Ask Slashdot: Is There a Good Device Holster?
gurps_npc writes "I have seen several technology holsters. There are a lot of good ones for cell phones, but I am looking for something larger — for a tablet (Nook/Kindle/Nexus/iPad). There is, however, a direct trade-off between being discreet and having decent carrying capacity. Has anyone found an ideal balance? I would love to hear from people with direct experience. Do you look like the worst kind of geek hipster while wearing it? Any feature I should look for? I found one from a company called techslinger, but it looks a bit too geeky for me (double-sided makes it really stand out)."
Good news, you won't have to worry about looking like a hipster at all. You will however, look like the worst kind of utility belt nerd, and there's no getting around it.
I put all my devices in my pants so it looks like I have a really big genitals. All the hot women want a piece of the action! I reccommend it. I am 100% percent serial.

Just put it in your underpants
When I was travelling around Europe, for getting through airports I sewed my own leg-webbing for my phone and it's accessories out of black canvas. It wound up being very low profile since I wear black cargo pants normally, but was much easier to take off quickly in airports (and kept everything spread out for X-ray scanners) and allowed me to keep my phone much higher and closer to my belt (which was great for making sure I had my phone on me and keeping it easy to keep an eye on).
Carrying a tablet the same way could probably be done pretty discreetly - a 7" tablet would easily fit along the space of one's thigh without standing out at all. But I seriously doubt you'll find anything to buy - break out the sewing the machine and see what you come up with is my recommendation.
If you need to carry around stuff that does not fit nicely in a pocket, get a purse. I understand the attraction of slinging out your tablet with lightning speed. But really, despite our male need to have tools right where and when need them (it is both genetic and cultural, I guess), unless you need your other hand to hang on to your other tools (or a branch), a purse is really way more convenient for carrying around bulkier stuff.
To holster your equipment I recommend a jockstrap or brassiere.
Unless you are built like a low-poly linebacker, there isn't anywhere on your torso where something as large as a tablet won't rest awkwardly with at least one protruding corner, unless you wear a McMurdo-grade winter jacket at all times.
Since you can't hide something of that size, you might as well go with a small messenger bag, which will have the same capacity as a very large holster; but won't look utterly ridiculous.
They even have ones specifically for tablets.
BDU cargo pants might work for a small tablet. People sometimes associate cargo pants with graffiti artists.
This is a true scene from the early 2000's when I was involved in some Linux conferences as a speaker...
Imagine if you will a white male, late teens/early twenties. Full length leather jacking swaying as he walks the floor. His sunglasses obscuring where he is looking. He is clearly carrying something under the leather jacket, but you can't quite see what it is...
Something catches his attention from across the floor. Quickly he moves across the aisle, his jacket and whatever is underneath following a split second later, the inertia of something heavy slowing it down. He walks across to a booth, and nervously asks a question or two. He looks agitated and frustrated. He adjusts his glasses reaches under his jacket and pulls out... His laptop.
I think it was LinuxWorld in 2000. There was a guy that had all his gadgets attached to cables under a full length Morpheus-style jacket. I swear, everything up above is true (well maybe not the agitated and frustrated part).
I can't quite recall if his sunglasses where nose-clip glasses...
All tech holsters look like they were made by the Dork Brothers, AKA the guys who design bicycle helmets. So forget holsters. And we won't even talk about fanny packs. Barf. I carry a small over-the-shoulder "messenger-style" laptop case that happily holds my little 11.5" subnotebook, my smarty-pants phone, some odds and ends, and my .22 pistol (along with a couple of extra magazines).
After looking at the Techslinger, I recognized it from the Missionary Training Center (30-some-odd years ago, next to BYU), they used to sell something like those in the missionary book store to stash our Books of Mormon, so we could always be ready with one! I kept it for years after my mission to Belgium before finally passing it along to one of my kids who thought it was cool. The only difference was that it was a zipper pouch, like an over-sized vinyl bank bag. (We also stashed our brochures in them.) The downside is that you always have to wear a coat or vest, even today, unless you want to start a trend somehow. The ones they sold us were inexpensive, though, made with simple straps and Velcro. Gosh, this brings back memories. (Those were the days when I was a true believer!)
This was an option, unfortunately the project is over. You might be able to get one by emailing them directly.. or you could use it as a model to make your own.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen something like this IRL yet, but I really like the idea. So much so, that if I ever get a tablet in about that profile size, I plan to have a friend make one for me with her industrial sewing machine.

