What CARP seeks to do is have a fee over and above that because users can capture the streams to a file and (theoretically) have a flawless reproduction of the original.
Unfortunately, CARP does not do anything to break out something for "non-flawless" broadcasts. I work on a four hour live streaming video show that uses music. We don't use full quality audio in the stream because of the video. However, we are still treated as if we are transmitting CD quality. No one could make a decent copy from the audio we send out. We don't mind paying a reasonable fee, like ASCAP/BMI/SESAC but CARP was horrid in both cost and reporting. Heck, ours is a totally donation funded show with no advertising. CARP would have been instant death for us. I am hoping for something a little more reasoned.
Uhhhhm, why wouldn't they be? Copyright is a governmental creation. It is part of the Constitution. Without this, there is no "Copyright." It is up to government, according to the Constitution, to set up the rules as to how copyright works. No government, no copyright.
my corporate investment group for voting yes on this merger. The company I work for had enough votes that if they had changed from yes to no, the merger would have failed. So, our yes vote is now going to cause us to throw away over $3M in work and planning on an imminent server and workstation rollout that now has to be canceled becuase of HP's planned elimination of Vectras and Netservers. Way to go guys. lets hear it for working together to cost the company money on both the investment side, when the merger tanks, and our own side in wasted R&D.:P
WEP is a problem as is all encryption. As far as IDing goes, My guess is that someone could modify the cards and router to do a CW ID at 20WPM every ten minutes. If you have a lot of cards, though, that would be a major disruption to the date flow.
The other thing to remember is that while the base may be souped up, ther remote also has to be souped up to be useful. Takes extra work to soup up a PCCard.
And this is someone who's supposed to be considered intelligent?
Intelligence has nothing to do with this. this is simply a case of a kid (yes, at 22 acting like this, still a kid) with no common sense. Something that is becoming more and more common these days. No one wants to take responisibility for anything. The father is an idiot in this case.
Maybe I am wrong. Maybe there is no more common sense. What use to be common is now uncommon. This is a case of being smart but not being taught how to use it.
they might as well kiss some of their largest customers goodbye. I know that my company is planning on purchasing about 100K new pc workstations over the next two years. They are also killing off MPE, which accounts for about 600 $250K and up systems that are going to be coming end of life in two years. I would suspect that without PC workstations, it would be better for us to package deal with IBM for workstations and AIX servers instead of only having HP her with HP-UX. I think HP would be wise to give Fiorina the boot. She has wrecked that company.
Not nessecarily true. I know in a lot of areas, you can sign up with Earthlink as the ISP for cable on a lot of TWC systems instead of RoadRunner. These services are slowly coming out. Plus, at least with Earthlink, you can do dial up away from home. A concept RR has never grasped.
Looking at the pictures, those were just standard moving boxes. Most of the time, they don't have the burst strength to ship computer products. I have rarely had problems shipping equipment anywhere becuase I keep the original boxes and shipping materials in storage. You will notice that most of your boxes that computer equipment comes in are much sturdier then your average box from Uhaul. Uhaul boxes are great for clothes, that is about it.
I think the EU has been sitting on the sideline waiting to see what happens. I wonder if they will get more involved now that DOJ is dropping the ball.
It was another crap science project that was a waste of money. For its extra cost, it did not accomplish much that could not be done in other ways that were cheaper and already exist.
This project was being done for the "gee whizz, neato" factor. Not sound science. I am glad to see it mothballed. Give me a project like Genesis anyday over pieces of crap like Triana.
My main suggestion would be to remap your server to look at port 8080 or something like that. Since it is personal use and you probably only give it to a few folks, adding:8080 at the end of the url should not be that big of a problem and it bypasses the port 80 block.
Three months?!?!?! Yeesh, If I had gone that long, I would have been at the CO with an axe and garden shears demanding action or their fibers were going down!
Actually, I give the phone campany a reasonable time [three days, four if it is a weekend or holiday] then I would be camping in their office. Of course, i deal with them all the time, so i know the only way they will ever do anything is if you make yourself the biggest pain in the butt possible.
As an aside, I do not like the direction of mega companies controlling all access. I will go with the little guys and spend more money as long as I can. After they are gone, I have no idea what I will do.
I don't think the 5 WPM code test is that big of a deal. I am a no-code tech right now; but, learning code is something that is worthwhile. When all forms of communication aren't working, CW is the way to go. I am actually hoping to be able to get up to 20 wpm if I have time.
Now, should the restrictions on HF be lessened for no code. I don't think it would hurt. I would open up limited space for non-code; but still leave most of it for those with CW as incentive to learn.
Nothing new here. It is a new way of funneling the lemmmings, errr, public down another chute to the trough. The public has been so ingrained on 'brand names' that something not a brand name is not where they will go. The majority of the public is not cynical enough with the big media corporations to want to go elsewhere.
I am guilty of it too. I hit CNN a couple of times a day, in spite of other sources being available.
I should mention that I am refering to the situation from a strictly US attitude. I do not know how the situation is in other parts of the globe.
Having been on mucks, including Furrymuck, for some time, I just enjoy the creativity of things. I've tried some of the graphical systems to bide the time. They don't do it for me. IRC is ok for good ole chatting; but I do like the feeps of a muck. Where else can you order a 30" Pizza with roast rabbit and rat toppings and eat it in three bites.;)
Oh and congrats to the FM wizzes and Revar, its nice to have a system that can have over 500 players and minimal lag.
