Okey, this comes right back into the lap of the parents. "Oh, you evil influence, you warped my baby's mind," "Oh, bad nasty music, you made my little angel into a thief/killer/etc," "Oh, no, no, no, we need the government to HELP us" all boil down to the same pile of shit: parents aren't doing their jobs.
Hate to take the unpopular viewpoint here, but blaming others is NOT right. These people's child, for whatever reason, is a monster. No if's, and's, or but's about it. Now, they want to dump this on the lap of what appears to be everyone BUT themselves. It is their fault? I don't know. I would hope not. Is it just a freak instance of someone's chemical balances out of sync? Possibly. But, that's really not the issue. What I do know is that this "here, government, raise/protect/guide my child" mentality is BAD.
This goes hand in hand with my rant against the vchip, CDA, CDA-II, and stupid "your music made my kid crazy" lawsuits. I'm sorry folks, but if your child can be turned into a killer by playing a good LAN deathmatch, they weren't brought up right. If they try to spend their middle school library time looking at 3-way goat orgies, they weren't brought up right. If you can't trust your child to behave properly when you're not around, they weren't brought up right. I hate to point out the obvious, but if the biggest influence in a child's life is a CD or web site, there's a suspicious lack of parental influence in their life.
Wake up, people. If you bring your kid up right, they won't shoot people. They won't burn down buildings. They won't worship the devil. They won't treat women as objects. I look at all these bills (like the CDA, vchip, internet decency act, and more), and they all scream "Hey! Raise my child for me! I'm toooooo busy!" Newsflash, ladies and gentlemen: it's not the government's place to define values, raise children, or censor anything. If you don't want your child to see/hear/smell/taste/try/do -whatever-, tell them! Talk to them! TEACH THEM.
This suit strikes me as totally amazing. Much like the man who sued Ozzy because his son killed himself after listening to an Ozzy CD. Give me a break. I've got some pretty nasty CD's (Metallica's cover of "So What", anyone?), but I'm sure as hell not going to go rape, plunder, kill and burn everything in sight.
You know, the people who support this kind of crap are the ones who say "I can't supervise my child 24 hours a day!" To them, I say "You don't have to supervise them. Raise them right. Teach values, respect, and courtesty, and the rest will take care of itself." Wake up folks, anyone who says the biggest influence in their kid's life is a shooter game, CD or movie needs to wake up, and ask themself WHY.
...that you build your OWN slashdot? Rob, being the greedy selfish bastard he is, provided you with source code. All you gotta do is untar it, and start posting.
In the mean time, in order to get back at him, might I suggest you:
Stop contributing code. Cancel that membership check. Cancel that donation check. Halt shipment of that new hardware you sent. Stop contributing stories. Stop making helpful suggestions.
Oh, wait, my bad, you DON'T do any of this. Ok, so that gives you... WHAT right to tell him how to run the site HE built, and HE funded, and HE works full time on?
If YOU, being God and all, feel you can do a BETTER job, then do it. Surely one with your wisdom and 377373 news posting skills can build a better slashdot than slashdot. And when you do, the masses will flock to it... right?
*If you make no effort to help, then DON'T knock a free service provided by the generosity of an (ex)student's heart!*
Por favor, moderating dude, why the did this get marked down? Come on, man. Nobody gives a shit if you've got those little moderate buttons by posts. You've got 0 right to nuke posts for no reason other than wanting to moderate SOMETHING. Get a new hobby, and put this back up where it belongs. It makes a good point, and while not an original thought, it's not worth demoting.
(It's good to see some intelligent conversation coming back here for once. I might actually start posting again. I love this nested comment stuff. Me thinks the moderator idea was a good one, Rob. This one is really Stuff that Matters.)
Back on topic: personally, I'd like to strangle the bastard who did this. Slowly.
