  1. NX command in the Celeron? on New Celeron D Core gets a Speed Boost · · Score: 4, Insightful

Anyone tested the effectiveness of the NX command on an AMD CPU with Linux or the beta SP for XP? IMO if it's as good at stopping overflows as claimed this could provide a competitive edge to the company that has it if the other doesn't....

No driver fiddling, no recompiling, no patches, no hair pulling! i fire up Knoppix-STD, plug ni my Lucent card, run an applet to configure my wireless, and away I go with Kismet, Airsnort, Wallenreiter (sp?), Airtraf, and other tools like Ethereal. Knoppix has allowed me, a Windows user, to experience and get accustomed to Linux without having to worry about hosing a drive or sweating arcane drivers issues. If I screw something up or get lost I can simply reboot and be back to square one with no damage done. as soon as I figure out how to mount a USB FOB and install my own apps on it etc. I'll be well on my way to moving a Linux partition onto my HD full time :-)

IMO, Knoppix provides a terrific way to introduce people to Linux. You can also use it to (more) securely surf on strange computers if you want. I see someone has linked to soemthing called Gnoppix below this - I'll be checking that out next! Live Distros rock! :-)

Has Intel said anything about doing the same with their P4 series or Celeron CPUs? I know that Intel does it or will do it with their 64bit stuff but I'm curious about more Joe User consumer level CPUs. AMD is doing it with their 64bit CPU too so it looks like Intel may have to follow them on again.

Along those lines - anyone tested this functionality? How effective is the NX going to be - is it all hoopla and wishful thinking? Does the beta SP2 for XP carry the code to support the NX stuff so that it can at least be tested for effectiveness?

News.com reported Linux will have this before MSFT (lol) but I'm really wondering just how many of the exploits out there this will stop...

Okay, so maybe OT but if this CPU command really is effective having low cost CPUs supporting it could really help things. Heh and being an AMD stock holder I'd love to see them beat Intel up on this :-)

Cute, my lengthy response was just lost :-( Fool me once...

What to look for on the gauge that I use and on another has been the subject of much debate. An engineer who has designed one of the W/Bs in question has told us to shoot for stoich or 14.7:1 unless I've misunderstood him. How it would correct I'm not sure but in any case I can read down to 9:1 if I must.

Unfortunatly E85 hasn't made much penetration here or I'd certainly be willing to try running it. My injectors ought to handle it so long as the additional volume isn't too great, my injector O-rings wouldn't though. Swapping out injectors and O-rings would be a small price to pay for the higher octane and lower cost although I'm sure I'd use it in grater quantities. The rail is my primary concern, I'm not sure it's anodized but that's nothing a bucket of acid and a battery couldn't fix.

I can understand not wishing to replace and reprogram an EMS if it's what you do for a living. However these days to wring out performance you're forced to either reprogram or toss the OEM computer. Since my OEM computer was pushing 10 years old it's not flash programmable like many of newer OBD-II models. It's been cracked by a few but non-specific soldered chip upgrades leave me pretty cold. I was also not interested in retaining the restrictive Toyota MAF. I'd have likely maxed it out in any case, I may try a hot wire MAF later though just for kicks. MAF replacements like the HKS VPC are hacks and band-aiding my stock setup seemed like a poor idea at best.

So, here I am with a brand new computer that allows me MANY more functions than the stock one did and can be reprogrammed completely. I can understand that this wouldn't be fun for you but for me it's a break from my job and different enough to be fun. :-) If nothing it's a challenge and something new to learn about which I enjoy....

No actually it wouldn't be that hard - I run a standalone EMS made by AEM on my car. Any retuning for the E85 would be done by the same guy that tuned it in the first place - me :-) My lines are already Teflon lined, my OEM tank plastic, my FPR anodized. I think that leaves my rail (might be anodized) and my injector O-rings.

Hrm, a nit - no firmware in the injectors, only in the computer running the show and in my case it's fully programmable. Not all cars run MAF either, mine is currently speed density which I prefer.

My W/B is also compatible and it will sense oxygen just as it always has - stoich doesn't change and oxygen doesn't come from the fuel. Why the oxygen sensor will still read correctly is complicated but the short answer I've been given is that my W/B (and most others actually) read Lambda and convert to A/F. Lambda for Meth is apparently the same for gas or somesuch. The engineers who imparted this knew better than I having done it so I asked few questions about it.

