
Yeah..

Philly... The city that Loves you Back?
:-)
(Shudders) Thank the gods I got the hell out of there many years ago... ewwwww....
But back to the original topic... I think it's just another sign of another state trying to prove that they are "on top" of this whole internet thing. Out here In the Land of Lincoln (Illinois) We have some corridor of Industrail parks/offfices off of the Interstate nick named "the Silicon Prarie" (Yes, I gag everytime I hear that term)
Honestly, there are better ways to attract high tech firms to your state.. you don't need some corny-assed slogan/nickname.. (Or websites..

I don't spell check, deal with it
While maybe the concept sounds good... I'm just afraid it will turn out to be some uber-campy mess... But then again, I tend to think that I have repressed bad memories about the dern cartoon.
I'm also of the herd that beleives a Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance movie would be good... I mean why not use some of the uber-Matrix-effects on creating the charector Drizzt Do-Urden from the realms???
Hrmmm Methinks we should have another Slashdot Poll... Does Anyone here still play AD&D or D7D alot?

I'm to lazy to spllcheck

True.. We could Run out of IPv4 Space By 2010...
But since we're going to have to freaking upgrade every router, adn networked piece of software.. do we really want to stick with IP?
I mean, I wonder if there's Some folks out there.. working on a good replacement protocol.. something that does all that Ip does.. But faster, Lower on memory, and easier?
Maybe IPv6 Isn't the answer.. Maybe We'll end up using Some weird Child of Banyan Vines.. Oor Ipx.. Or maybe there will be an open sourced Protocol.. Or maybe We will all fall under the Sway of Mr. Gates. and us MicrosoftIP-2000
-Warning I'm too lazy to spellcheck---
-And I could be making all of this up-
-So Take it all with a grain of Salt.-
Amen to that rant. :-)

I'm not sure who the real Hack/Crack(Insert term)'ers are now... But I have this gut feeling that whatever real hackers thee are out thee.. they're laughing whenever they see site such as Anti, etc...
Awell... Praise the internet for easy access to information.. No don't mind me, I'm about to drift out, and dream about the olden day's of BBS'ing... ahh sweet sweet 1990 and Telegard, and PcBoard..
So, Now we have a 128K Upload limit...
My reaction... I saw it coming.. you can't sell High-Speed internet service, without expecting to have some dumb-fucking kids with warez sites abuse it... So.. Thanks to a few really stupid in DUHviduals, everyone else has to suffer... Yeah, it really fucking sucks.. but Alot of the blame is placed on Johnny 14-yeard old running a WarFTP server off of his mommy's Compaq Deskpro.
What TCI should/could/needs to do is start tracking down the assholes who run Warez/mp3/porn(Insert Illegal stuff here) Servers, and prosecute the little fuckers.. or make the bastards pay some $$$ for the amount of bandwidth they abused.. Make the little bastards learn not to abuse a system, and ruin it for everyone else... Stupid Fucking Children, ruined it for everyone else.
I know that DejaNews has part of their operations based in Austin... (In the arboretum) And I also know that they are looking for some really highly skilled/hardcore Linux Admins... Plus People that are godlike with INN. Ya might want to check out their employment link on their website...
:-/
Anywho.. Austin Does have a decent amount of *nix jobs.. but for folks like me (Crazy NT admins) I'm actaully having to relocate to Milwaukee to get a decent paying NT Admin job.
Is there an EASY/Possible wat to migrate about
150+ Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Emailboxes/clients
to A linux box running sendmail/Qmail?
Obviously.. There's a few Gotchas.. That I
can spew out off hand:
-Lost mail that is stored on teh Echnage server
-Password/user verification.. How do I keep
The same username/pass combo on the linux box
synced with what's on the NT boxes/PDC
-MS Exchange public Folders... Can I port/convert
these over to Some other format/Program?
Something like WWWThreads 3.0 would replace
it just fine... But I would Lose all of the old
Data, and I would run into more password
verification problems... (How to Sync some
public folder/message board system with the
existing NT PDC/Boxen)
So... That's more than a few annoying problems
to deal with, when considering to go from a
Microsoft Exchange Server to a Sendmail or
Qmail setup. Ach.
But the benfits are many... for one thing.. I don't think a Ppro-200 W/ 128megs of ram would
CHOKE running Sendmail with 150 Mailboxes..
Our NT box.. (THe above mentioned Ppro-200) routinly CHOKES quite severely on 150 Users)
Ack... Any advice/etc to move all those users to Sendmail?
Aww yes... Thank you VERY much? :-)
You on ADSL or cable? (or work?
My little ADSL line is maxing out right now...
~120K per sec... Thank you!