Wanna know what really pisses me off, more than anything else? Sick people who do stupid unforgivable things like this, and how nice women are forced to be paranoid and afraid out of necessity. It's a sad state of affairs when a first date has to be in a public place, in broad daylight, and with a group of friends. Honestly, I think if someone ever attacked a woman in my presence, I'd kill him, or get put in the hospital trying. And if someone were to attack a girlfriend of mine, God himself wouldn't be able to help him.
I personally know two people who have been attacked. Thankfully, the first had the good sense to run and scream bloody murder, and her attacker took off. The second one was attacked by a drunk guy who entered the store where she worked. She shattered his knee (15 years of soccer does wonders for leg strength) in 4 places, and HE'S suing HER. Amazing. I wish she'd have gotten a second blow in before security tossed the guy from the store; she says he was pulled up off the floor just as her foot would have caught him in the side of the head. It's truely sad when a woman can be attacked, and then have the attacker win any type of sympathy at all as a victim. It doesn't mattter if she invites him in. Doesn't matter if she's drunk. Doesn't matter if she's butt naked. I honestly can't believe some of the morons above this post who seem to think so. It's just beyond me.
Personally, I'd like to see rapists and child molesters released to society, and all the police turn their backs for an hour. Jail or prision is too good for the animals that do these kinds of things.
To the person who wrote this: I hope your friend can learn to love. Just stay by her side, and make sure she knows that you'll always be there, and let God take care of the rest.
Ask yourself something: what kind of job did you do raising your child? If you do a good job, teach them right from wrong, respect for women, themselves, and faith in God, what do you have to worry about?
If, on the other hand, you did a piss poor job raising you child, and at age 13 they're going against everything "good", you've got bigger problems on your hands than the internet.
Take a look at how your kids were raised. Do the job well, they won't go looking for porn, nazism, etc. And if they stumble across it, they'll know it's wrong, move on, and not be shocked/amazed/tempted-to-do-something-dumb by it. Honestly, if parents would raise their kids half as well as they wish the governemnt would do it for them, the world would be much better off.
And the more stuff of his I read, the more I'm coming to dislike Open Source. I think he's hit upon the biggest problem, and his writing style burries it to deep: "Open Source" (NPL, ASPL, and all the others non-GPL/BSD/perl) _IS_ just free-bug-fix-leaching by corporations. When the company retains rights the developers themselves don't have, it benefits nobody BUT the company.
I wish RMS would express himself a bit better, and with a bit more... polish... than he's shown in the past. He's right about the vast majority of things he talks about, but just turns people off with his percieved arrogance/fanaticism.
How about a "slashdot updates" grey box? For thems of us who are addicted, we can see what you're up to, and you don't have to post a full story about it.
And what about a "Fund Slashdot" box? With links to varesearch (you get a cut, maybe?), amazon.com, cdnow.com, and linuxmall.com, where people can make a contribution to slashdot? Turn on by default, let people turn it off if not interested.
Damn... had a nice comment in reply to a FIRST POST! and it got moderated.
Anyway, how about killfiles? It'd be great to kline MEEPT, SqlKitten, and JonKatz by name, rather than have to lose the AC's of the world along with 'em. No more baby tossed out with the bath water:-).
"Eric S. Raymond, the programmer behind many open source projects"... um, since when? Nothing personal against ESR (fetchmail is great), but this is just flat out WRONG. Wouldn't RMS, Linux, or Alan be a much better mention here?
And since when has GNU fallen short of its goals?
And when did RMS and the FSF promote open source? I could swear he dislikes that term. Would be nice if the press would learn the difference between free software and open source...
I'm still here, just no long bored:-). Gots a job that keeps me busy, so I can't spend more than a few minutes reading slashdot.
And btw, I'm not the one who started first post junk. I just always seemed to sit down in the morning just as Rob posted stuff, and my comments were usually in the top 5 or so. Somebody(s?) noticed I got like 3 in a row one day, and decided to just hit reload constantly, just to get their name up first the next time. Seemed kinda dumb but harmless then, but now that every AC and his inbred cousing do it too, it really sucks...