So yeah, I do know what's involved for the most part and am prepared to switch should an E85 station ever happen to open up near me. My biggest problem would probably be tank capacity and possibly injector capacity. However when I swap a ported head on I'm moving up to 6x 83lb injectors just to make sure I've got capacity to spare. I'm likely to begin maxing out the 72s I have now before too long and certainly if I go race gas and turn the boost way up...

More info on the EMS can be found at www.aempower.com in their forums if you or others are interested.

Who's guide service does it use - are they also paying for that and it's attendant bandwidth too? Is there a subscription fee for that service or not? If they point to it they pay for it somehow so that's a cost as well. If they don't have commited guide service and it goes away they have to deal with a bunch of angry customers so one way or another it's a cost to them.

Seems to me that they're doing this "right" so far as the GPL is concerned and they even spell out in their warranty what they feel is okay and not with regards to modifying the software. They haven't completely hacked out the ability to skip commercials either, just sort of turned it off in a way a smart consumer could turn it back on.

Frankly - this sounds alot like a damned nice ReplayTV replacement if the guide service is available. for awhile now I've used a Replay and now a DirecTIVO but have heard of MythTV. I have never set one up though as I simply didn't want the hassle - with a box like this being built in a SMART fashion many people such as myself could purchase it and get interested in MythTV development. Heck, with a sort of "standard" hardware platform out there the MythTV project could develop all sorts of interesting features geared toward it and these guys might even make enough dough to be able to help support that! they are apparenty WELL aware of the GPL and it looks like they tried to honor it, is there any reason to think they wouldn't be willing to support the project in turn if they manage to make some decent money here?

Isn't this sort of the way everyone would like to see good Open Source projects go? Personally this sounds really cool to me - if it were on a DIRECT box somehow or maybe a cable receiver with two tuners I'd be interested in purchasing one!

The heart of this matter - despite everyone turning this into an RIAA debate - is that a member of the Motion Picture trade association appears to be helping AUTHOR documents for a legislative office. The abiloity to do video extraction without removing the HD is also VERY nice and can be easily done on a DIRECTIVO. The 5series DISH DVRs have had some serious bugs, the 721 supposedly cannot deconflict recordings between it's two tuners - this must be done manually by the user. The 921 (that right?) is hard as heck to get, costs a grand, and has it's Firewire ports disabled currently. DIRECT S2s have disabled USB2 ports too but they're easily enabled. DISH has higher capacity machines out of the box, DIRECT is DIRT simple to upgrade and has more mature software. I've "rebooted" my DIRECTIVO once in 3 months, some 5 series owners were reporting that they rebooted DAILY to retain functionality. DISH has terrific P0RN offerings, DIRECT has sports - I'd prefer P0RN personally. :-)

After reading the horror stories on the 5 series DVRs, seeing the reports the 721 couldn't deconflict it's tuners, and nearly fainting at the $1K pricetag of the 921 I spent $99 and went DIRECT. Yeah, as a new DISH subscriber they offer free DVRs but as a current DISH user I'd have gotten boned for new hardware or sold older hardware that was on it's way out (again). DISH used to let me get East and West coast locals so I could time shift without a second tuner but they stopped that, a single tuner wasn't going to cut it. Sure, DISH has some dual tuner PVR, one that I'm sure of, but it will NOT deconflict between the two tuners if you schedule two things to be recorded at once - you must do it yourself! (this from a review of the box when it was released) Season Pass? DISH never heard of it. Video Extraction? Pull the drive to do it with a DISH system. Network connection for streaming? Oh, they said they will waive my "reconnect fee" (?!) if I switch back since I was such a longtime customer. Puhlease!

I have a DIRECTIVO now. It has two 120+Gig drives with over 200 hours of capacity. It has a USB 100meg network connection that allows me to pull fairly compliant MPEG video (unscrambled) pretty easily. I can customize the graphics if I choose. It has a WEB server on it that allows me to monitor it's status. I can Telnet into it to do maintenance or make changes, I can also watch for errors as it boots on a console terminal. It won't skip commercials but my Replay couldn't do that anymore on many channels anyway. I DO have a 30second skip that works great for getting past commercials. The TIVO will also record shows it think I might like - often I don't want them but I can delete content easily enough.

My ONE complaint with the TIVO is the SLOW ass CPU. With this much data being recorded it can take forever to bring up a list of recorded shows . Oh, and yes I've hacked the snot out of my DIRECTIVO box, most of this simply cannot be done with the DISH PVR.
