Runs embedded Linux. They will SELL you a copy of it. I see nothing on the site about sharnig the source modifications and NOTHING about GPL. I'm no Linux wiz here but umm - isn't something missing ala Linksys here?
The MediaBoxOS distribution is a royalty free software package which means you can build/distribute as many copies as you want.
Their screenshot shows Apache, Joe, and a few other OSS packages ready to install. Hrm, have I overlooked something?
The Xenarc screens are supposed to be better than the Lilliput screens FWIW. I've purchased a 7inch version with vid capability as well as VGA for under $400 off of EBAY.
I've been looking into this in order to monitor what's going on with my car's standalone EFI system. Since that EFI system's software allows me to build "dashboards" I can do LOTS of interesting displays. So it seems that some cameras can be done remotely without mechanical crap. Never found any of this in my previous research! Apparently, according to one site, some folsk run video cameras up with the kite so they can see what the camera will be taking pics of and even zoom using these dgital switches. Interesting stuff....
How long does everyone think it will be before someone gets arrested taking pictures of a bridge using a kite? Or maybe they will simply arrest people for flying kites cameras be damned?
I looked into doing this awhile back myself after having had a BLAST at the beach flying a kite of mine QUITE high. Suspendnig the camera is one issue but something I think could be solved. Figuring out how to remotely trigger it is the PITA. I found one site talking about using a remote control which it looks like this guy is doing too. Getting the camera to not shut down after a shoert time period while you were still getting the kite up in the air might also be a hassle. I've got two crappy digital cams that I'll not ever be using again - one of them looks like it might be perfect for this despite it's crappy resolution.
Hrm, wonder what a night shot would look like? Put a light stick on the kite to track it maybe? Need to figure out how best to trigger the darned thnig - mechanical servos and whatnot seem silly, there needs to be a way to remotely trigger a switch without alot of extra crap going up with it...
Right there with you only I managed to find one - I THINK. The same shop was also selling modified ones with optical digital outputs for about $50 more. They were the ONLY place I could find them ni stock and I'm sure that's no longer the case. paid $69 for mine and have been sent tracking info so fingers are crossed that it arrives.

Japan? checkout the Buffalo Linkstation mentioned above. If you can read Kanji it looks like this device has HUGE support over there and has been hacked pretty good - it comes with a built-in HD and USB 2 support along with the 10/100 NIC...

Sure - the hack is quite simple and requires little to no Linux skill. I had a Replay, I now have a DTIVO. I also wanted to NOT suffer a double encoding loss on SAT shows I was recording. The Replay networking was slick, however the multitude of things I couldn't do was simply too great - it now sits in a closet.
