Agreed re cable TV. I need to wean my wife from a few cable-only shows, then we'll have Internet and over-the-air TV with a two-tuner media PC behind the TV and a wireless keyboard to control it. Savings? Maybe $75/month. would be more except for the damn bundling crap the cable/ISP providers insist on. Damn thieves. $75 for fairly quick Internet alone, with all the crap they load on it. I don't *need* tech support and their email and "webspace." Give me a connection, keep it working, and leave me alone. Bet they could charge me $20/month and make money. (mutter mutter mutter)
I did not make this video nor did I choose its subject matter. All I did was edit it & write the intro paragraph. Some may have noticed that the Cryonics Institute is a non-profit, and may realize that we do *not* take money to make videos unless said videos are clearly marked "advertisement" or "sponsored content" or something along those lines. Like these: http://tv.slashdot.org/sponsored/ See? A "sponsored video" section.
And yes, for those who don't know, I was the editor in chief of the company that owned Slashdot for many years, and -- my low 3-digit UID hints at this -- I was reading and posting on Slashdot before it was corporatized, and did my best for a long time to (sigh) keep the marketing types from messing the site up.
I retired in 2008. Now I collect SSI (I had several massive heart attacks) and work part-time doing Slashdot video work, plus I write a weekly column called Cheap Computing for TechTarget -- http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/cheap-computing/ -- and occasional blog posts for AllLEDLighting.com -- http://www.allledlighting.com/ --and other specialized, tech-oriented websites.
If you want to blame me for... well, for anything... no problem. I can handle it. I'm not in a management position, so saying bad things to or about me won't change anything. In fact, it's possible that I agree with many of your complaints but don't have the power to do anything about them.
And that said, now it's time for a gin and tonic here on Florida's West coast.:)
"Also roblimo and his slashvertisements are all so blatant, it's insulting."
I don't mind if you want to blame me for everything wrong with the world, including/. videos and posts you don't like. After having worked on Slashdot most of the time since 1999, my skin is so thick that nothing you say is going to bother me.
It's better for you to blame me than someone who might be more easily offended, so please keep it up.:)
All tech holsters look like they were made by the Dork Brothers, AKA the guys who design bicycle helmets. So forget holsters. And we won't even talk about fanny packs. Barf. I carry a small over-the-shoulder "messenger-style" laptop case that happily holds my little 11.5" subnotebook, my smarty-pants phone, some odds and ends, and my.22 pistol (along with a couple of extra magazines).
I had a heart attack on Mar. 1, 2010. I stayed conscious, although in heavy pain. Got stents put in, was sent home on Mar. 4... and had congestive heart failure about 6 hours after I was out of the hospital. This time, my heart just plain stopped. I was dead. EMS dudes shocked me back to life and got me to the hospital where I was treated. I obviously survived.
But I was dead for between 3 and 4 minutes before the EMS crew got to me. No breathing, no heartbeat.
White lights and tunnels? No. Everything faded to black. That was it. Nothing to see, nothing to hear. No gods or angels. Just... nothing.
No problem if you're homeless, but if you want to live indoors, maybe because you have computers and such, $$$$ like crazy. Might as well live in San Franci$co.
So only hippies, new age types, and open source developers with trust funds can live in Santa Cruz.
Nothing new - I remember it as a richie haven back in the 1970s.
I always liked Searunner trimarians, but not enough to live near their factory.
I thought Santa Cruz had already become not just the dope-smoking, tie-died place it always was, but also "a Haven For Hackers, Makers & Startups," overseen by the King Hacker, Maker, & Starter-Upper, Steve Wozniak.
Please activate sense of humor. I started with "reams," realized that Declan write on the Internet, not paper. Therefore, pixels. Almost typed billion. Silly description of of "a whole bunch" either way.
If you want the look & feel of Windows 7, 95, (shudder) Vista, or even 3.1 or something custom you make up, download Classic Shell - http://www.classicshell.net/ - and you will have more control over Windows than you've ever had.

You youngies need to get big old "daddy chairs" like us old guys have. And big TVs. And cute wives. Ahh..... life is GOOD!
That's easy to fix, but so far the Florida legislature hasn't passed my bill declaring all loud vehicles pistol & riflery targets.

Good catch. Fixed. Thank you.

Thanks for noticing the typo. Aug. 9.
WHAT? California is going to get cold and snowy?
I hope that doesn't happen in Florida, too.
Only problem = crazy cost of living. Look at these rents: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/apa/

And beaches? So. Calif. has WAY better beaches.

"Hide/Show Transcript" - right below the video.
Read a recent best-seller thriller or crime novel. It follows the same formula.
Sad, isn't it?

Wouldn't that make it an assault keyboard or laptop or whatever?
Note that this is Polk County, Florida. Out there they believe the earth is 6000 years old and that The Flintstones was a documentary.
(I live one jurisdiction West, in Manatee County. We win't brilliant here, but most of us understand evolution and stuff like that.)
"If Linux's foaming-at-the-mouth zealots harm the adoption of Linux, why don't leftism's zealots harm the adoption of leftism?"
They do.
$20 or less at Home Depot will buy you everything you need to make a .410 or 12 ga. shotgun. No machining required, either.
http://www.masterlock.com/products/product_details/99DSPT = the kind of gun lock I have. Fits both pistols and rifles, almost any caliber.
Many companies make these locks, and they are available from almost all gun stores except possibly the Weapon Shops of Isher,
Before I shoot either my pistol or my rifle I say, "Hi. It's me."
Once in a while I take a friend or young relative to the range with me. When I do that, I make appropriate introductions:
"Chuck, this is a a Merlin 795 rifle."
"Rifle, this is Chuck. He's an approved person."
I also have simple, cheap mechanical locks for my guns.
All I need, methinks.
I have no children in my house unless grandchildren are visiting from out of state. When they're here, my guns are locked.
The idea of adding some sort of uP device to my $150 .22 pistol is a laugh.
Are you going to pay for it?
If not, my $10 through-the-magazine-well lock will have to do.
