    indeed. i have yet to find a mua as useful and extensible as mutt, and i doubt that there will be anytime soon. that is unless there is a gmutt or something similar in the works. really though.

    really though, there are lots of graphical mua out there. and most of them dont care what web browser you are using.

    i was at a friends house working on his computer. i was playing with one of those little keychain usb drive things. i stuck it into the port on his xp box and a drive appeared in the "my computer" thing. i didnt have to add any drivers or anything. the real kicker here is that sure you might have to install drivers in windows but at least they exist. you dont even have such assurances in linux.

    dont get me wrong, i use linux exclusively. so when i purchase new hardware, i know it works with linux before i buy it.

    windows affords users the luxury of not having to go through that. sure this is a direct result of their monopoly on the desktop, but the average user doesnt care about that. they want to be able to buy a cheap ass webcam and have it work. while they may have to stick in a driver disk in windows, there is a good chance there is no support in linux.

    at work i'm using an amd k7 700 + voodoo 3 and at home i have a dual celron 400 + tnt1. both of these machines work fine for pretty much everything i do. one of these 200 machines with a new videocard would suit most of my needs. granted i dont really play any games, but for programming, browsing the web, editing images, watching movies, etc. these would be more that enough.

    this is what contracts are for. if microsoft wants you to do this, they should have you sign a contract enumerating your rights and theirs. i personally think that you should be able to molest any hardware you purchase unless you sign something stating otherwise. i dont think companies should be able to empose restrictions after you've purchased hardware. with cell phones the restrictions are made upfront.

    when you get your "free" cell phone, you agree to pay for their service in the form of a contract. calling the cell phone "free" is really misleading. i was in radioshack the other day buying a cable or something. the guy behind the counter asked me if i want a "free" cell phone. i asked him if it i was required to purchase a plan with it, he said that i was. interesting how people define free.

    companies who base their business model on services or future sales based on obfuscation of their hardware get what they deserve. if they want a more concrete revenue stream, they should have a contract.

    the link died after the slashdotting, but you can still get to it through the google cache. i really dont think it contains over 100 books in mp3 format. if you look at the books they have for download (farther down on the page), most are well over 100 megs each.

    from this page, it looks like they are using viavoice and emacspeak to generate the audio. i think it does all the conversion on the fly with viavoice and that is why it needs 128 meg ram disk. it ouputs in txt, jpeg, tiff braille as well.

    from this link, it seems you can download a bootable cd with the player and a hundred or so books. then you can boot the disc and play the books:

    i wouldnt be surprised if you looked around and found a link to the player. alas the site is now dead. check back in a day or so though and i bet you'll find it.

    they're not recording anything. they're asking you to install the text-to-speech software on your machine and have your machine read it... a feat which most modern OS's can already do out of the box.

    this helps alot. while (1) is nice (2) is essential in my mind.

    the lockin created by proprietary file formats is where monopolies lie. it is critical that government organizations move to file formats which will allow them to choose software based on preformance and cost instead of legacy issues.

    if (1) gives organizations the option to use opensource software in cases where this option did not previously exsist, then i can see the need for it.

    is there something in oregon law preventing open sour software from being considered now? i really think you should instead tell your representative to support a bill forcing the use of open file formats in the government. here "open" should be formats not incumbered by patients and copyrights which are freely available to everyone. it is your data, as a citizen of oregon, and should not be crippled by the format in which it is stored.

    the government should use the best tool for the job. you can give opensource a leg up by specifying that the file formats used be open. microsoft can still play, they would just have to open their file formats - indirect attacks are much better ;).

    my advisor had this problem with his viewsonic monitor under X. it was using the stock Xserver from redhat, when i downloaded the one from nvidia's page it went away. you might be able to get rid of this noise by chaning your refresh rate or upgrading your video drivers.

    in the boolean sense "or" means that if either condition is satisfied, then what follows applies. so object code:

    Object code is the result of a program taking source code and running it through a compiler or assembler. This creates the object code which can then be linked together in such a way that the computer can understand it. Executables are created in such a way. Both are platform/processor dependend. A Mac could not understand the object code created for Linux, just as DOS could not understand the object code created for an Amiga, unless an emulator was used.


