  1. The only way Microsoft on Console Pricing Economics · · Score: 5, Interesting
can even remotely have a chance at competeing with Sony and Nintendo is to drop the price of XBox, right now, to $99.99. I know this may seem desperate at first, but I think Microsoft should be desperate. Gamecube at $149.00 is already stepping up the price wars, and while in theory XBox may be superior in hardware, the PS2 will probably be chosen over Xbox if one were to choose between the two solely on the game choice. For 99.99, a console with built in NIC, hard drive, optional DVD playback kit, and in game 5.1 surround, many would choose to limit themselves to XBox's mediocre game offering.

No I don't have any three of the consoles yet, but the choice of which to purchase is getting harder and harder...

Clarity and sharpness combined with THX sound and a huge screen make for a very entertaining 2 hours and 22 minutes. Taken from rscos.org frontpage:

If you're wondering what RISC OS is, you've come to the right place. This site is one of many such sites dedicated to sharing information, news and tutorials on using RISC OS.

RISC OS is a windows and mouse based operating system to compete with Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux in an increasingly computer-orientated world. The beauty of RISC OS though, is its sheer productivity and intuitiveness - making it rise above the alternatives.

Beginners and experts alike can immediately start to use RISC OS, even with little or no previous experience of computers. Soon users are finding out what all the excitement and enthusiasm is about. RISC OS is not just hype. It's the productive future of desktop computing.

Once you've used RISC OS for a few weeks you'll never want to go back to using alternative systems. Why not make a little effort to find out more? You'll be impressed.

How can an OS like this compete with OS's designed for a different architecture? Will I be able to walk into CompUSA and buy a PC with an ARM CPU in it? Will I be able to purchase a word processor for it? Or are we gonna have to start porting over our GNU GPL'd software over?

I'm being genuine, do they have some sort of game plan for this?

Everyone e-mail Ximian to develop an Exchange like server but only way better!

If this were the case I know I could convince at least two companies I work with to switch their environment to use Evolution/AbiWord/Gnumeric/Galeon/"Ximian Exchange". They would be windows free! I would however wait till they ported everything to Gnome 2 since they would be picky about antialiased fonts. Once these apps are ported to Gnome 2 and an Exchange Like server is built, theres no stopping corporations to switch over totally to an Linux/Gnome shop. It's gonna happen... just wait!

You'll still have to install X and apps and the kernel, but at least the base will be taken care of.

Switched to Gentoo 6 months ago from FreeBSD/Linux setup and haven't looked back since.

For the most part you only have to do it once. After that its pretty much minor upgrades here and there. Not much different than the time it takes using Debian and apt-get for upgrades.

I've dabbled in every possible Linux distribtution imaginable and have been using Gentoo exclusively for about 6 months now. I must say that I'm pretty sure I've settled on using Gentoo Linux as my sole distribution from now on. I've even gone ahead and put them on some production servers as well. Between portage and the ability to have a system that's totally optimized for your particular hardware is beyond perfection. This may not be a newbie distribution but for most hardcore Linux users and even those with some serious servers on hand, Gentoo takes the cake. The first time I tried Gentoo I was blown away at the clean file system, powerful portage system, and shear increase in speed that I had gained. If you give it a shot, you'll be hard pressed going back to another ditribution. I HIGHLY recommend giving it a shot. For those you go ahead and try it, don't be set back by the time it takes to install. It will take a while (I mean youre basically building the whole system from scratch) but it will be worth the wait. If for the speed alone.... it's great. Ok... I'm done plugging Gentoo (just a user, not part of the Gentoo team or anything). So give it a shot some weekend... if nothing else.... you'll learn a lot!