That's a screenshot from an animation set in the near-future. I don't have time to hunt down a more closeup shot, but essentially its sewn from leather, and holds the tablet in the small of your back. Secured by one of those hardened plastic speed-screws with a metal threading inset.
They are all about concealed carry. They should have a good opening into diversifying into the personal electronic device carry market.
Not that their business isn't already booming.
It's called a purse.
I have a ton of gadgets I carry around and the best solution, well for me anyway is a backpack. You can get some really well designed backpacks now for holding your gadgets and some even have front storage compartments for mobiles etc.
I have never, ever, ever looked at a person with a device holster, and not thought that they looked silly. Be it for your phone, tablet, or otherwise, device holsters are the crocs of technical accessories.
Give me a bike helmet with lots of vents.

Well, let me tell you from experience you want a leather one, not nylon. Those things chafe like you would not believe. Also, dual "device" holsters are not really practical... they're unwieldy, don't do the job, and often the device pops out which can be really frustrating.
Now, a lot of people here have mentioned size. This is an important consideration -- If you're going for a 10 or 12 inch device, you may find that the holster sags, and it can be very hard to get the device in. Something of a more manageable size, say 5 to 7 inches, gets the job done just as well, it's more practical, and it won't feel nearly as awkward walking around in public with.

I've got several pairs of shorts and pants that could easily handle a 7" tablet.
Either go with pants/shorts with large thigh pockets, or else a small bag. Those holsters all look dorky, especially if you plan on wearing them in the summer with no jacket to hide them.
you look like a nork. That is 1/4 nerd and 3/4 dork. I'd rather work in marketing for the rest of my life than be seen here on the streets with such a thing.

On a more serious note, if you even wonder about wearing a holster for anything but a gun, you are a nerd, you will look like a nerd even in the best suit dressed by the hippest person in the world. You are Duane Dibbley, don't fight it. Let the nerd flow through you.

If it doesn't fit in your pocket, it's too big to carry.
Unless it's part of your job and you're looking for some sort of tech tool belt.
Katana Space.
Thinkgeek has a totally geeky side-holster that has potential. http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/c616/ It's about as subtle as a black toolbelt can be, but it's not as bad looking as a fanny pack, it fits common devices, and it's relatively ergonomic (moves with you and doesn't bounce around). It also has the advanatage of NOT looking like a shoulder holster under a jacket and getting you shot by a mall cop when you have the urge for Angry Birds. The downside is Thinkgeek's sizing for the holster is complete nonsense; it says it fits up to a 43in waist, but fully extended it just barely fits my kid with a 32in waist. And I STILL had to buy extra nylon webbing and clips to make an extension to get the thigh strap to work (so your iplop or phablet don't go flying out). So if you're no bigger than a US men's medium, this is a pretty nice option.
YMMV.
I think not...(*poof*)
I think what you're looking for is a purse. Pick a design and a colour and own it.

The linked website sells single holsters, if that floats your boat, so not sure how far down the person read in the first instance.
Good cargo pants, like vintage paratrooper pants or LA police gear ones (the latter have pockets inside cargo pockets, but I don't like the material as much).
I buy those, have them cut down to shorts length; pocket fits 7" tablet with room to spare, with one button buttoned it is both easy to take out and hard to drop if you don't run, with both buttons on I ran and biked for many miles with it, bulletproof. Also fits bottles, cameras, baseball caps, plus there're two small bottom pockets.
Unless you are carrying a 10" device then many bum bags will suffice. If you are worried about someone cutting the strap then consider a pacsafe.
...a full-size iPad will fit in the back pocket of 5.11 Tactical cargo pants. 5.11s, in any size, are designed to have the largest back pockets possible.
I've lost a lot of weight and this trick no longer works for me...but I don't mind at all.
I've been very happy with sfbags.com in the past. They also do custom work.
It's the only viable solution I've seen so far:
http://www.scottevest.com/
I've been wanting to get one for months, but TBH I'm a bit afraid it'll cost me twice as much here in Germany (with shipping and taxes)...
... I can't even think why you'd want to "holster" a tablet... but for a very discreet tablet shoulder/messenger style bag try find a shop with the now discontinued smaller Crumpler "Herbas" it has no padding but will protect from scratches and minor bumps.
however given everyone, including the management suits seems to carry some sort of backpack/laptop/camera/carryon bag these days having a discreet bag is so different it's almost indiscreet.
Lots of large pockets, maybe they are large enough ?

