Well, given that every game you play on the XBox works solely as a piece of software, without any hardware modification,...
that is because the games are signed by microsoft. as the parent said, it would be able to boot the kernel if it too was signed. otherwise a hardware modification is needed.
we have solaris servers with netscape on them, and i can run it on the server and display it on my linux based workstation. sun is really big on the client/server application thing. you know where you install the software on the server and display it on the cheapish workstation. i dont think it would be unreasonable to have star office installed on a server.
how hard is it to build a windows gaming machine? you spend a couple hours ordering parts, then you spend a couple hours or so putting the thing to gether. then you spend the next day rebooting it over and over again until everything is installed. i know the guy is busy, but it's not that hard to do.
Meat has proteins that we need, and the bean combinations that you need to fully supliment your diet without meat have only been available to everyone in this modern age of transportation, artificial planting, etc.
i would bet a large portion of the indian population would argue that this is incorrect. from speaking with indian friends, i gather that a large portion of their population has been vegetarian for quite a while (read thousands of years). this would be before transportation, artificial planting, etc that we have in this ``modern age''.
If I am trapped in a difficult situation and have to take money from an unfair employer in order to eat and stay alive, am I forbidden from criticising that employer's greedy and dishonest practices, and telling others about them?
while i can see your point with respect to advertisements. i wouldnt equate not being able to play diablo ii with not being able to eat. i personally think such an analogy trivializes people who have real problems. the editors here often comment on video games they play under windows.
i like video games, and really wanted to play warcraft 3 when it came out. since it only runs on windows, i refuse to purchase it. also i've recently stopped purchasing cd's released by members of the riaa, and i'm probably going to stop watching movies for similar reasons. this is really the only thing we can do to make the corporations listen.
all of the email i've been getting starting on friday. it started with delivery failure messages to people i hadnt sent email to. then i started getting email from virus scanning programs telling me i'm sending the klez virus to people. it's odd because i use pine to view/send email on linux. the email is also being sent by an account i only use to recieve email. i just dont want to get blacklisted or something because of a security flaw that occurs on windows systems.
have you read about people doing this under linux? i've had alot more success with operations similar to this under linux than i have under windows. piping many processes together isn't really a problem for any unix system.
the reason for not using the disk has less to do with the space required, and more to do with speed. writing a large chunk of data to a disk (ripping the dvd and writing it to the disk) and reading a large chunk of data from a disk (enconding the stuff on the hard drive) is just plain inefficient. especially when you can eliminating alot of disk io.
if their dvd drives cannot handle the useage, then perhaps they should get better hardware.
once the writes for those huge disks come out, hollywood would be shit scared. you could burn all of your mp3's on 3 disks and send them to anyone anywhere.
plus you could still compress the movies down to regular cdr sizes. you would just loose all that extra stuff you dont have now.
who said he is hiding anything? because he doesnt state something explicitly doesnt mean he is hiding. perhaps he is assuming that other people would assume he made backups.
It was rebuilt from source code - source code that he possibly did not verify, and using a toolchain that was possibly backdoored.
another assumption that i dont think you can accurately make, but hey i cannot stop you.
(Solution being this: have many servers which hold the md5sums or pgp keys. They can't -all- be compromised!)
do you really believe this? i mean really, do you believe this? there is _no_ _completely_ _secure_ method for this. this type of compromise is going to happen everyonce in a while. your method will make it harder, but i dont think it will make it impossible. having everyone who wants to peering over the source reduces the possability of it spreading though.
i would urge developers to do what ever is in their power to make distrabution more secure, but remember that there is no completely secure method. there are just better methods.
too many people are making assumptions. all we know is that the machine was wiped and reinstalled. he could have backed alot of relivent info before he wiped it. this would allow him to fix the computer, get it back up, and inspect the info later at his leisure.
i would wait until more information is available before jumping to what i would consider to be a silly conclusion.
another more likely possability would be that he was using passwordless authentication. so by rooting a box he has access to, the cracker could ssh to any other computer/user with his public key in the authorized_keys file. they could also scp the trojaned file in the same manner. this is not very unlikely.
is there something like this for linux? it would be nice to take advantage of the pc speaker. especially since i dont really use it for much. i wonder if it would be possible to select which pests to annoy. i have pet rats, but would like to scare off any insects.
i no longer purchase cd's from labels that are members of the riaa. it has restricted my purchasing habits a bit, but many of the artists i like are on indy labels. i plan to start writing artists i like who have signed on to riaa labels explaining my problem with their business associates. i realize this will have little effect, someone has to start doing it.
i have a question though. would purchasing used cds be ok? since the labels are not making any money on the resale of the cds. i've thought about contacting artists and asking them if i can send them money directly to copy their cd's my friends own. i'm just tired of paying compaines to lobby congress against me.
in the core of the OS? dos was the core of windows xx pre 95. windows 3.1 probably ran on dos 6.0 at the latest. i must admit that dos 6.22 was and is my favorite microsoft operating system. is it possible you were thinking about windows nt 3.x?
i believe the free software foundation is a not for profit organization. many of these organizations exsist primarly on donations and endowments. i agree that donations are not good business models, but i'm not referring to a business.
the comment i replied to asked where to go to make donations-i simply provided one.
if you are purchasing redhat to support their software, you are indirectly supporting the free software foundations. i say indirect because redhat donates money to them and redhat employs programmers who contribute to the fsf.
if you really enjoy redhat, i would encourage you to donate to the fsf. without the gnu folks, redhat would not be here and linux would not be what we know today.

then you can soak the beans for about 30 min, cook for 20, and then you're done. i have alot of indian friends and they all use pressure cookers.

i understand, i had young sisters. really though, other than the above quoted portion, i really thought it was well written.
have you considered trying to start a grass roots campaign for this? i'd be willing to help work on it here in pittsburgh.
dont worry too much about being gentle once this gets done:
mirror in progress

hey.
have you considered a cheap ide disk for backups? a 40gig drive would cost you about $70.

i dont have a dvd player, and the only people i know who rip them use windows. shouldnt it be possible to pipe the information between programs?
/dev/dvd | avi_compressor -o dvd.avi -
something like this:
$bash: decss_dvd
surely this is possible, and it wouldnt require any more disk space than that required for the avi file.
you know i read on this site that he died a few months ago. that man just wont stay dead.

sorry, it's hard to read that in a comment :)
also look at dyndns.org to get a hostname for your dynamically assigned ip address. it works really well for me.

i know the parent was a long comment, and you probably missed this part:
This is particularly true since I still have to boot off a floppy to install Linux (something about autoboot and my scsi CD-ROM)...
which would suggest that he as trouble booting off of cd's and likes the alternative floppy disks give him.
