Yeah better not encode into a patented format. Also, stop using your patented computer hardware parts, patented mobile phone, patented communications protcols, patented car parts, anything manufacturered by a patented method....

It goes on. Why is it so bad to use a patented compression system that works? I can understand not wanting generic software patents but a patent on some seriously clever compression routines that took them hundreds of man hours and a lot of money... come on.

i.e. he's stating an opinion "I think Jesus is an Asshole" rather than the flamebait "Jesus is a Fucking Asshole"

They are both very contentious statements and will result in serious and heated replies but one is valid in that it is constructive - it gives an opinion and a place from which to discuss - whilst the other is simply an invitation to flame back and generally piss people off.

Now I don't actually know Jesus so I personally can't comment on whether he is an Asshole or not. I was just using this as an example.

People taking offence, purely for the sake of taking offence are as bad as flamebaiters IMHO.

This might be partially because of the higher performance with SCSI in general (yeah yeah I know ATA/133 is nice and fast but my 15000 rpm fibrechanel drives are faster ;)

If I toddle down to our server room I find a huge number of RAIDed 18Gb (total 50-60 Tb) SCSI drives and no IDE ones.

I was simply pointing out that the average computer user wants things to work - they can just about handle (semi)automatic downloads and can usually cope with hand-hlding install apps BUT they are not happy with kernel hacking....... Imagine the support problems at windows if Nvidia had something similar for their driver installs.

Until Linux is as easy to install, configure and maintain as Windows (yes yes I know windows registry sucks - and I know you need to reinstall the OS every Friday the thirteenth or when a goat eats your hat but the average users just chucks in a cd and it's done) - or ideally Mac OS, Linux will not be a true desktop OS.