Ok, this may sound very hipster, but I know a bag-maker/leatherworker and got myself a custom-made bag for my macbook air which cost me not even a hundred bucks (and no, I am not a mac lover, at the time there was just no other decent ultrabook). So if you know people like that help out their business and get something unique!
Pricy but may be what you are looking for urbantool.com
I moved from nerdy bat-belt over backpack to handbag for my EDCs. Seriously: Get a top-notch handbag or small messenger bag. Crumpler is good ... allthough I just see the german collection is by orders of magnitude better than the US one (???) - don't know what to make of that (Link is to the German collection with english copytext).
Another one, Freitag, is über-hip in Europe right now - they direct-recycle truck tarps, wasch them with rain-water and sow them into individual grungy cyberpunk-style pockets and bags. Entirely swiss-made btw. Sturdy, practical and very cool and fashionable. Popular with girls and guys alike over here. Cost a small fortune, but guaranteed no sweat shop work and about the most envionmentaly friendly you can get. ... A Freitag probably is going to be my next.
Not having my gadgets on me all the time in my bat-belt made me a more sociable person for that simple reason. You look cooler and you feel better not lugging your toolkit around with you all the time.
Bottom line: Ditch the bat-belt syndrome and get a neat rugged modern bag for your EDC - once you've gone through the initial withdrawal you'll feel much better. :-)
My 2 cents.
We suffer more in our imagination than in reality. - Seneca
Get a bag they are easier, you are not adversiting what you are carring and you can carry extra items.
I have been using a bag from pacsafe, https://www.pacsafe.com/ for a while and it works great for all electronics.
The main benefit of pacsafe is they are design primarily to prevent thieft, so they have wire mesh sewn into the bottom, straps have a metal core, items can be locked down, etc. They also have version with RFID shielding. Another benefit at being over 2 meters the straps are long.
Forehead and crazy glue, then turn the camera on, so that forward vision works.
If one wears a large phone, let alone a tablet, on one's belt one is going to look like a dork. You are better off getting a bag of some sort. It won't matter if it is a man bag, a messenger bag, a backpack, a laptop bag, or a briefcase, you are better off getting a bag. Now, if you or someone you know does leather craft, Tandy Leather Factory has two kits, one for a "vertical messenger bag" and one for an "expedition brief case". Of course, if you have the money, you can always check the Saddleback Leather Company.
There is no "-1 offended" or "-1 you don't agree with me" mod options for a reason.
A jacket or coat with large interior pockets is usually enough for carrying 7" tablets, kindles and so on.
Just get a bag. Backpack or sling-type bag, depending on preference. Don't use belt pouches or anything like that. Ever. It doesn't make you look like a geek or hipster, it makes you look like an idiot. It's like having a bluetooth phone thing on your ear. Sure if you can strap a thing to your body under a jacket like a gun holster that is probably a good thing, it won't attract pickpockets and you won't have to carry a bag. But then you can't take yuor jacket off without looking like an idiot.
Embrace it. Use it. Love it.
That's a large pocket at the back of your jacket, hidden in the inside.
Very easy to sew one in yourself...do a few jackets...
Put some elastic at the top to stop the pocket mouth gaping, and hold the pad.
Works well for me.
Don't sit back against something hard, though, or you either smash the pad, your back, or both.
I would not suggest using a purse, since as you are probably not used to carrying one, you are likely to forget it...
Make sure you pack a mankini in that murse!
Your moms mouth
I prefer the desantis sof-tuck. Oh wait for a tablet, why the hell would you want to do that?
A shirt pocket with iPad clip as well as pen clip. The pocket made need to be embiggened though.
By good technology holsers for phones, are you refferring to these?
Because anything else will make you look like a dork.
It seems that Batman had it figured out quite well. Forget tablet, he stored a chunk of Kryponite on his belt. Along with enough batrangs to win a small war. And cuffs. And rope shooters. And who knows what else.
Just google ipad-jacket, there are multiple companies creating these, some of them even have also a notebook pocket in the back additional to pads, phones, navis and another dozen pockets.
I've one with a mesh pocket interiors, where you can see the messages you receive on your devices just by taking a peek without havind to take it out of the pocket.
Seriously, holsters? What device is so necessary that it warrants a holster? Guns. And only if you're an officer, bodyguard, criminal, or price-labeler at a retail store.
Holsters are for quick access, but aren't exactly fashion statements. That said, if you're hell bent on projecting your utter disregard for social norms, I'd suggest going all out. A utility codpiece, complete with fingerprint recognition to release your tool and an alarm siren in case of unauthorized access (will automatically go off in the rare and likely accidental case of contact with the opposite sex). Tagline "Be a tool. Keep your tool, near your tool"
While projecting your social ineptitude, I suggest wearing white tube socks, and your most comfortable pair of Crocs. A good pair of sweatpants, preferably your mom's that have Juicy written prominently across the ass in 144 point font (actually seen at an airport on a lady who was twice as wide as tall), and either a South Park or obscure anime reference t-shirt available regularly at shirt.woot.com. A Warcraft tattoo on your arm, just barely visible at the hemline of your sleeve, announcing your allegiance to your favorite guild will complete the look.
Otherwise go for a messenger bag. Freitag for example is damn trendy, semi-customizable, and near indestructible. J-Fold canvas bags are good too. Timbuk2 works but is a bit passé now that every yuppie has one (or in my case 3, and a bicycle pouch).
I use a pair of timberland cargo pants. http://shop.timberland.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13069437 The side pockets with a minor modification (use a small knife to cut the threads holding one side bunched together) will hold a full size ipad in case inside the pocket.
It's a gun. It maims/injures/kills people. People are adverse to taking the piss out things that can hurt them.
My advice, go around attacking people with your tablet. I'd recommend hard strikes to the face with the flat of the device. once they're on the floor, holding the device firmly in both hands, bring it down so as to catch them with the edge of it. If you get lucky this could result in a decapitation.
After a few attacks (and associated press coverage) your device should have a rep for being a dangerous weapon and you'll be able to wear whatever holster you choose free from others condescending remarks.
Enjoy!
The OP said he/she is worried about standing out.
A lunchbox might also do the job.
Make sure to get one that matches your Fedora and trench coat. Surely a color that doesn't clash with your magnificent neckbeard wouldn't hurt either.
Didn't we learn anything in school? The taunting? The wedgies? The snapped slide rule?