Debian, dammit, Debian! With apt-get, it's the best suited of the major distros for industry (imho). Why are the only distros getting formal support commercial? Debian, contrary to what appears popular belief, is up to date, cutting edge, and every bit as stable as (if not moreso) the others. IBM, you out there? Listening? I'd much, much rather be able to put apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade in a cron job on 100 machines than have to run around and rpm -i 3 patches on each 2 times a week...
Just what I want - a chip using an unknown weak algorithm, which the NSA probably mandated have a back door so somehow they can read anything encrypted on it...
I'm writing to express my extreme displeasure at your misleading website, www.divx.com.
Nearly everything on the main "about" page is either misleading, or an outright lie. (http://www.divx.com/about_divx_divxtechnology.htm )
First, divx, while it might have its benefits, is NOT a DVD "enhancement" - at most, it is a modification. It should be labeled as such. More realistically, divx is a DVD bastardization, although I highly doubt you'll be putting that on your site any time soon.
Next, on the same page, you spend a few paragraphs lauding DVD technology. Everything you say there is true, but you neglect one IMPORTANT fact: the features you mention are NOT standard on divx discs, and in most cases, aren't available at all! I'm specifically looking at the following:
"Letterbox, widescreen or standard viewing" - show me a divx disc that allows you to pick which way you want to watch the movie, and I'll eat the damn thing. This is a benefit of DVD, and DVD _ONLY_ - divx doesn't support it. "DVD can display multiple languages!" - same situation. once again, show me a divx movie that allows me to watch with my choice of 5 languages, and I'll eat it too. Another misleading paragraph. "You want to see that cool scene from a different angle? No problem!" - This isn't yet standard on DVD, let alone divx!!! Where do you people get your information?!? DVD's allow you to see outtakes, and occasionally select alternate cameras. This is NOT a "choose your own adventure" book.
One more concern of mine: Old movies. With the divx "rent but don't return" model, once the stock of movies is gone, it's GONE. Unless of course, you plan on pressing discs forever, which I doubt. My concern: today, I can walk into a blockbuster, and find a copy of whatever obscure movie I want, or I can have them order it for me next day. If I was dealing with divx, this obscure movie wouldn't have BEEN returned to them, hence, they wouldn't have a copy to give me. DVD and VHS both allow scarce movies to still be rented/viewed. Divx does not. You convieniently forget to mention this anywhere on your web site. Then again, what was I expecting. You forgot about the BIG catch that you can't play your own Gold disc on another player (IE: friend's house). Or stop the movie halfway, and continue later. Or rewatch that favorite scene. That is, unless you're willing to pay a rental fee each and every time...
Sorry folks, but 3/4 of your "about divx" page is a push for DVD technology - which divx DOES NOT SUPPORT! I realize you're looking to get the Joe Schmoe audience here, and understand that technology-savvy persons would never buy into such a scam, but the fact is, one of these days, Joe is gonna get a bit pissed off and hit you with a misleading advertising suit, which I truely hope goes class action. I'd suggest putting a BIG fat disclaimer at the bottom of that page, saying that divx doesn't support any of these wonderful features of DVD:-).
Here's wishing a quick demise to a shoddy product.
Hehe... divx... that's funny... remind me again why I'd pay MORE for the "priviledge" of owning a player that allows renting a disc that's piss poor compared to DVD, and is more expensive?
Lemme clarify... MS releases a shoddy immitation of your product, and kills you with marketing, FUD, and vapor. "Competing" in the sense that it stands to take away marketshare from you, not competing in the sense of "battle on a level playing field"
Hate to take the unpopular viewpoint here, but blaming others is NOT right. These people's child, for whatever reason, is a monster. No if's, and's, or but's about it. If this is true, sprint would have no email, dns, routing, etc, etc, etc, etc. Who comes up with this stuff?
And more importantly, could I had you a binary sendmail, say "Uh... it's commercial..." and make money off their stupidity
