  1. Always Better on Will the End of Moore's Law Halt AI Progress? (mindmatters.ai) · · Score: 1

Given mountains bursting with data and endless combinations of that data being worked with it becomes a mathematical certainty that AI would not become ever stronger as time passes. obviously the hardware that could be built to optimize such gargantuan labor is beyond our imagination but we will see computers optimized by AI that get ever stronger. building a power supply for such machines would be mind boggling and the waist heat from such a system could become greater than the heat generated by stars.

  2. When you buy a thing you own that thing. It is that simple. The Ayn Rand crowd would just be dandy with control after sale practices.

  3. Nuclear power is simply the release of energy stored over a very long time. As such it is simply adding heat to the environment. Solar power and wind power simply use heat that would be here anyway. Thus it is far better at preserving the environment than operating a nuke.

  4. Anytime an action is taken either by a company or an individual there must be considerations for those that are effected whether the effect is direct or indirect. I can quickly think of one exception. No business or individual has any duty to preserve the abilities of competitors to make a living. Even at the lowest level of commercial cleaning operations their are business owners who will burn vans or attack a competitor physically over their supposed right to earn a living. With 90% of the world's children breathing unsafe air it is time that some serious alteration of business morality must be made.

  5. Even a wonderful genius like Mr. Hawking can go too far and publish nonsense. None of us know a thing about whether there is a god or not. We go by our feelings and not by fact. It is also a fact that no one can claim that there is not a god as it is not a thing that can be known. As far as AI being so dangerous I think that may be also irrational. Yes, AI will shake us to our core and cause massive social changes. If AI acquired power over all of humanity there is no reason to believe it would do harm at all. It might make life far better for all of us. It is the in between use of AI that will cause some grief. Think of it this way. When the automobile was first in play it destroyed the horse industry. That meant that the huge number of workers in that industry were suddenly not working at all. It was painful for those workers and that could not be helped. Today we have a very similar issue. The use of coal for all reasons needs to be totally forbidden. Only a blockhead would not understand that for states like W. Va. the public would almost have to totally abandon the state. Nobody wants those folks to suffer even more than they already have yet it is obvious that the coal industry must be shut down world wide. AI will simply bring on even larger changes and a very rapid speed. It is up to the public, not to hold back or slow down AI, . But it really is our duty to change our beliefs and our systems to prevent as much suffering as possible.

  6. The Navy Already Does on Rolls-Royce Wants To Fill the Seas With Self-Sailing Ships (wired.com) · · Score: 2

If what I read a while back was true the US Navy is already ahead on automated ships. The idea was something like an old battle barge with limited propulsion and water sloshing over the decks. It would be towed into place by a large war ship and set free for the last two or three hundred miles. It would stop at a pre determined location and wait for the weapons to be used if need be. I do not know the degree to which it is a drone or if it can attack without any human contact. Being unmanned, the danger to seamen is vastly reduced as well as this war machine not needing to carry food and sleeping areas etc..

  7. More, Please Sir on MIT Plans College For AI, Backed by $1 Billion (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

Now if we can get many more universities having major A1 facilities we just might have aa chance of getting ahead of other nations. Build more and build them better !

  8. An Enemy Not Seen on UK Steps Towards Zero-Carbon Economy (bbc.com) · · Score: 0

To be for CO2 control while wanting economic growth is simply not possible. We must have CO2 control but we must resist all growth. That includes population growth. Pollution is a consequence of human activity. The more humans we have the more pollution we must have. So yes, we must totally change all of our economic policies and habits. And yes, wealthier people will take a harder hit than the poor. In my area it would help to freeze new construction including not allowing new rooms to be added to homes or businesses. We also need to get gas and diesel cars and trucks reduced in number quite quickly. We are left with electric vehicles or hydrogen using vehicles as a consequence. We also need to consider limiting travel and tourism to reduce emissions. We then might want to look at how close a person would be required to live to their place of employment. It will be shocking but there really is zero choice if we wish human life to survive.

  9. NASTY IDIOTS on Canadian Music Group Proposes 'Copyright Tax' On Internet Use (torrentfreak.com) · · Score: -1, Troll

People who want a broken government always push for expensive new agencies that force all kinds of tax increases. One can easily predict hundreds of new agencies as society becomes more and more complex. It won't work.