a leg pouch. has a waistband, then clips around your thigh. really good for first aid kits etc.

They have large pockets and are not form fitting, so the tablet will not stand out as much as if it were in a pair of pants.
Good grief... I strongly suspect that the guy was making a joke, and that he didn't *actually* want to say "c**tbag". :-)

You mean a purse? Calling it a "holster" does not make it more manly as it is not a handgun.
Oh and the answer is probably no. I refer you to Betteridge's Law of Headlines.

Any Utilikilt other than the "new original" has huge pockets which hang down and to the front. I keep my (2nd-gen) Nexus 7 (the 1st-gen was a little wider, and fit in the pockets but not as easily), cell phone, and external battery in a single side/front pocket.
Come on, stop worrying about this. If you like something, if it suits your purposes then use it. If somebody else doesn't like it they can kiss your ass. Everybody has some sort of gadget they want to carry around these days. We need a good way to carry them. Eventually people will just wear the holsters, fanny packs, cargo pants, etc that they need to do so and won't feel embarassed because everyone else is too. Then we will all realize that it really doesn't look that bad anyway. People just think it does now because somebody told them so. That you even asked this question shows you can think for yourself.
Disclaimer... I am married. I have a child. I don't need to attract anyone now.
I once had a group of guys approach me in the middle of the night that I am pretty sure were going to mug me. I had a handheld ham radio in my pocket. Instinctively I put my hand in that pocket because it was by far the most valuable thing on me. That was a bad idea I know as it would just bring attention to what I didn't want them to get but I did it before thinking. This worked out well as when I did it made the antenna push outward against the inside of my jacket. One of the guys thought it was a gun and they all left. I stopped taking night time walks in that neighborhood.
If pockets are a problem, get a good sporran. Shopping.google.com Sporrans . There are modern style, steam punk, classic, furry....

