    The funny thing is that of those 15,786 jobs, not one has any economic impact on Sun's bottom line. It's like the old joke - what do Bill Gates and Scott McNealy have in common? Neither can make a dime on Java.

    My $BIG_FORTUNE_500_EMPLOYER uses a ton of Java...but I don't think Sun makes a dime on any of it. We certainly aren't using their IDE tools, nor running the code on Sun servers.

    It's nice that Sun is open-sourcing Java. But it's also kind of funny/sad that only Sun would invent a hugely successful product, not make a dime on it, and yet keep it closed-sourced for 13 years.

    I did go, and the parent is right. Anyone who thinks the old Soviet Union had a working democracy (in the "free press, free speech, freedom of assembly, vigorous debate in a marketplace of ideas") is deluding himself. Same thing for the rule of law - yes, crime was low, but so were the absolute rights of citizens (e.g., habeas corpus).

    Of course, things are not much better now.

    Look at Macintosh. It is unix based, has a better user interface than Linux, more informal support, a major consumer brand name behind it, MS Office is natively available...

    I have an exceptionally keen sense of smell. And on top of that, I take a medication that has a side effect of heightening the sense of smell. Trust me, you are better off with no smell than one that picks up every hint of human funk, bad breath, or barely-expired meat product.

    Just so everyone knows, Novick has zero chance of winning. Seriously. I'm not commenting on his views or stands, it's just the reality. I live in PDX and read the local papers, etc. and he really is an underdog to the point of Don Quixote.

    The inventer of this device never indended it for playback. What good is a recording that can't be played back?

    I just recorded an entire immersive virtual world simulation of Ancient Rome on a single Cheerio and have it here at my desk. It's only intended for recording, though - you can't play it back.

    I'd say that's far less than the cost of equivalent entertainment at the movies which would have cost me something like $350 (for me and someone else) just in ticket costs.

    That is the right way to look at it.

    It's the people who say they made $200 "in profit" that drive me nuts. Spending 20 hours to make $200 (which is really $120 after taxes) means you're making less than minimum wage. I guess they don't teach about "opportunity cost" in high school economics any more.

    Remember, at one time IBM had 100% of the PC business.

    Uh, no it didn't. It might have had 100% of the IBM-PC-compatible business, but there were plenty of other personal computers competing contemporaneously with it - Tandy, Apple, Commodore, etc. And there were PCs before the IBM-PC (e.g., Altair).

    The "Space Shuttle" system was, and remains, one of the most complex and sophisticated 'machines that moves' ever designed and built.

    And hopefully the Chinese will now go off and waste 30 years on it like we did.
