The whole Document vs Application -centric arguement is, IMHO, down to the fact that applications take time to load and run. The MS approach has you waiting time and again for an application to launch so you can do something. Even if this happens ncie and quickly, it isn't as quick as having the application waiting in the background for you to need it.
This was a problem in OS 9 with it's antiquated memory allocation system and crap VM where you did, indeed, run out of memory if you left things running but as is demonstarted above, and has been mentioned in numerous posts here, under OS X that's not a problem.
I also leave stacks of apps running all the time with no windows open - it has no affect on game play or usability of any specific application - it just makes things faster.
When applications launch instantly, and if memory suddenly becomes ultra expensive, or VM is declared illegal by the UN - then I will possibly substcibe to the MS approach. Until then the Apple way is, for my purposes, MUCH faster.
don't knock it until you've tried it, it's much nicer than you think;)
Then again, here in Holland we eat huge (in diameter, not in thickness) pancakes filled with complete meals. Yum.
And the Dutch delicacy of Poffertjes is worth trying - small pancakes smothered in butter and icing sugar. Not recommended for those with a cholesterol problem;)
Sang-Band, a group of mystics who always stopped singing just before you entered the room;
Zang-Band, a Dutch parody of the above;
R. O. Guelike (gooey-lickie), a strange, twisted individual who steals time and productivity from apparently intelligent people.
Angband is, as we know the only way to utter (DON'T say this aloud) Danbg'na, patron saint of all things blue and prickly.
But, as explained abouve in a previous posts it's the Literalists that you have to be careful of, they are always on the prowl and will drag you away at a moment's notice for a quick flogging.
No, I don't know why they like to be flogged by strangers either.
Do the literalists bite the heads off so the grues can get to work?
man these dungeon games are more complex than I thought, symbiotic relationships between monsters - whatever next?

I think there could be a trend but I can't see it right now.
However my half-British, half-German, Communist Palestinian (who happens to own a Chinese weapons factory) leader says we will board our spaceships and attack at dawn.
I have to say though I use this system only for car parking, where it is extremely useful - in shops I tend to use the debit feature.
I've recently seen a couple of food vending machines with a chip facility and I can see myself using it there though but I think I'll keep debiting for normal shopping.
I try to keep around 40 euros on my card though for emergencies.
Kind of - I also find I end up reading, or at least checking, all teh stuff my mail app sends to the spam folder - and I guess I get one false positivie every 200 or so spams. However I find it much quicker browsing the spam in the spam folder, knowing it's probably spam than trying to weed out the spam in my inbox.
So, the filtering perfomed by my mail app does save me some time but not as much as it could if the filtering were perfect.
I was.... like.. trying to catch fish with my rod and it was like *snap* *snap* *snap*........ and the fish got away....... and it was a really big fish.
not really..... Apple are fundamentally a hardware company, they only have software on the iPod so people will buy an iPod. They probably don't really mind what software people run s long as it's an iPod that Apple sold 'em;)
They can't even be pushing Mac-only compatibility as they sell a Windows version etc etc.
So will Apple be miffed if you buy an iPod and install a random os on it? I doubt it, just like they don't send the boys round when you buy a Mac an install Yellow Dog or something.
Better graphits cards how? cunning filtering? double whammy pipelines with 8x anti aliassing? fast 2D? accurate 3D?
Certain workstations require graphics cards which would make your Nvidia blahblah cry for mercy *in specific operations* This makes it a BETTER graphics card - FOR IT'S INTENDED USE. Yes, it'll be a crap gaming card. Likewise, it's possible a workstation will have a processor that's useless when it comes to running windows - and that threfore people would say their gaming machine had a *better* processor. But for the specific applications of that workstation it would be fine.
So there are lots of workstations with better graphics cards and worse processors and vice versa.
That's all well and good but the war on drugs is supposed to stop people preying on the weak and the feeble. e.g. selling drugs to kids, giving crack to the homeless.
Also, some drugs make the users dangerous to other people (e.g. alcohol!).
I have no problem with a consenting adult taking drugs for recreation, they can even kill themselves for all I car, that's their freedom but I don't want them giving drugs to my kids to turn them into addicts and I don't want them inciting people to cause dangerous crimes to get more drugs.
Do what you do to your own body, fine, but what happens when YOU are carjacked and murdered for the money in your wallet and the parts to your car, just so someone can get their fix?
Plasma will never win because it isn't an acronym.;) See, plasma sounds scary (big ball of burning sun etc etc) even though it's not whereas an LCD or DLP or OLED or even one of these CRT things (smirk) must be better becase it sounds "sciency" (tm)
e-paper is good because it has an e- first. Plasma fails to excite.
Plus, now that Samsung have their huge LCD facility running they are making 40" screens which are thinner and lihgter than the equivalent plasmas whilst having a better colour fidelity, longer life (probably) and no burn-in. DLP needs space like back projection to project the image so isn't really equivalent.
But then I have a server in a cupboard together with my TiVo, sat-box, vcr, dvd, amp etc etc, all linked by a lively network of slightly confused cables (not doubt all alike). In the lounge I have a TV, 5 speakers and a sub and a small army or remotes (apparently one of them is an all-in-one learning remote but they won't tell me which) and a remote externder into the cupboard.
Oh yeah, the server has an lcd in the kitchen. And wi-fi etc etc
The point being that this whoie I can do this, I can do that, Your whatever setup sucks is generally a pile of poo as all it takes is a little bit of thought (and a 20m scart cable) and everything will talk to everything.
So I can watch a dvd in the lounge from the dvd player, I can watch a dvd (or other video format) in the lounge or the kicten from the server. I can listen to mp3s all over the place, I can move files on and off my tivo if I really want to. I can admin the tivo from anywhere I find a net connection. I can watch tivo wherever etc.
Yeah but he doesn't eat much. And he's REALLY choosey about where we go. And he never pays his half of the bill. And he smokes. And he's vegetarian, no, he says he's vegan. My mistake.
He likes the odd wafer thin mint (he says it's a waffer theen meent actually) though.
I have to go, the nice men in their white coats (with odd rusty, reddish stains, hmm) are here with my new jacket.
Maybe they will let me out tomorrow, apparently I will be wanting some kind of pasta dish. I didn't know I liked pasta but I have just informed myself I do.
We have a system in the UK called Tracker that works extremely well and was recently tested by the police and others - they tried every trick in the book from covering a car in tin foil (for real) to hiding it in the deepest pits of a concrete underground car park and the car was still tracked without any problems whatsoever.
Assuming you are using OS X and their latest dvd player, then just delete your preferences file and the count of 5 is reset:) I discovered this when I was messing around with accounts and had used all 5 changes on my own account so I was stuck in region 1 there. I switched to anotehr account only to find that account was at region 2 (default for europe) and had 4 changes left..... Initially I though I'd need a region 1 account, region 2 account and so on but then discovered the vastly more simple deletion technique;)
For OS 9 you need to obtain a patch for Apple's dvd player (2.7)- they are fairly easy to locate on the 'net:)