The TechSlinger is THE BEST product on the market for what you are looking for! They just came out with a single sided holster in a variety of sizes. I would highly recommend contacting them. Their customer service is superb and they will do what ever they can to help. The TechSlinger is very comfortable to wear and hides nicely under a jacket. It makes going through airport security a breeze too since all you have to do is slide the holster off and place it in the bin and pick it up in one piece on the other side and keep moving. It may appear dorky at first but once you start wearing and become comfortable with it you'll forget all about the dorkiness. I HIGHLY recommend contacting TechSlinger. You won't be disappointed! This is a great well crafted product and the company is awesome!

No, there isn't.
I use a crosspaq which is basically like the sashes the Klingons used to wear in Stsr Trek. I love it and it doesn't look as stupid as a fanny pack.
I think you need to get away from the "holster" idea. Even my Galaxy S4 in a holster is a bit too big for belt mount and frequently gets in the way.
I think you'd be better served with a small bag.

I found a light weight vest with an inside pocket big enough for a kindle. I keep my cell phone in the opposite pocket for balance. The side pockets of a suit coat works for 7" tablets.
Bottom line, either you use a tablet for work or you don't, either the tablet is filled with propritary or sensative information you can't loose. It may not be easy for some to step back and realize that even they are using mobile devices at a ever increasing rate and that we are going to live a far more integrated life with our tech. Face the horror and be assimilated.
Get a nice leather satchel.
...and while you're at it, retire your sneakers and get a nice pair of leather shoes as well. If you're feeling REALLY crazy get a leather belt and have it match your new shoes.

Personally, I'd go for the shoulder strap holster. Do it to it.
its called a pocket. they usually have them one on each leg on the front side of pants. some ven have 2 on the back side as well!
I've been thinking about using a fly-fishing vest I have in the basement while traveling. Most of them even have a giant single pocket in the pack that would fit a tablet a small laptop or whatever else. Still slightly dorky, but at least you're not trying to conceal the fact you just need more pockets than what your pants can offer you. I tend to need more than two pockets anyway. I don't want my keys in the same pocket as my phone. I don't want money with my keys. You get the idea. Plus, you can take it off and slap it on the x-ray conveyor without having to unload everything.
I'd go with a cool, black leather satchel, just big enough for it, with handle and shoulder strap.
Women don't use black leather purses.

I haven't thought of anything clever to put here, but then again most of you haven't either.
Just get a big purse, or if your male a man bag.
Basically a bag with a shoulder strap.
I mean, you only look like a dork with a man bag, with a tablet attached via straps to your body you look like a full on social outcast.
My wife has a fairly normal looking purse, but she can carry an ipad, camera, phone etc and still have room to smuggle popcorn into the movie theater.
Then again, you know you could survive without it....
Back in the day, it was socially acceptable to talk to people on the bus/etc... I assume that is still true, assuming you can find anyone not lost in their own little digital world.

Probably a smart move as if someone thinks you have a gun then they'll shoot you next time because they'll think you are a threat. Think about it... if you aren't armed then they can take their time to assess the risk.. if you are armed then they have to shoot first and then assess later, or they got shot. Or if they were innocent folk you'd have just terrorised them into believing somebody is walking around in the dark with a concealed weapon...
has a tablet pocket. And lots of other pockets too.
Perhaps a poachers pocket would do the trick?
It should have a leg tie-down for quick-draw. Plus a wide belt slung across the upper body from shoulder to opposite hip with little loops for holding extra batteries, pointing devices, stylii, flash drives, otg adapters, & maybe even a Ticonderoga No. 2.

I usually store my nexus 7 into the thigh pockets of my cargo pants. It's fairly secure, especially in pockets large enough to button up. Fairly inexpensive and unobtrusive. The weight of the nexus 7 is held very close to the body so I really don't feel the extra mass, unlike putting it in a oversize jacket pocket.

