Do you think it's possible to package this in a PCMCIA card? Perhaps when Creative sees sales for this increase and realize that being able to take this on the road without the bulk would be a great boost for the road warrior. This would be the one time I wouldn't mind lugging around a dozen dongles either.
You have some valid points.... however I'll sacrifice one MB just so I'm able to listen to my music on my portable. I do believe however that it's simply a matter of time until Ogg Vorbis is supported by some upgraded firmware for some portable MP3 players (cough...nomad...cough....excuse me...). Until then however MP3 will continue to be dominant despite licensing issues... Hopefully when the day comes they'll be an easy way to convert my file server of MP3's to Ogg... please...

First of all I think youre smart enough to finish up your degree. After my last full semester I worked at a networking company with good pay but boring drab days. Knowing the economy was the way it was I kept applying for other IT related jobs anyway. I got some offers and took a leap of faith. It became the best decision I ever made. I am now working at a great company doing something that I truly believe in. I can directly see my efforts effects and have a great time all day. A dream? No. You MUST be willing to take chances and risks. Everyone thought I was crazy for switching jobs with a great salary during these times. But stick to your guns. The key is to believe in what youre doing. Only then will what you consider mundane now be exciting later. Good luck!
It always fascinates me, the hatred male trekkies have towards Wil Wheatons character. Now I think I understand why: I watched TNG during my early teens and I always envied his character, I would have killed to be in his characters situation! And I think thats where all this hatred comes from. Instead of looking like a dweeb, they express distaste for him. Also he basically portrayed most of our lives: An above average male teenager who was never appreciated for his abilites by his role models (Especially Picard). This kind of reminds me a bit of the whole Jar Jar thing...
If you're not man enough to admit your envy, then please don't try to satisfy your ego by expressing hate.
To Wes: Great job on TNG....wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
From an end user perspective... I agree. I was making that statement from the perspective of multiple machines. Most would not play Quake on their web server. But on the other hand it would be nice to browse the web with 100 % compatability (read Internet Explorer) and do a little programming with gcc at the same time without rebooting.
So the question is: Is it viable to have a single OS that will let me play the latest LOTR trailer as well as having 200K people hitting my web page while I recompile my latest and greatest take all or nothing killer app?
Only read if you completely understand the following rule.
I AM NOT TRYING TO START A FLAME WAR!!!
All will admit (ALL!) that Mandrake is the best of the lot. But for some reason I find Debian to be cleaner and quicker. But out of the box, Debian has no journaling fs support or support for my ATA100 card. Can this be done in Debian? Of coure. I don't think anything can not be done in Debian. But if I have to spend two days doing it.... then it just aint worth it. Hopefully SID release will resolve some of these issues, so for now....Mandrake it is.
It's alway this way. Mandrake has excellent hardware support, but it's loaded. Debian is clean...but less out of the box hardware support.
First I want to extend my deepest condolences to all who are directly affected by this tragedy.
I have a twelve year old brother who in his quest to be just like his older brother, has taken on a quite impressive knowledge of computers, networks and programming. I start to question myself that if in his child like curiosity had he done something similar, what would his emotional response be?
In 7th grade our class was introduced to the Basic programming language, an hour a week. Of course there being more kids than computers, I was one day assigned to the main server to use... go figure. As I worked on my assignment I mistyped a line number for a "goto" statement and inadvertantly created an endless loop. As can be forseen the server locked up and all kids were kicked out of their assignment. The teacher who had no idea what was going on assumed I did this on purpose. For the first time in my school career of being a straight A student, living up to my parents expectations, and fear of becoming less then the best, I got in serious trouble. Sitting in detention that day, I felt emotions that no 12 year old should feel. I had thoughts that not only scared me but would scare anyone else as well.
Do not blame the beautiful innocence of a childs curiosity.
Blame socities ignorance. The same soicety that does not realize the group of gifted children that are being brought up in this technologically advancing world. If we can not come to realize that the emotions of a child are amazingly fragile, we are doomed to repeat undeserved wrath upon them. This common thread also expands to the increase in school violence.
This is totally cool. Very nicely done. Would have never thought of using a webcam to determine the players light-sabre position. So when's the batleth (is that how you spell it?) version coming out (Klingon Trek Weapon for you non trekkers) ? I would kick some serious ass in that!
First let me say that Evolution is doing some great work. For all you people who compare it to Outlook....yes it is Outlook for Windows...but it's software like this that will attract "regular people" to Linux. We geeks will just sit back and use our Console Apps smurking every once in a while as another newbie enters our arena...even though they were attracted because they saw the screenshot of their Windows desktop that is actually stable. Who cares who uses Linux and why...as long as they are using it!
As much as I dislike the visual and programming aspects of Motif you must admit the guys right when he says every time a software application come out using Motif we don't hear about it. Why? Cause all the apps are hardcore apps like Data Aquisition, Medical apps, Graphics, Testing. I mean at work I pick up a magazine on test and mesaurments and every single screenshot of a myriad of apps are all Motif. I think it's cause Motif has a reputation and is tried and true. Slowly however companies are seeing the light and using Qt/Gtk....it'll take time guys. Hang in there!
I couldn't pass up a chance to put in my $.02 on a trek related post:
I am not a "trekkie". I do not know the internal schematics of the Enterprise by heart. I don't own any trek related memoriablia. I have watched numerous episodes of all 4 Treks.
Conclusion: The best series ever made for television, sci-fi related and otherwise is IMHO:
Star Trek: The Next Generation
The writers,actors/actresses,producers,(etc.) for this show produced one of the most entertaining and thought provoking series ever made.
I must say I had some serious doubts about this movie, particularly how the characters would be portrayed but I must say: Holy s*?t! So far this looks like an unbelievable production. As of now I say forget Ender's Game, Lara, Star Wars 2 and 3 and Matrix Sequels. I live for LOTR!!!
First of all just so you know where I'm coming from I'm not a Microsoft hater... they make some great pieces of software. But I do use Linux most of the time though.
However this page shows how scared they are of Linux.
I usually read these things knowing they are half truths but I see only one percent truth here.. journaling file system... which by the way I know will be remedied.