  10. Death From The Right Wing on The EPA's Bold New Idea Has Massive Implications For Public Health (motherjones.com) · · Score: 1

Obviously the EPA is crippled by current right wing politics. The right wing loonies should be forced to drink only water from Flint !

  11. The US, a few years ago, put chips in top end printers, under the assumption that when they were exported that foreign governments would be the typical purchaser. So if you were in Iraq and wondered why that smart bomb picked your chimney it was due to the printer sending the address. Sometimes what goes around comes straight down right at your noggin.

  12. And Then ? on New Yorkers Sue Trump and FEMA To Stop Presidential Alert (cnet.com) · · Score: 0

So we get a message at 2 AM that Russia is sending nukes. Won't that be wonderful. That way we can be wide awake when we are vaporized. Seriously what good is it to have a nationwide alert? A local alert that a dam is about to burst might save lives but a nationwide alert will be next to useless. For example, if the mega volcano under Yellowstone decides to erupt There might be a few survivors in S. Florida and Nova Scotia so exactly what good is it to tell the nation that they are about to die?

  13. I can understand that the high cost of start-up of indoor food production discourages many owners. So why not build smaller modules and do both indoor and outdoor crop production and gradually build more automated units so that the income flow is steady while the modernization takes place. Also, we can hope that an automated, indoor farm will be able to contain any chemical pollution instead of letting it run off and contaminate waterways etc..

  14. Huge Issue on AI Could Devastate the Developing World (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

Right now some nations are competitive and some are not. The same goes for individuals some are competitive and many are not. We can not ignore the soon coming changes that will leave almost everyone unemployed and neither can the developing nations. The degree of change that we must create to keep the non competitive people up and running and having real spending money is at hand. If they do not have money they can not support business nor can they support a nation a they have so little to pay taxes with. If we fail to jump on this we will be doomed unless global warming kills us first. For now the climate change deniers should explain that we now have Jaguars in Arizona as it is now warm enough for them to make their home.

  15. Problems will occur on Many Job Ads on Facebook Illegally Exclude Women, ACLU Says (nbcnews.com) · · Score: 2

As an example those that rent out a room in their homes are not bound by the anti discrimination laws. I choose to live with women and not males or a person of my own race or religion that does not violate any laws at all. Now just what can Facebook do? A room for rent posting can be for my own home or a home that I don't even live in. So now will I be discriminated against and not allowed to choose who is in my home?

  16. Although there are some wonderful exceptions the price of the home determines the quality of the student. The kid from the 600K home is usually a better student than the kid from a 200K home. Economic freedom does not exist in the US and many innocents are deprived of what they need to turn into top scholars. In a way it is the same type of problem that we see in the courts. If you can afford large lawyer and trial expenses you will be found not guilty, get a short sentence or sent to a nice and easy prison.

  17. I understand that the Cruise missiles once launched can function without any human input at all. They have been around for over 20 years. Police also use robotics in dangerous situations. I can imagine no better tool to protect military installations and also to advance on battle fields. They could also be of great use in areas in which drive by shootings take place. Training them to only fire at vehicles that are shooting at people would make the drive by shooting a thing of the past and the joy of a robot is that it can stay in place in all weather for a very long time.

  18. As an alternative we simply need to announce that Trump solved all the warming issues by personally designing and insdtalling some magical technology and at least 35% of Americans can sleep tight firmly knowing that the orange lunatic has saved them completely.

  19. High prices for internet services are also an issue. Competition is one answer. I see no reason that I can not have three or four cables running to my home. One possible consequence is local governments providing net services at no charge. The suburb I live in is over 200 miles long and with a large, dense population. That makes it hard to understand why we don't have competitive cable for all homes and businesses.

  20. In my area when we have our frequent wind storms it is not rare to have a commercial vesel of large size lose power and be driven onto our beaches. In one case the bow of an ocean liner came across the sand and was resting in the swimming pool of a condominium. Fixing that sort of thing is very expensive. Now, can these windmills take a hit from a large ship? How well do these turbines do when we have 180 mph. winds that gust even higher? How often would an event be expected based on local historic events and what cost would be involved to repair or replace the turbine?

