Why not use a radio transmitter in the tennis ball (or soccer ball or whatever) to record its exact position? I am certain this has been discussed and I wouldn't be surprised if it's already in use. The article's "Hawkeye" just works by optical analysis.

I don't know about the cities in the 'States where it was implemented, but in Vancouver, BC, after a short period (less than 6 months) where business declined, patronage of bars and restaurants actually increased to higher than original levels. This is because the majority of people (~80%) in Vancouver don't smoke, and a lot of people were avoiding these places because of all the smoke in the air. I have to say, it's a real pleasure to have a beer in a pub and not go home smelling like an ashtray.
More to the point, putting stuff out on ftp or file sharing and just expecting 'someone, out there' or a bunch of those 'someones' to keep and back up important archival information is just asking for that information to disappear with nary a whimper. Noone will even know it's gone until they go looking for it.

That does not make the President exempt from those laws. He is still liable for prosecution. As well he should be.

Well, the word processor formats in discussion here are all markup languages, so it would be more like the sort of thing that goes on in latex2html. I'm sure the document translation can be worked out pretty well.

That seems pretty empty to me. They will still have the information. If they promised to not keep a record of the caller's number, I'd feel better about it.
A friend of mine works as a market strategist for eBay in Europe. While he was in town this summer he asked me who I thought eBay's biggest competition was. I said I really didn't see another competitor in the on-line or virtual auction space. He just smiled and said, "Google", then explained to me how virtually all of eBay's business is small B to P, and eBay really just brings them together. Google does the same thing with their search engines and targeted advertisements, and is getting better at it.

I think there's some sci-fi book where the loser and his lawyer dies. That might work too, but I don't think most people would go for that.
