1 terahertz is an obvious advance too. Just because its obvious doesn't make it easier. I'm sure that IBM has had prototypes of dual chips on one die before. They wanted the 7000 series(G4) of the Power PC chips to have a high end model that was 4 processors in the processors core. It is just hard to do. Just like it is hard to write an operating system that will make Non-SMP programs utilize SMP. Windows 2000 has "load-balancing" where it will run processes that are processor intensive on the chip that isn't running the OS.

This not something you will see on Toms Hardware. Clockspeed isn't everything. A 500mhz 21264 DEC Alpha is MUCH faster than a 500mhz PIII. The Power4 is not a desktop processor. Compaq will not ship computers with the Power4 processor in them. People need to understand this! When was the last time you saw a benchmark that was PIII vs. RS/6000? Second of all, good luck on coming up with the cash to buy one. Even if where you worked got one they would still keep it under lock and key tighter than Fort Knox (to all you non-US people, Fort Knox is a place owned by the Treasury department where lots of precious metals are stored. I moderated this one up because everyone should read what this guy has to say. I have my CNE. I am working on my CCIE.

When I would go for an interview people would look at my resume and ask why I have my CNE, and not my MCSE. I snap right back at them, "Knowing what is needed to know to have a CNE gives me an unparallel understanding of Engineering Network Systems. Being an MCSE would give me an unparallel understanding of the Ctrl-Alt-Del combination." They understood.

I work with 3 MCSE's. They are tools. They might as well have been the models for the MCP dolls. I'll reviece a call about a server going down, or a workstation being kicked off the network, and their first reaction is to just reboot the system. Nevermind the fact that it is a production server. A server that people are accessing important E-Mail, or data from.

I don't blame them. Thats just what they were taught.

Then I realized that you can't escape electricity. You would have to convert the light beams with optical switching sooner or later in the computers, and that would be an insane performance decrease.

You cannot escape the fact that memory will always run on electricity. It just isn't practical to come up with a type of memory that is based on storing light.

Also you run into the problems with refraction and the fact that if you want to make sure that each light beam doesn't interfere with the other beams during a processor cycle you would have to make the processor very large so you could sheild the indivudual light beams with an opaque material. Also, lasers get very hot. Its just not practical.
