Things like this make you wonder if there is a section of disney animators that are completly seperate from those "Beauty and the Beast" and "Lion King" types. I remember watching "The Secret of Nymh" as a child and it blew my mind (well... to an 8 year old a strobe light was amazing). Although I read somewhere that the mid-eighties Disney animators had joined other companies.
Are you serious? Do you acutally know people who don't think E-Commerce is here to stay? What about the multiple billions of dollars made on E-Commerce each year? Jeff Bezos was Times man of the year. Do you think people are ignoring all the E-Commerce stocks that are driving the market? Or that every commercial on television is "something.com" or we power your Ecommerce solutions? How do you figure that E-commerce needs a boost or name recognition?
Have you ever played everquest? It is what I was so vehemently looking for , for all the time I was playing quake. Visually stunning, challenging, interesting...
"The people who read me are directly involved with technology -- administrators, programmers, developers, students, and many, many highly-technical Linux geeks and nerds. I get mail from programmers, people overseas, from CEO's, government officials, bio-ethicists, geneticists, NSA spooks, and all sorts of teenaged geeks from all kinds of schools, from high school to college...
How can you claim that? You are more arrogant that I ever imagined! So I guess you are the end-all of writers in every community. NSA spooks pull up Katz reviews of movies to find out where technology is headed. You seem to thing that you have an unlimited forum here. Everyone join me in going to your preferences and blocking everythign by Jon Katz. You are abusive of your rights on slashdot and posts things that are definitly not News For Nerds.
Also, How do you claim that you are read by highly technical linux geeks, when you rarely write about anything technical, much less a topic that can be highly technical.
You shouldn't abuse your position. Contrary to what world you have created in your mind, you sir are not a technocrat. You are not respected, your opinions are not well founded or much less explained in any fashion. All you do is sum up stories, dumb them down, then post them on slashdot.
Hell, I could write a perl script that would take the place of you.
No, they are just like a little kid that makes up stories for attention. They are not whining, they are lying! So there is a big difference. Microsoft will "get their faces kicked in" b/c they made up lies about the popular good looking kids, that are more mentally stable and secure with their surroundings (ie. Linux, Solaris).
Jon... you have a/. E-Mail address. I assume you have a/. login. Use it! Also, on the topic of Linux worshipping... If you would just start being more technology savvy then people would call you a technology mogul instead of some guy who reads the first 3 sentences of some NYT.com, writes a way too long article about it that is stating the obvious, then claiming that you are shaping the views of society. Jon, start writing about interesting things in an interesting manner, not just fluff. Everything I have read by you from this to your movie reviews just seems like the fluff you would see on the back of a VHS tape (you know... where they try to sum up the movie in 2 paragraphs).
Another question is... will this replace my DVDPLAYER? Can the PSXII play my DVD Movies? I search and search, and I can never find a definitive answer either way...
The only way I could see Linux being a viable desktop solution for the masses is if we didn't have to petition companies to make Linux versions of their programs. When I can get anything for linux that I can get on my Windows Box I will be set. Until then Linux will stay being my primary server OS, and Win2k will be my client OS.
ps. the reason I use windows as my client is because I do a lot of graphic design with 3dStuido Max, and Lightwave.
640Mb is a full installation of some Linux distros. I think that a full install is over kill. I run a very effiecent L.A.M.P (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server on a 400 MB hard drive. I also have a 1.2 GB hard drive solely for the database and web site, which isn't even 10% full yet.
In response to the question about not releasing the source code with their beta....
...The reason why we wanted to do that was 1) to protect our reputation for producing quality products by not releasing code before it was fully tested...
What does it matter if they release the code to some "Corel Specific" part of their distrobution? If they had released the code, they would be getting hundreds of bug fixes code submissions. These guys do not understand what they are doing.
Email me your mailing address, and I will write you a check (I'm not rich so don't get your hopes up). Your ASP2PHP program is used by me almost daily.
yes it is. I don't know what the USB port is for, but Time Warner said that once the entire infastructure is digital the box will be my cable modem too.

- Tama's batteries only keep her going for one hour.
No, but Tama has about the same battery life of my real cat. I wish I could sleep that much.
I would be pleased with this, but wasn't I reading this on Wired and Salon.com last week? Come on guys! This is old news.
/. article needs someone flaming the story to be old. [/disclaimer]

Are you serious? A week away from the computer?
Why is Katz posting anonymous?
What it can mean is that certain objects in the universe were traveling faster than the speed of light for a duration of time.

but you have to admit, that EMACS needs a womans touch...
I think if we coded an AI bot that would bug the people that /msged them, with things like 'hey you got any warez', or 'I need help with mIRC'

Given that in 2000 the world is looking at making the 64-bit transition on the desktop in the next 5 years
I'm sure they said things like that in the 1970's when they programmed the computers at the time.
What it is referring to is ear-piece headphones, like the old gameboy ones.
