Why not use a radio transmitter in the tennis ball (or soccer ball or whatever) to record its exact position? I am certain this has been discussed and I wouldn't be surprised if it's already in use. The article's "Hawkeye" just works by optical analysis.
It's been tried in soccer. The latest attempts were prior to the last couple of World Cups IIRC, but the systems were plagued with problems, not the least of which was the survival of the transmitter.
I don't know about the cities in the 'States where it was implemented, but in Vancouver, BC, after a short period (less than 6 months) where business declined, patronage of bars and restaurants actually increased to higher than original levels. This is because the majority of people (~80%) in Vancouver don't smoke, and a lot of people were avoiding these places because of all the smoke in the air. I have to say, it's a real pleasure to have a beer in a pub and not go home smelling like an ashtray.
More to the point, putting stuff out on ftp or file sharing and just expecting 'someone, out there' or a bunch of those 'someones' to keep and back up important archival information is just asking for that information to disappear with nary a whimper. Noone will even know it's gone until they go looking for it.

Why should wealth be inheritable any more than any other form of power? Unearned wealth from inheritance should be taxed heavily.
Because the money has already been taxed during its accumulation? Because the whole point of amassing wealth is to give your children a better life? Because the government does absolutely no service of any value in the transferrence of that wealth?
The President can ignore any law passed by Congress any time he choses. Congress has no authority over the exercise of executive power. Period. You may have learned about this concept in high-school civics class. It's usually refered to as "seperation of powers".
That does not make the President exempt from those laws. He is still liable for prosecution. As well he should be.
Sure, just like you can convert back and forth between C code and assembler automatically. Just try editing that C code after one round trip though!
Well, the word processor formats in discussion here are all markup languages, so it would be more like the sort of thing that goes on in latex2html. I'm sure the document translation can be worked out pretty well.

You (and your budget) will thank me later."
From the article: "Finally, EFF co-founder and board member John Gilmore has independently taken up one of the more important civil-liberties causes of recent years, attempting to sue for the right to travel by air within the USA without having to show identification. This is a very important case, and it's up for appeal later this week, so let's dwell on it a bit. Indeed, there is no good reason why anyone should not be permitted to travel incognito, and many good reasons why one should. This is a case that can, and should, be won. Surely, only an EFF principal could blow this one, yet blow it he did. The combination of Gilmore's preposterous and inflammatory libertarian rhetoric and his unreasonable demand that he not be subject to any security measures, like a bag search and a pat down, mean that his appeal, scheduled for 8 December, will almost certainly go down the tubes with his original attempt."
I'm grateful that the man is willing to volunteer his time to defend citizens' rights in the courts, but deliberately lumping elements that will surely be defeated into a winnable case makes you wonder who's side he's really on.
Google says the service is free for callers even on long-distance calls, and it promises not to divulge the caller's number to anyone.
That seems pretty empty to me. They will still have the information. If they promised to not keep a record of the caller's number, I'd feel better about it.
A friend of mine works as a market strategist for eBay in Europe. While he was in town this summer he asked me who I thought eBay's biggest competition was. I said I really didn't see another competitor in the on-line or virtual auction space. He just smiled and said, "Google", then explained to me how virtually all of eBay's business is small B to P, and eBay really just brings them together. Google does the same thing with their search engines and targeted advertisements, and is getting better at it.
If you follow the Mary Magdalene is the grail, and drinking from the grail would give you eternal life . . .
I thought it was more like it was holy blood, not a holy cup (sang raal vs. san graal), and referred to the Merovingian kings of France being decendants of Jesus. So, if drinking the holy blood makes you immortal...(/me skips the obvious vampire joke.)

Doesn't anyone watch movies? Any company that claims to "Do No Harm" is obviously the most evil vile company of them all.
Are we talking about Google or the AMA here?

Why not brand them? Or put a tattoo on their foreheads?

Quick! Convert them to HD-DVD, er, Blu-Ray, er...

Looks like D-Link is violating #5...
Corporations are not individuals and are thus not entitled to the rights preserved for individuals.
Yeah, right. Maybe that's the way it should be, but it certainly isn't the way it is.

How can someone even claim "buy it now" is a tangible invention in the first place? Concepts and ideas are not supposed to be patentable!
I believe it follows under 'business model' patents, which I believe should not be allowed in the first place.

not to mention the intel GMA900 graphics processor isn't exactly the speediest thing around.
Don't mention it, then. Especially since the iMac Core Duo uses a PCI-Express ATI Radeon X1600.

... which makes me wonder, why doesn't the USA use the same (open source, australian or indian) voting software for their elections?
Because the Republicans couldn't then go and rig the election? *ducks*

Ok...., so which is it?

I think there's some sci-fi book where the loser and his lawyer dies. That might work too, but I don't think most people would go for that.
You might be thinking of the Gowachin courtarena in "The Dosadi Experiment". It's nicely described here. Good book.

I'm also pretty sure an energy shield an order of magntitude greater than the device would help dissipate any explosion
What exactly would be the nature of this 'energy field'? You've been watching way too many sci fi movies.
...have I been embarassed to be Canadian...until now.
Exactly! Guilty until proven innocent is the base of our entire judicial system.