Great quality, hand-made in Canada pouches and carriers. Just a happy customer.
I've been wearing technology long before it became fashionable. I used to string my pagers together on an ammo belt like the one Chewbacca wears.
Instead of geek toy makers making holsters, it might be a good idea for real holster companies to start making them for geek devices. These companies know how to get a full-sized pistol to disappear in average clothing while being comfortable for the wearer all day, so I think they can handle one of these larger Android phones.
I suggest checking out Scott eVest at http://www.scottevest.com/. They have a large selection of clothing with pockets to designed to hold technology products, including tables.
There is ***no*** way to not look like a geek while trying to do so, though you can push past into total dorkmode. If you want neither, get a messenger bag or whatever. End of line.
I highly recommend you check out Scottevest. I recently purchased the Travel Vest, a light-weight vest riddled with internal pockets. I would never have considered myself a vest-man before then, but it perfectly filled my needs when I was looking for a similar product. It is internally balanced and well structured so that large items like tablets don't poke out and can comfortably and discretely hold a lot of bulk and weight. I walk around with over a pound of kit (tablet, phone, wallet, tools, etc) without looking like I am carrying anything. It looks nice (I trust my friends to make me very aware when my fashion sense flounders) and it matches almost all of my clothes, so I can wear it almost everywhere, everyday. It sure beats keeping all that junk in my pants.
It really sounds like exactly what you are looking for and I have never been more satisfied with a piece of clothing. If you aren't fond of vests, they have other items designed to conveniently carry loads of junk, but I wanted something I wouldn't need to wash everyday and could take off when I was just chilling at home. They are kind of pricey also, but they have regular sales. I waited for the one I wanted to come on sale and got over 50% off. Just saying.
It's very nice not having people feel like they can and should get a hold of you at any time of day or night
It's not always the incoming calls as much as the outgoing calls. Without a cell phone, and with pay phones rapidly being taken out of service, how do you get a hold of roadside assistance?
Recently I went hunting for the right bag for my needs, and found a few deals on a range of bags. On the overkill end I bought a used Briggs & Riley leather briefcase that is large enough to hold every portable computing device I own, or probably ever owned. If it was scruffy, I'd be temped to use it for grocery shopping or Home Depot excursions. Beautiful workmanship. Down the scale a notch I found a Mountain Khakis Field bag. http://www.mountainkhakis.com/products/accessories/bags/field-bag.cfm Along my travels I discovered RedOxx for very reasonably priced aviator duffles, http://www.redoxx.com/Aviator-Duffel-Bags/150/150/deptThose are the excursion bags for hardware shopping. and DuluthTrading: http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/product/fire-hose-field-bag-43129.aspx?kw=bag&processor=content#detailtabs for a durable, though slightly small bag. Duluth, please make one that fits and protects a 10 inch tablet, but not so large that file folders fit in it, because then my girlfriend would appropriate it.
Yes, you can always hire a manservant to lug around your crap. Preferably on a silver platter.
I just recently bought a Maxpedition Fatboy to carry around my stuff. Nice, as it has a readily accessible back pocket that my Google Nexus 7 fits in, a separate pocket for my cell phone, AND a pocket for my water bottle. Lesser accessibility is under a buckled strap, where I put my wallet. For my purposes, this is actually overkill as 90% of the storage is currently unused. But, give me some years and I anticipate filling it.
This reminds me of a fellow in my Texas high school who always trying to look like some kind of a scientific genius by always carrying a slide rule around in a leather sheath dangling on a chain from his belt (1960s). We used to call him, 'The Fastest Slide Rule in the West'.
A real man would buy body armor, and replace the trauma plate with his tablet.
They don't seem to have updated their catalog for newer devices, but what they do offer seems to fit right in with the tablet sized holster you're seeking:

If that does not work, you might want to check their computer deals pages, just in case they put it there:

Hope that helps!

It's not cheap, and it's iPad specific, but I think this one looks kinda cool. http://bagjack.com/site/bagjack_circdicover/bagjack_circdiscover.html
Or there's the Timbuk2 Catapult, which is really just a small bag: http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/catapult-cycling-messenger-bag/
Also, the Rib just got funded on Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/enthousis/the-rib-eliminate-the-bulge-in-your-pants?ref=live
The fashion/technical outerwear brand Acronym used to have a series of jackets with the "suspensor" system for holding your laptop(!): http://www.firmamentberlin.com/acronym/21765/s-j14_etaproof_suspensor_jacket.html
Honestly, I wish holsters like the Tech Sling weren't so ridiculous looking. They seem pretty convenient and would make me feel like a badass. :(
Messenger bag for the win.
Carrying a tablet in a holster style manner is going to be really awkward, and really look stupid. They are just too big.
Oddly, it's easier to carry a firearm than a largish smartphone, even though the phone is smaller and lighter. People have been making gun holsters for hundreds of years, and they are good at it. Phones and tablets aren't designed for ergonomic carry, and most of the holsters and cases for them are afterthoughts, not serious, usable tools.