    would include executables and thus you would not be allowed to distribute object code under this license.

    their system is really setup to use up2date, which is what i use. it would be hard to be easier than up2date. you can cron it if you are not worried about breaking anything, such as a webserver, dns server, simple server.

    once you get apt installed, it really is easier. to install mplayer i type the following command:

    $apt-get install mplayer

    to upgrade everything

    $apt-get upgrade

    it took about a day to setup the repository, and with that and some perl scripts i can manage 15 computers easily.

    they dont mention this at rhn.redhat.com. i emailed them, but i havent heard back from them yet.

    i was thinking about getting a subscription to their service, but i'm not really interested in up2date. i setup my own apt repository and i'm happily using apt4rpm. my question is do you have rsync access to redhat's servers to their eratta? if not do you know if they offer this in a different service?

    trailer park methmen: these guys purchase a lot of either and try not to blow them selves up. usually they follow a recipe handed down from father to son as mobile homes spring up across the country.

    chemist: these guys make specific combinations of atoms and molecules to for a specific purpose. this is fairly low level stuff that can becime very tedious. typically this is done on a small scale.

    chemical engineer: these guys take the work of the chemist and make it profitable. they take stuff done on a small-typically inefficient-scale and scale it up to production capacity.

    so the flow of technology typicall goes something like this:

    chemist-->chemical engineer-->trailer park methman

    this is alot like the programming world:

    computer scientist -->computer (software) enginner-->visual basic programmer

    sure.

    i admin about 15 computers (redhat 7.2, 7.3, and 8.0) without running graphical applications. this is easily accomplished with a few perl scripts and an understanding of the files in /etc. to update all of our workstations i simplyt type:

    update.pl -t workstations -v

    and then i wait while my scripts update the eratta on the workstations. it took me a day or so to write the scripts which is easily scalable to a hundred or so machines. the benifit of not needing a gui is being able to update things when you're out of town over a 14.4 modem.

    And yes, with Linux, you have the source, so you could fix this yourself, right? Microsoft says this requires a large architectural changes. I think any person or group willing to re-architect NT4 or the 2.0 kernel would better spend their time and effort upgrading to a newer OS version.

    if i upgrade my linux kernel, it will probably run just fine on hardware from 1996. if i upgrade to windows 2000 or xp i would take a serious performance hit. this would require me to upgrade my hardware. this is a serious issue in my mind. microsoft touts their lower total cost of ownership and to estimate these costs customers include the use of the product for it's lifetime.

    for nt40 server the "end of life" is sometime in 2004. this is fine, and companies plan around these dates. companies that find out that the product they were going to phase out in 2004 has a vulnerability now and microsoft has no intention of fixing the problem might not be too happy.

    say you budgeted the upgrades for the first quarter of next year and find out you have to move that forward a couple quarters? this is not the type of thing to which business take kindly-especially in an unforgiving economy such as this. microsoft has an obligation to these companies, and i dont think it is unrealistic to hold them to this obligation.

    i believe ibm still has support contracts out (2004 i believe) for os/2 warp. i had a friend who worked at tivoli and he mentioned it to me. here is ibm's strategy for 2003. i believe os/2 warp 4 has been out since 1996.

    i used their instructions here:

    these are not the most comprehensive instructions, but after reading this page and looking at their scripts i was able to get it working.

    this gives me access to redhat's os, updates and freshrpm's rpms like the xmms stuff. it works really well. i'm using it to manage about 15 computers running redhat 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0.

    with some mucking around, you should be able to make other packages work with it.

    i dont think you can fault them for the mp3 thing. they really had no choice-it's quite unrealistic to expect them to pay a royalty each time someone downloads a product with an mp3 player. you should really write the fraunhofer institute for threatening to charge royalties for the player. redhat cannot afford (should not be expected) to deal with these legal issues.

    like you mentioned, you can use apt4rpm from fresh rpms. i would encourage you to do this. i set up my own repository and i'm really happy with this. i'm actually thinking about getting a membership to redhat-not so much to use their service, but as a way to thank them for providing me with a wonderful and inexpensive operating system.
