I got hooked on "Space Above and Beyond"... canceled I then got hooked on "Earth 2"... canceled
I knew as soon as I got into Firefly that it would probably have the same ending. It seems the general population can't appreciate simple, innocent humor and are too impatient to let the characters develop. If the orginal Star Trek didn't have such a cult following I wouldn't have been surprised if TNG got canceled after the first season as well (which obviously turned out to be a great show !:)
Yet another sign of societies seemingly downward spiral... hopefully not I hope.
it actually isn't a bad PC notebook. First off compared to other notebooks, it has a nice form factor, good battery life, slot loading DVD/CD-RW combo, widescreen aspect ratio and both USB 2.0 and Firewire (unpowered though) ports. One of the few notebooks on the market now which combines all these features. Yes, most of the stuff was ripped off from the PowerBook, but if you're a PC zealot then it's worth looking into. The whole Porsche branding is merely a marketing tactic (I'm sure the real Porsche NOT the Astrian Porsche could have come up with a slicker design).
If it supports FreeBSD or Linux it's worth a look. It would have been nice if it used the ATI Mobile 9000 chipset instead of the Gefore 4 GO but...
I'd still probably rather get a real PowerBook though:)

LCD Round-up

Being a very satisfied owner of an NEC LCD (1500 series (1550M), same specs as the one mentioned in the parent besides being only 15") I can say without hesitation that it's well worth the extra $$$. Great display, no problems at all with games (running at the native resolution) and an absolute pleasure on the eyes, no strain at all and sitting in front of it for 8 hours straight if you have to is not a problem either. If you're not a heavy gamer I recommend getting the ones with the built in speakers, they sound great and save valuable desk space.
This is great and all but what about the software?

Another iPod Competitor

The reason iPod is such a great product is because it integrates perfectly with iTunes. Not only does the hardware interface become a pleasure to use but the software-hardware interface is seamless as well. The real question here is how well thought out is Creative PlayCenter 3. Assuming that Creative made the hardware intuitive AND made organizing/transfering your music to it just as good, then they may have something here, at least for PC users. God knows that the iPod for Windows and MusicMatch Jukebox is just embarassing to use.
What motivated you to pirate software? Was it just because you could? Or were you trying to make some sort of philosophical statement regarding commercial software and the like?
If you're reading this, chances are you're busy hacking away on your *nix workstation. I ask you to take a brief moment and step away from the cyber world, look outside and remember the tragedies that took place only one year ago. Never before in my lifetime have I witnessed an event that affected the entire planet in the way that 9-11 has. It doesn't matter what country you reside in or what your nationality is, most will remember the precise moment they first were made aware of what happened that tragic day. Our day to day struggles seem so small all of a sudden as we realize just how lucky we are to be living a life the way we choose to. History has shown just how precious freedom is and it is something we should never take for granted. No doubt life after 9-11 has changed but at the same time we should not let those few soulless beings who try to take our freedom away from us and then have the audacity to justify their horrific actions in the name of their own warped sense of religion, change the way we choose to lead our lives. In the grand scheme of things, our existence is a mere blip on the radar screen of the reality we live in, be sure that blip counts for something.
I think if they increased the form factor slightly so as to incoporate one agp slot, then they'd really have something. Stick in the latest Nvidia or ATI graphics card and you've got a full fledged PC. Or maybe I'm just talking about those Shuttle mini form factor PC's, though I think the Cappuccino with an AGP slot would still be smaller. Might have to stick in an extra fan though...
OK.... focusing on just the themes

KDE Gets The Hat

What RedHat did in the beta (null) was to unify Gnome 1, Gnome 2, KDE and xmms themes. Wasn't this precisely what ESR was saying? Actually it works quite well. The whole interface is slick and unified. Just swap RedHat's default icons for your favorites and you're golden.
I bought a Creative Labs Nomad II refurbed from Creatives website (no memory included). Plugged in a 128 MB CF Card. (Bought from pricewatch) Plugged the USB cable in. Loaded the software (command line only but a GUI is beta) get it here: http://nomadii.sourceforge.net/ And I was done! Couldn't be easier. Dare I say easier than windows? Bought it for jogging as well, must've dropped it half a dozen times. NO scratches and still works like it was new. Couldn't be happier. Good Luck!
I realize this is to provide for the third voltage but I hope the power cable will still be small. Don't want to end up using up the same amount of space as Parallel ATA and be back to square one.
The Unix servers took 17 hours to calculate how much cash the bank needed in reserve to offset its investment risk. The Linux servers made the same calculation in 11 minutes.
Does anyone else seem to think that maybe their old Unix servers were considerably slower than the new Linux servers they witched over to?
I'm not sure if this is a clinical fact, but for me personally, eating and coding doesn't work. My brain turns to mush and it's a distraction. In fact, I find I do my best coding on an empty stomach. On ocassion I'll have a jug of water handy, but other than that, for me food + code = more bugs than a Windoze OS.
OK, some valid points, but do you think that Sony will price the PS3 at $299 initially? With all those features I wouldn't be surprised if they price it at $499, which then makes the whole "upgrading every 4 years is cheaper than PC's" a mute point. Though if they do decide to price it competitevely, then I agree, upgradability becomes a non issue.
that until they design a system that is upgradable, consoles will NEVER be able to compete with PC's. Most computer users don't by a new PC every 4-5 years just to keep up with the latest technology. They upgrade their CPU next month, get a new video card in a year, and stick in a bigger hard drive when they need it. This way a user is always pretty much keeping in pace with technological advances without being left behind. With a console, unless I purchase one as soon as the new one comes out, I'm screwed. Obviously this is on purpose, but now that both Microsoft and Sony are shifting their focus to a Do-Everything box, they're going to have to implement upgradeability as well if they ever want to compete. Now the issue of using a low resolution TV-set for this will have to be tackled at a later date;-)
I've been a hard core Linux user for many years and do most of my development on Linux (usually GTK/Gnome) but I must admit that the whole.NET thing is quite impressive. I'm actually quite surprised by it. Microsoft has never been know to make huge leaps but.NET is a MAJOR one. It is similar to the leap Apple made when jumping to OSX from MacOS. OSX fixed many of the things wrong with MacOS and similarly.NET fixes almost all of the prior things wrong with not only web development, but development in general. I strongly urge Linux developers to push there pride aside and learn about one of the first true inovations coming from Redmond since the wheel mouse:-) Whether or not it is accepted is yet to be seen (though personally I think it will, especially with the MONO project developing so rapidly)
I built a dedicated box with a Celeron 333 and a Matrox G400 card with S-Video out just to stream my DiVx's to my TV set. Not so sure if testing this card on a Duron 600 constitutes a TRUE test of this cards capabilities.

It actually runs a modified version of WinCE. Whether or not this supports/refutes your argument, I'm not sure. Anyone else?

Yeah I know. The broken links are from http://www.freeos.com and I'm still in the process and re-finding everything.

Cheers!
Why is the link for "best distribution" linked to www.debian.org? I though Gentoo's site was www.gentoo.org?
hehe... noticed that as well... nothing to emerge as of yet. I'm sure Spider is hard at work with the ebuilds... soon I'm sure.
Just figured out every last thing I could about RC2 and now this. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
And off I go to "emerge gnome" (thanks gentoo)....
:-)
Third confirm... very nice... well done Xine devlopers!