Just a thought.

This is absolutely great! A primo example that goes back to the roots of Slashdot.
Excellent link, great article.
Now where's my soldering gun?
:-)
Is it me or does that look like CTF-Lava to you?

I think a URL might be in order...no?
Cheers!
I think we can all admit this device rox.
So do we all:
(1) Go buy a mac and ipod and try to dual boot with yellowdog linux or...
(2) wait for someone to copycat it for the pc
I choose the latter...
cheers!

As yet to be seen....
This is just saying which OS has faster pipes:
Linux or Win2K
(We can eliminate IBM's so called XP comparison....doesn't seem to have much basis)
All IBM is saying is that if you have some specific app that absolutely needs to have best pipe speed/bandwidth then install LINUX damn it!
This is not:
Linux vs Windows
Linux is harder/easier than Windows
Linux Rox, Windows Sux
Windows Rox, Linux Sux
Tux smashes Windows, news at 11
Grow up people: When will people realize that there is not one defacto OS standard.
I love Linux
I love Windows
I use Linux for Web Server/FTP Server/IMAP server/DNS/filesharing/
I use Windows for browsing the web, playing games, Designing web pages, etc.
Why? Simply because I use the whatever works for whatever I need.
Why must we have one OS that does everything?
Seriosly.... if there is some solid reason please tell.
Just my 2 cents...

Kudos to the two best OS Dist available.

It was a simple fat fingered mistype...no biggy...
wow....thats embarrasing.... I meant donuts...gotta get some sleep....
Can it compete with Mindstorm?
(Can't tell....site slashdotted....must refresh till wee hours of night.....mmmmmm.....fresh dognuts.....)
First of: Condolences to all effected by this sensless tragedy. Our thoughts are with you all...
Second of: Thank you Slashdot for keeping us all informed. It means a lot to me and I know others as well.
Third of: Can we somehow create a Beuwolf Cluster to catch the bastards who did this ?
You must find humor in tragedy. Only then can we laugh in the face of the enemy.
Peace

If you take the virtual tour of Virtual PC on their main web site they pronounce Linux the BAAAADDD!!!! WAY!!! NoooooOOOOOooooOOOOOO!!!
As long as I can view it, it's good. Open Source is just icing on the cake... (a very unlikely icing at that)...
Same here... tomorrow?