Give me a telnet terminal and a keyboard to steer it by and my mind can go anywhere.
There is absolutely no reason not to use a simple scantron. In my district we used the "connect the arrow" ballot. Simple. Hole punching and loosely hanging chad is a recipie for disaster.
Unfortunately, there is a reason. It's called money. I live in Osceola County, Florida. I know that I had asked the elections office after an earlier election why they were using a punch card system. The response I recieved, same response a lot of the media has gotten, the county can not afford the couple of million dollars to upgrade the voting equipment.
Granted, Osceola is a small county compared to the others in this mess. I am not sure why Palm Beach county can't or won't change. However, Volusia county shows even the scantrons aren't infallible. One precicnt had a problem with the scanner and could not get through too the tech desk because of the volume of calls. They had an emergency bin that filled up, so she did the only thing she knew how, cycled power. Guess what, it last the records of the 300 or so ballots that had already been scanned. It would have been caught and corrected later; but even the scantrons are not perfect.
Money is probably the biggest issue to upgrading these systems. It always will be.
the ballot was that way because the old folks complained in the first place that they couldn't read the standard font
It makes sense, but do you have proof on that statement?
I do not have actual proof I can refer to. I have heard it mentioned in various news reports and it does make sense for the area. I belive it was initially mentioned that it was this way by the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections.
The loser has to do what Nixon did with Kennedy
You mean Kill the winner?
Do you have proof?;)
As for the rest of your statements:
I regret you have to stoop to the Nazi card when I was clearly being a bit sarcastic. I was never commenting on them being stupid or not voting. They have every right to vote. Simple act is, there will still be people who screw up the ballot. If you think there was some big conspiracy on behalf of Bush's younger brother to screw this vote, I feel sorry for your poor deluded soul. These problems happen with every election in every place in this country. I have nothing against the folks who had their votes messed up. Do I think they should have done a better job of checking, yes. Do I think that folks need to be more responsible for themselves when they vote, yes. Should the poll workers have been better educated, yes. There are a lot of shoulda coulda wouldas.
To redo the election over a case of voter error, not fraud, is a major mistake. If they push for a new election in Florida, the other side will push for new elections in other states. Soon we will have to do the entire election again. The new president will not be in place for months. the legal wrangling will go on forever. It is just not a good idea for the country to push this issue and cause upheaval. Fix the problems. Don't let them happen again. The world is not going to end if Bush is president, nor will it end if Gore is president. Either way, there will be an air of illegitmacy. Plus, I dare say that such a redo of an election would be the most bitter, distasteful and disruptive event in the history of politics for years to come. Rifts will occur in the American people that may take generations to heal. It is not worth the risk over what is really simple voter error. Costly voter error but still just voter error.
Think about what I am saying. This is out of no bitterness to anyone; just simple instincts. A revote in Florida and/or anywhere else in this country, on this election, would be the most devisive event in American politcs since the Civil War. I plead to the loser that he just request another recount if he wishes; but accept that as final for the good of this country. Try again in four years.
Revote those countys. having the whole state of Florida revote is expensive for the voters. If Only 18K or so votes are in question lets eliminate uncertainty. Revote those countys! Isn't this the most fair?
Revoting just the county is very unfair. It gives them an extra chance to show up once they know the outcome elsewhere. The only fair thing to do is to revote the entire state. That brings up the question, is it fair for the rest of the country?
The whole idea of a revote is very very dangerous in this case. It is not a local election for you county commisioner. It is for the "leader of the free world."
Cost is not an objective in this. It really should not be revoted at all. A revote would be a hellish nasty process that would only serve to divide the country evn more than it already is.
This issue should be dropped for the good of the country. Just as Nixon did with Kennedy.
Whoever loses in Florida, Bush or Gore, should either just request one more recount or let things stand. To fight over this idiocy in Palm Beach is lunacy! One, the ballot was that way because the old folks complained in the first place that they couldn't read the standard font. Two, voting correctly is a PERSONAL RESPONISIBILITY! Three, these same old people would have a fit if the county tried to raise their taxes to buy new voting equipment they could use. Finally four, they would still figure out a way to mess it up!
If you call a new election in Palm Beach, you have to do it for the entire state do to the way things happened. It would take at least a month of court wrangling and at least another month to get things together. Can you say Constitutional Crisis????? There is no way this could be settled intime for the inaguaration.
The loser has to do what Nixon did with Kennedy and accept defeat with grace. Nixon could have pushed the issue against Kennedy. However, he understood that for the good of the nation, the right thing to do was step aside.
I can not imagine the chaos if an new election is called. I have even heard scenarios that put Sen Strom Thurmond in as an interm President. Do we REALLY want to go through this becuase some old folks did not take the proper time and effort in the voting booth to verify their selection??
This is bigger than a "confusing ballot" Besides, I looked at the picture of the ballot in the voting machine on CNN. It is only confusing if you do not read it carefully.
For the good of the country and the world, DROP THE IDIOCY!

I know it is early; but if this turns out to be Bin Laden, the US should give Afghanistan an ultimatum:
Give us Bin Laden in 24 hours or we oficially issue a Declaration of War and us ALL of our weapons available
Radical, yes? Emotional, yes? It is time to screw politics and use some brute force.
I think the EU has been sitting on the sideline waiting to see what happens. I wonder if they will get more involved now that DOJ is dropping the ball.