  21. Thank God For Working Brains on Scientists Warn the UN of Capitalism's Imminent Demise (vice.com) · · Score: 1

It is so obvious that capitalism is a failure and so rare that smart people are willing to dive into the issue. Thank God for this research as we are on the verge of a horror story and usual politics will not address the problems at all.

  22. In some parts of America a single man with a $1,000 a month income would be better off in prison. Medical care alone would wipe them out. I am aware that in some places local prices and conditions would make life at times reasonable for a single person. In my area the rent for a humble one bedroom apartment is $1500 a month. A social security net implies an income that keeps you squarely up with the community. At $1,000 a month that person is locked into almost a depraved poverty meaning that it is no social safety net at all. And it creates another severe issue. What can any business gain from people with seriously low income? Businesses hate the poor as they simply can not be farmed. After all, they won't be buying cars, eating out or buying clothing. That hatred is what was behind attacking the hobo camps in 1930. Any place hobos wanted to build a camp was attacked both by mobs and the government. The attitude was that they could not buy anything and they would surely steal your chickens and laundry off of your clothes lines. If one looks at the hell hole slums in S. America and thinks a bit those slums exist because they need to exist. Despite the depravity, disease, crime and filth the people in those slums are better off than if the slums were demolished. Perhaps it is time for the US to allow slum communities with cardboard and scrap metal housing.

  23. Yes, loss of value as well as much higher taxes are a consequence of rising seas. Your tax dollars have been supporting the alteration of military bases to cope with rising waters. Miami has a large expense already in the creation of pumping systems to keep the beach area from frequent flooding. What we are doing now should have been done 30 years ago when Al Gore made public the tragedy of rising seas. Now the second shoe will drop. As the building values drop the insurance companies will want to charge the same sums or even more for buildings that are now at half value due to threat of flooding. It also means that there will be no interest in taking new customers. Banks will not write mortgages due to flood risks which halts all new construction . As insurance companies pay out for losses the banks that own the insurance companies will become weaker. In much of Florida fresh drinking water will only occur if desalinization plants operate meaning water bills for home will sore enough to devalue existing homes and mansions. Population numbers will shift to higher areas causing all kinds of disruption and chaos. This issue is urgent beyond imagination and it is a huge enough problem that government will not be able to deal with it at all. Conservatives have effectively doomed this nation as we know it. With current sea levels it is unwise to be near any river or sea shore if a hurricane comes along. The chaos will be strongly amplified and God help us if a storm comes ashore at high tide. It will be tragic.

  24. What a dire threat. We wouldn't want zombies to feel uncomfortable but I don't understand why a dead zombie would be bothered by the threat of death. This type of action leads me to believe that our law makers are in fact zombies as they seem to never do anything and cause the population to pay them big bucks. That Trump guy might be a zombie. i always thought he was probably a space alien but maybe he really is a zombie. do other beings from other planets have alien zombies?

  25. Re: Everyone knew the pump and dump was coming... on Fewer Than Half of Young Americans Are Positive About Capitalism (cnbc.com) · · Score: 1

Capitalism is a mess. It must be rolled back as we are entering an automated era in which humans will rarely have jobs. Picture a system that works like this : Every Friday you get two checks. One is for $800 for you and your family to spend. Then you get another check for $1,000 which you must invest within 24 hours. Those that make good choices on the $1,000 in stocks that they were required to buy will live higher than those that make lousy choices. That gives us a social pecking order which seems to be vital in the human mind. Taxes will be paid by the businesses as well as by taxing income from those $1,000 per week investments. The simple truth is that we have zero choice in this due to our competition with other nations. If they can produce cheaper by using more automation then we will all live in poverty. Increasing the abilities of automation in the US is now a matter of national survival. And it also offers a proof. That proof is that the form of socialism that I have described is fit to survive and that capitalism is no longer fit to survive. And by the way if capitalism is defined as a free market then it has always been nonsense. No market has ever been free of laws, rules and taxes and never will be. One can not be partially socialist just like my sister can not be partially pregnant. A free market is an absolute. The market can not be partially free and all markets are regulated. Even in very primitive tribes the guy with the strongest arm enforces what he thinks trade should be like. It is astounding how the public can be led around by the nose with beliefs that are total nonsense.
