  1. So, Mobile Phone carriers are profiting from robocalls? What's next, buying a door for your house and for an extra $4.99 a month they'll come to your home and prevent any unwanted intruders?

    Doesn't Amazon already offer that?

  2. How can app help with junk calls on my landline phone?

Newer ATT handsets offer "Smart Screening" which operates pretty much the same as having a silent ringtone. Any numbers or ID's you "allow" ring thru but all others hear a message that your calls are being screened. Callers not previously "allowed" are asked to state their name and press "1". If they do that then their call rings thru and you can then opt to answer or forward their call directly to the answering machine.

  3. Silent ringtone on Phone Carrier Apps Can Help Fight Robocalls -- Sometimes, Even For Free (cnn.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

A silent ringtone as the default also works, if you don't mind having to maintain your own "white-list" by assigning a differnt ringtone for those you want to hear from. Best of all, this approach is free.

  4. Has anyone else noticed something suspicious about the link supposedly pointing to the press release?

  5. It's already passe. The media uses AI as if it were just an acronym for "software".

  6. Re:Please don't on Apple Might Debut 3 New iPhones in 2019 (fortune.com) · · Score: 1

But it turns out you can buy everything from an iPhone 7 up! There's the 7, 7+, 8, 8+, XR, XS, and XS Max. And of course for each model there are the different size variants. And colour variants. So we had massive choice paralysis.

Must be a nightmare to go clothes shopping with you.

What is the best long term investment? It seems like if I buy a 7, it is going to be "obsolete" the soonest. But the X series start at AUD$1000 and that seems like a ludicrous amount for a non-power-user who is actually perfectly happy with her iPhone 5S.

AIEEE! Stop thinking of a phone (any brand) as an "investment" for CRIPES[sic] sake. It's an expense! There is no inherent ROI (look that up if you don't understand finance). Any phone only truly becomes "obsolete" when it stops working, i.e., stops doing what you bought it to do in the first place. On the other hand, if you simply must have the latest and greatest at all times then praise to you, brother. You're one of the drivers behind a strong economy.

It doesn't help that the media (and politicians) in their ignorance and quest for hyperbole have begun referring to anything done via software as AI.

Bears repeating: You will never automate _yourself_ out of a job.

Quitting seems like a Quixotic gesture.... just kinda delays the inevitable while they find a new engineer.

Au contraire! Didn't Edison get fired after "automating" his tasks as a telegrapher? And how many of us have found ways to make our own job easier thru a little self created automation? Only later to discover that started a spiral that led to elimination of the entire task (and position)? It's not always someone else's fault that work gets automated. When it happened to me my career took a new direction and it was actually beneficial.

Continuous loud noise makes people uncomfortable so they won't linger after finishing their meal which results in faster turnover and more customers seated.

We experienced a similar glitch at roughly the same time while watching the game on the Spectrum Channel on our Roku stick. The symptom in our case was the loss of video and presentation of a blue screen asking "Do you want to keep watching..." and a single button labeled "Keep Watching". Clicking the button restored the video immediately. Audio was never interrupted.
