The sad part is that a large number of slashdotters will convince themselves that this type of thing is good despite the fact that the site is very clearly engaged in theft. For the umpteenth time, no. Not theft. Copyright violation, or 'piracy', the land-based kind, where nobody gets boarded, killed and thrown to the sharks. And at that, they are not engaged in 'piracy' either. They are at most 'enablers' or 'accomplices'.

Every once in a blue moon, some poor person dies because he or she didn't get out of the burning car because of the belt. Then someone will stand up and say "See? I don't use them and if they didn't, they'd live as well. I drive carefully, I don't get into accidents, so I don't need them!"

No. No no no. This would be similar to say, an airbag deploying (i.e. exploding in your face) when you turn on the radio.

    • A security system activates erroneously, there is no real threat present (turn on the radio).
    • The activation of the security system results in real damage (to your face).
    • The aftermath of the activation will cost a lot of time/money to recover (airbags are expensive to replace).
    Compare:
    • A security system activates erroneously, there is no real threat present (inocuous files classified as virus/trojan)
    • The activation of the security system results in real damage (the files are deleted).
    • The aftermath of the activation will cost a lot of time/money to recover (recover/reinstall will waste several hours of your time).
  5. Apples and oranges. on eBooks - What's Holding You Back? · · Score: 1
To me, and eBook is not a book. A book is not an archaic form of an eBook.

A book is a human-readable permanent way of fixing information. It has evolved from stone walls (Lascaux), clay (cuneiform tablets) and leather to cellulose. The next evolution will replace cellulose with some other permanent surface, hopefully made from less environment-impacting materials, immune to ageing yet easily wipeable/reusable.

An eBook is a rendering device. The permanent medium is either flash memory, magnetic platter or even dynamic memory. None of these are human-readable.

To me, an eBook is more similar to a television or a movie projector than to a book.
